ESO graphics mods

So it has come to my attention that there are graphics mods available for eso to increase view distance, remove fog and many other tweaks normally not available.

Most of those mods are kind old though and come with a warning saying you might be banned for using them.

So what's the deal, are these mods allowed? I would love to see how far i could push my computer and the game now that I've got some new hardware.

MMO's generally tend to frown on full mods (as opposed to simpler addons), since they have the potential to allow for gameplay exploits.

Is there any mod that can tweak a lag?

There are few that can give you more.
    Holdviola - Khira'de Regalo - Lélekvadász - Used To Be An Adventurer - Zetor - Does-Not-Give-A-Duck - Lord Sugar - Tenar Arha - Da'rinka - Violent Moon - Extreme Runner

I have been using ESO Launcher for about a year now to remove the distant fog in the game. There are options in the .ini file to increase the draw distance of just about everything, with the exception of player characters since that is controlled by the servers. Increasing any of then will look prettier but will kill your frame rate if you go to far.

None of this really helps your gameplay in any way that I can think of. It just looks prettier. If this mod is not allowed, ZoS has certainly had more than ample opportunity to say so, and if they did I would immediately stop using it. Since they haven't chimed in on the multitude of threads that have come and gone the past 2 years, I am just assuming they are not opposed.

I figure if people can use blatantly cheating programs, with the clear intentions of cheating and still only get some small suspension, then a program that pretties up the distant fog a bit is probably not even on their radar. And it probably shouldn't be.

Harvest map, an addon that uses sanctioned functions, recently received the ability to show 3D pins right on landscape for all resources, chests, etc... and it shows through obstructions like terrain, buildings and such. I tend to think that far more of an advantage than anything else I am using. (I use Harvest map, but turn off the 3D function since it's fugly.)

At the end of the day, it's use at your own risk. If you want my opinion, the risk is extremely small. Just don't use anything that can be construed as a cheat.

If someone feels they need graphic mods to play ESO then I'd like to see their system specs and game settings.

Removing the distant fog has no discernable impact on game performance that I have experienced. But it sure looks pretty. If you want before and afters, google Hook64.

Please note, that I understand personal preference is at play here. No need to tell me you think it looks better with the fog, or more atmospheric or whatever. I get it. :)

I also use a custom shader with eso launcher. I wish I still had the email, but I was specifically told 3rd party graphic mods that don't use injection/hooks, with the exception of soriens stuff, are fine to use.

Runnin' an AMD 7850. Got me my own hacked up Reshade shader going. The post processing in this game is bad, to the point that running HLSL code on an LDR image really brings out the detail.

    Thanks for your great reply.

I mainly want to remove the fog since i think it ruins many zones and views. I tried ESO Launcher and most places look great but it has its disadvantages since you'll see some areas you probably weren't meant to see, that looks kinda weird.

I would love to increase the render distance for foilage (grass) too, is this possible somehow?

I'm only intending to run these mods in PvE. In PvP i might still want to remove the fog but everything else will be lowered to keep the game as smooth as possible.

My hardware specs, since someone asked above, are (with no overclocks as of now)
    Intel i7 6700
    32 GB ddr4 RAM
    GeForce GTX 1060, 8 GB

Does anyone have any link recommendations for 64 bit? I just want it to look sharper and more clear, colors are nice to though.

If you installed Hook64, then you should have a settings.ini in your ESO/game/client folder. You can tweak those numbers to increase foliage and stuff if you want. Some only work with the 32-bit client, some work with both 32 and 64. Some are only for other games.

In regards to the fog, yah I would prefer if there was a way to just push the fog back more, rather than entirely move it, since you are correct, there are some ugly low resolution textures in the distant LoD. But since that isn't possible you take what you can get and choose which option (for or no fog) you like best.

The fog works well in some zones, like swampy Shadowfen for example, but makes literally no sense in a hot desert.

There are services that can optimise the path your data takes to the server to avoid bad switches and such.

In addition to Hook64 I also use Reshade for HDR, SMAA and a touch of vibrancy. It's a subtle but atmospheric detail that helps with some of the "washed out" palette so many games seem to use these days.

No? A google search for "desert fog" proves you wrong :)

There's also heat haze in the middle of the hot day, and sand haze when the wind starts whipping up. I'd say fog makes perfect sense in the desert! :)

Removing the fog works well for short distance views in this game, but looks horrendous for long distances. The LOD system in ESO is incredibly basic, with some of the lowest quality textures you've ever seen, and some really weird mesh warping for mountains. I did try playing without fog for a while but while I've always thought the fog was too strong in the default game, it looks much better than no fog at all imo. Absolutely no sense of depth, and far too many visual errors.

Fingers crossed ZOS update the engine one day and allow us to simply push the fog further back. Much further back...

Haha, as soon as I wrote that I knew someone would look it up and prove me wrong. :D

But my point is that it makes little sense for all regions to have the same atmospheric qualities 24 hours a day. I guess it's better than SWTOR though, they don't even have a day/night cycle in that game.

The fog isn't really there for atmosphere though. I mean it serves that purpose for sure, but the primary reason is so the game doesn't have to handle high quality distant LoD textures and maps.

Well, you can always install reshade if you want to change the colors a bit. Works well for me. Don't use those aweful presets, they are crap. Create your own instead, its very easy.

Not sure if SweetFX will do what you want but I have been using basically since launch and it really helps improve the overall graphics.

It can be a little bit confusing at first if you haven't done it before. Choosing the correct dx level and editing the .ini files to get the effect you like can take some trial and error.

You can use Reshade + Mediator program to help give a useful UI which makes it a bit easier to use (Reshade is an updated version of sweetfx that also incorporates other shaders from other authors that you can try out.

My suggestion if you use sweetfx is to keep track of the files you place in your client folder (there are 4-5) so if you have problems you can simply remove them and have no regrets.

It is usually easy. Depends on your set-up. There are different versions available depending on 32bit 64 bit and some other stuff. Also many many tweaks to it for different games and different effects. If you search ESO sweetfx you will find some examples. Most the time it is just a little more than installing an add-on.

Do any of these tools help fix the abysmal fps? I've got a 1080 GTX and it struggles to maintain 60 fps in most cities @ 1440p, while I can run closer to 80 fps on games like metro last light max settings.

    Unfortunately not.

At best the added shaders/fog removal will have no negative effect on fps.

Just going to tag @Phinix1, since he is more knowledgeable than I am and may have something to add to the thread.
