A Couple Suggestions from a Humble RPer

Good Morning!

I would like to put forth a couple of suggestions as someone who plays ESO primarily as a place for text-based RP. I could be wrong but I feel like ESO has one of the strongest role-playing communities I have seen in an MMO. Despite the amount of RPers there are some small quality of life things that ESO doesn't have, a couple of which can be found in pretty much every other MMO on the market.

The first is dice rolling in the chats.
This isn't even just something that RPers alone would use. Being able to type in a code like /roll 1d20 into the chat and having it roll can be used for more than RP scenarios, but also can be used for any scenario where someone wants a random result. I've never played an MMO that didn't have a built in dice roller, and the one addon dice roller available isn't anything to write home about. I feel like a dice roller in the chat would be a simple thing to add that would be of great value, especially to the RP community.

Next is being able to sit on furniture
This one would not be as easy to implement, but with the advent of player housing on the horizon, I really think it's something that should be looked at. We are going to want to craft beds, chairs, benches, tables and such for our homes, but it would be infinitely better if we could actually use these things. /sitchair is great, but it's awkward trying to sit around a table in a tavern or guild base that is already surrounded by useless chairs that can't be used. Making chairs and benches intractable would be awesome. I know there is the Sit on Benches addon, but it's not the best. Your character sits on the very edge of the seat and looks very weird in most situations.

Torches, Lanterns and other Off-Hand items
Torches, Lanterns, Flowers, Books, and other off-hand items would be wonderful. They could have absolutely no stats and just be aesthetic items you can equip in place of your weapons, or they could be off-hand stat-sticks like in games like World of Warcraft. But being able to walk while carrying a torch or lantern would be fantastic! It would also create a bit of an economy boost because rare items could sell for a decent price in the guild stores. I'd even be fine with them being costume pieces in the crown store if they were entirely cosmetic.

Werewolf Shifting
This one may not be viable the way werewolves work mechanically in the game, but as an avid werewolf RPer I would love to be able to be in werewolf as much as I want/need for RP, Now I of course understand that this probably isn't viable for actual game mechanics, but is there any reason why it wouldn't work to allow the werewolf timer to not start until you enter combat? Here is how I suggest it could work: You hit your ultimate and shift, but your bar doesn't go down until you actually enter combat with another player or mob. Then the timer starts. It doesn't stop, even if you leave combat, it will still run down. And once you've entered combat it functions exactly as it does now. This would allow people to enter werewolf in non-combat situations (like for RP, or taking screen shots, etc) but wont break it mechanically. It'll still cost ultimate, so if you use it out of combat to RP, when you press it again to de-shift back to normal you're still out the ultimate.

Alternatively... you could just make werewolf polymorphs in the crown store. I don't really like suggesting more content for the crown store, but as long as it remains aesthetic. You could have multiple skins, the white, the black, the brown, etc.

Longer guild MotD and member Notes
This isn't exclusively RP-related, but I am constantly running out of MotD and Member Note room. I suppose it's hard to quantify how much is too much it terms of length. Will doubling the space of the MotD increase the stress on the servers? I've no idea. But I'd love some increased length there, and in member notes. It might also help save space if things like the codes to change colors could be removed and replaced with a simple text-editor that allows you to change the colors, sizes and alignments of fonts in the MotD for guilds. I would also personally love to see some kind of player profile UI feature. I certainly wouldn't mind getting an addon, but there just isn't an addon I've found that is like TotalRP or MyRolePlay that have been created for WoW here for ESO.

Guild Search
Another one that isn't exclusively RP-related would be a guild search feature. Allow guilds to write small descriptions of their guild and put it up to help recruit. This could actually be done in game with maybe the same kind of boars where you get your crafting dailies, in most major cities there could be a board you interact with that opens up with UI element for guilds and allows you to search the burbs guilds have posted, and send a request to join.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank ZOS for the features they've added recently that have been amazing boosts for the RP community:

1. Dying Costumes, and Shields
2. Player housing (soon! Yay!)
3. Personalities
4. Appearance, Race and Name Changes
5. Being able to change hairstyles, clothes, adornments, etc in-game! <3
6. Tattoos! I hope more come soon!
7. Hats!
8. One Tamriel - I know this wasn't aimed at RPers, but in one sweeping change you opened up the ENTIRE community to RP together and that's AMAZING.

So thanks ZOS. You've made ESO a very RP-friendly MMO and I love it. But please, what about those dice rollers in the chat? Pretty please? Pretty pretty pretty please!?

While I think the MotD is a good length, I would really love for the "About Us" section to have a giant increase to equal the MotD.

I have to add, while I am not an RPer, the chair thing really bothers me, too... Why are they even there if all I can do is stand on them?
Why be normal when you can be better?

Dice rolling command would be great addition to the game . C'mon ZOS, we know you love a RNG. :D

Also, is there any addon that does that already?

There is an addon called Roll Call, but it's very limited. Everyone needs to have the addon (and some people struggle with using them) to be able to see it. It also restricts you to 1d20, d50, d100 and variations of d6. So there is no d4, d8, d10, d12, etc.

They recently changed it so it auto-sends the result, but for the longest time it just pasted it into your chat box leaving you free to alter it however you want, which made it impossible to use for RP unless you REALLY trusted the people you were playing with. That little change makes it viable, but still a nuisance. My guild still elects to use rolz.org room for dice rolling, because it allows for modifiers (#d20+2 for example).

Werewolf is an ultimate form, I don't think we will see a polymorph anytime soon. Werewolf functions differently then a regular skin, as no ability animations are linked. As ability mechanics of werewolf are tied to its appearance, I probably would want to fight against a non werewolf werewolf.

Here are your options for Werewolf timer, get a group of werewolves together, as four will sustain form indefinitely.

