Whom do you name your character for?

I name based on my sense of humour tbh no real thought but the more random less chance of it being taken I guess.

Healer is an argonian and called Swims like Phelps
Stam Sorc redguard is Blacc Jesuz
Stamblade redguard is *** Nightblade in a nod to South Park.
Magika Sorc is Dobby the High Elf
Magika DK is Dante the Dunmer
Magika Templar High Elf - Jesus Beam FTW although not happy with that.

I did not name my characters, "they named themselves" - when I created them, an idea of a name came to my mind, almost as if they would tell me their name

    Hello comrades,

I tried to create a new toon and decided to pray homage for Rosa Luxemburg. But the name was already taken! So I ended up putting another g at the end of it. And that made me wonder how many people actually name their toons after historical/authors/intelectual figures. Myself, I also have a healer named Hobs Bawn after Eric Hobsbawm and a dps named after Errico Malatesta.

    What about you guys?

    Great question!

For Imperials I do look at Wiki lists of common Roman names and structure. And with the Khajiit or Argonians I stick to the in-game structure. For Nords I use 'Viking' type names (and as I have a man crush on Alexander Skarsgård my Nord has his last name).

But sometimes I just want a D&Dish, fantasy name. Many of my characters in other games have been named 'Hellhound' and I do have that name on the NA server (not the EU one though, sadly).

I do take my time in all cases. Names are very important to me. One of the many aspects I love about ESO is that you can use spaces in a name - it makes creating a cool name much, much easier. I wish all games took this approach and believe it will become standard in the future.

The problem with arguing with a jackass is that they never stop braying.

Mostly name them after mythological goddesses -- and sometimes anime characters. I do have the original 'Tests-the-Build' though -- quite proud of that.

Previously, in another game, I named all my characters either for favourite songs of mine or Norse/Celtic heros of myth and legend.

In ESO, I've gone a bit all over the place. Back in beta, I had this idea that every character should have the word "stone" in their name - but only Cornerstone and Livia Soapstone have made it through to this day. There was a Headstone and a Grindstone as well, but they both got canned early on.

So, in addition to Cornerstone (melancholic templar tank) and Livia Soapstone (slippery nightblade), I now have:

Maglaranna (sorceress who's seen it all) - taken from Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga.

Joanne E Smokes (punk dragonknight) - one of my now two toons named for a song these days: Butthole Surfers' "John E. Smoke".

Torolv Kveldulvsson (grizzled, yet merry dragonknight) - the name of a Viking chieftain who was torched to death in his home by the first king of Norway. His surname means "Son of Nightwolf".

Kavirr (portly Khajiit nightblade with inflated self-esteem) - thought it sounded feline.

Dervande (vampire sorceress with anger management issues) - wanted to name her Verdande for one of the Norse Norns, but that was already taken, so I just swapped a couple of letters.

Allergic-to-cats (devious dragonknight) - as she's an Argonian, I don't think an explanation is necessary.

Mr Croup (deranged werewolf dragonknight) & Marquis des Carabas (flamboyant nightblade) - Had to butcher the French a bit in the name of the marquis as the original with "de" was taken. Both are taken from the 1990s TV series "Neverwhere", written by Neil Gaiman. I tried to make them both look as much like their representations on the TV screen as possible. Later found out while camping Irontooth during the Halloween event with a French player that the marquis also figures in the tale of Puss in Boots ...

Sonic Teenage Guenevere (stoic Templar) - named for the song of the same name by Motorpsycho.

Murmandima (orc templar with abandonment issues) - another name from Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga, Murmandamus, gone feminine.
Ok, who aggroed? I did? Never! I wouldn't. I swear.

My source for names is usually the official Collins Scrabble Dictionary. So these are all valid Scrabble words if you ever find yourself with a what looks like an impossible rack and you're playing international Scrabble:

    Marshall Langley
    Exequial
    Oeillade
    Althaea Ashfalls

    Favourite NPC: Wine-For-All
Mostly PC-EU , with a lonely little guy on NA.

There was a point where I wanted to create Lore friendly names; I actually created several very similar to in-game characters, only to have a friendly ZOS representative have me change them. Just keep that in mind when creating a name similar to another charcter or person (real or otherwise) in this game or any other work/real life et al.; it is in the user agreements.

I ended up making a simple name generator to easily create lore friendly names; I haven't updated it in awhile but it suites my needs: eso.tamriel.org
    Baskin Robbins always finds out.
