Whom do you name your character for?

Hello comrades,

I tried to create a new toon and decided to pray homage for Rosa Luxemburg. But the name was already taken! So I ended up putting another g at the end of it. And that made me wonder how many people actually name their toons after historical/authors/intelectual figures. Myself, I also have a healer named Hobs Bawn after Eric Hobsbawm and a dps named after Errico Malatesta.

What about you guys?

I tend to use the index from "The Silmarillion" and considering the amount of "name already in use" I get, so do a lot of other people.

I'm not original at all. Ignoring my mules (which i have named Mule Toon one and two) my main 3 characters are called Hamster Smasher One, Hamster Smasher Two and well, you get it.

Me, and my buddy Chris in middle school used to play a lot of games together, and even create games, stories, etc. Well we decided to come up with a character name that was suppose to be our main persona. His was Hiro Amenamoto, mine was Strider Roshin.

I use http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Names and look for common letter combinations for whichever race the character I'm creating is, and then type something semi-randomly until I find something that sounds good.

I started playing counter-strike when I was 17 and needed a gamer-tag. Me and my mate used to skip school to play and eat fried egg sandwiches. I couldn't think of anything better for a gamertag lol. Part of me regrets naming my main toon in eso with my lifetime gamertag but I was new to mmos, and even rpgs. My character in skyrim was called Liam cos when I was done with the character creation I thought he looked just like Liam Neeson.

I'm horribly boring, all my characters are a variation of Lilly. Been that way for the other Elder Scrolls games I've played and just carried it on because I'm rubbish at thinking of names!

I think this is a great forum topic, and hope that more players contribute.

I've been using variations of the same name since I started playing any kind of RPG, even the one afternoon I played D&D on paper with some friends when I was back in HS. In fact, I think I came up with it for that very first D&D session.

The name will always be a variation of Jacoby Duncan. The first name is something personal that came about from the name Jake and/or Jacob, but Jacoby just sounded a bit more medieval to me, and that fits in with the general types of RPG's I gravitate to. Duncan is my grandmother's maiden name, and the two just seemed to fit together, and I've used it ever since...

Since this is the first time I've really played a MMORPG with numerous toons that can be used interactively through banking & sharing, I've had to modify it to have unique names, but I'm still using the initials JD in each name here, to represent the original.

I like that this game allows the use of spaces and up to 20+ characters, gives you lots of freedom naming your characters.
I gave some of mine 24 character long names with a tongue twister theme.

I usually choose a theme for a character and then use google translate for different words until I find a combination that suits the character. Kinda weird actually but it works

I've considered the name "Richard Darwins" because a friend fumbled Dawkins and Darwins in a conversation, but it's nit very befitting of an argonian :^)

My characters all have fantasy names which I've made up, sometimes drawing inspiration from games I've played in the past. All three happen to have five letter names as well.

So I name them for myself I suppose, it's fun. I need my character names to be somewhat unique and original and of the fantasy style. I like fun or funny names but personally I get tired of them when used for my own characters.

Tryxus is a name I came up with in high school, a very long time ago

I always loved (and still do) watching fantasy and science fiction series and movies, or reading the occasional comic or book. So eventually I decided to try and come up with a name that would fit in such stories. And then it hit me, and I found the name "Tryxus"

I had the name, I developed his personality by mixing characteristics from both my grand fathers (ppl I immensely respect) and turned him into a wizard until he finally became a magician/illusionist.

And I also came up with a few additional versions of him

Siriana is named after my Everquest character, who is also a kitty. I named her Siri in 2003 after a character in the book Hyperion. Husband named his kitty Bard Bettik after a character in the same book. Ithil'Rakka is Tolkien elvish and literally translates to Moon Claw, which was appropriate then, and given the Khajiiti moon worship, still appropriate now

(we are big Tolkien fans!)

Of course, having the online handle Siri has been a little annoying in the last few years with people thinking I chose the name after Apple's AI, but I realised recently that actually, I don't care what people think!

I have 9 characters,
i'm not gonna list them all but i found an online translater for the khajit languange (Ta'agra), which allowed me to call my stam sorc - Kha'jay Var (moon sugar) after name & race changing her a few months ago. TBH i was surprised it was available!