Sustain yourself! Hunt, kill, do what werewolves do! In order to sustain your gift there is a price and the price is blood.

Personally I think salvation set should grant you permanent form.

I like the idea of the salvation set granting permanent form. Another thing that could work would be making WW a toggle like overload, decreasing the WW timer everytime you use an ability

Some other rp ideas that would be an awesome addition to the game is some trinkets that are viewable by other players. They serve no purpose in the game except for cosmetic interaction. Summoning a table for your friends to gather on. Tents, maybe a BBQ spit, some camping essentials for the wandering adventurers of this game. Other ideas for rp would be some abilities to interact with your pets. Feed them, groom them, tether them, maybe even a set of emotes for them to make your pet have its own personality that you could choose to cycle on a loop.

I'm not a RPer but have known some in other games. I can see the dice roll and such, however, the WW toggle would change a game mechanic related to combat.

As such it should not be accommodated. I support changes so RP players can enjoy their activity more as long as it does affect combat.

Dice rolls have been a part of every online game and most chat rooms since long before the Internet became the computer network of choice.

I had the first online game client, in '96, that allowed active browser links to persistent game group web sites but you can't do that any longer. Too many malicious sites. Even Eve Online dumped their in-game browser.

But you could allow guilds to post descriptions and heraldry on protected domains the way Zenimax does now with their store and help page links.

Hell, Kesmai was doing that in MultiPlayer Battletech on GEnie before the WWW...before browsers.

Sorry...drifting a bit but it annoys me that this medium has no institutional memory whatsoever and no minimum requirements based on that history.

Mixing emotes would be awesome as well. I would love if my bard would play lute and sit in one moment :) It's not very important, but it'd make rp even more immersive.

I think it can be done without actually effecting combat in any way. The suggestion I made of the timer not starting until you actually enter combat wouldn't effect combat at all. Someone else suggested making like the Overload ultimate, where the timer goes down when abilities are used. That would effect combat but I don't believe it would effect it negatively.

I love the werewolf, I have one character that is a dedicated "werewolf build", so I would love to have something... but I don't necessarily agree with changing the werewolf ultimate. I would like to have a werewolf "skin" as an alternative to changing the ultimate or making a polymorph. The skin would not be full werewolf form, but it would give you "furry" features, maybe some slight body enhancements/distortions, altered eye color, ears, teeth, etc. They could implement this skin in a number of different ways... purchasable in crown store, awarded when you become a werewolf, or it simply becomes active when you slot the werewolf ultimate on either bar.

I do really like the idea of buffing the Salvation set bonus with unlimited werewolf timer... or at least a significant buff to the "Call of the Pack" passive.

Some very good ideas here! It would be great to be able to interact with furniture, and I agree that its something that should be looked at considering the housing update is coming.

Longer message of the day would be nice, but especially the about us section for guilds. I would LOVE a guild search.

And I will mention this one again: Guild Calendars!!! Please allow us to have a calendar where we can schedule a time and date for events, and will instantly convert to individual members' time zones!!

As for werewolf shifting, it would be nice to have a perma form in some way, although this has been asked for before many times, especially in the form of a polymorph. Right now though, you CAN have permanent werewolf, if you have more than one in your group. I believe 4 wolves is optimum, you will never lose your form. So if you are doing a werewolf RP and have that many, it should be no problem at all :)

And I agree, One Tamriel has been an amazing addition not only for RPers but for all guilds!

Oh, we definitely could use some random number generator command. Could be d20, could be d100... a "/roll" command that just gives a random number chat return... "X rolled 69", could be useful for many a roleplayer now and then...

Yes! Been wanting this since launch... sit-able chairs, sleep-able beds, work-on-able tables, locked-in-able pillories, the works! We definitely need those in our homes, but I would like to see them in the world as well, always vexes me that the chairs in the inns are not useable for player characters...

Torches, Lanterns and other Off-Hand items
Personally I would love a torch item... and more considerate dungeon ligthing that makes you need them too. Darker dungeons, and then... light options. Used with the disguise mechanic - meaning if you get attacked, you drop your torch, and of course you cannot sneak while carrying one... torches could be like disguises that they vanish if lost that way, and you have to light a new one... but there may also be lanterns or illuminated stones that merely unequip and can be "picked up" (re-equipped) after the fight...

Other offhand items... hmmm... most of them could be covered by gestures I suppose. Like we have some of that already. Or personalities, like the drunks mug... a "bookworm" personality, always with their nose in a tome? a "flower girl" personality with a bouquet? a "priest" personality carring a holy symbol, or incese burner? a "scolding priestess" personality, walking with a bell and yelling "shame" every so often... no, wait, that was GoT and not ESO... ;)

Of course, I also would love to see more options for some active objects, aka weapons. Like I keep rambling about, I'd love to see an alternate weapon chopice for destruction and restoration magic... casting them from some sort of "Spell Focus" instead of a staff, said foci to be holy symbols, gilded spellbooks, ornate scepters, meditation crystals, gemmed skulls, shaman rattles, etc.

    Werewolf Shifting
Personally when it comes to werewolf, I would much rather see moon phases influence. As in, no shifting when its dark moons, twice shifting duration under the full moons, and a mandatory "shift-until-you-kill-a-worthy-prey" during the full moon nights, with a game-month lingering debuff if you miss your monthly hunt... (and a timer during that where staying in full moon WW form for too long may have you tracked down by a silver dawn hunt squad...) you know, werewolf stuff.
    Twilanthe wrote: »
Longer guild MotD and member Notes
Eh... not the place where I would need more space.
    But...
I want a tab in character interaction for a little background info! So roleplayers can write a short backstory for their character, and other players can inspect that, and then use it to determine if that neat looking character is a potential role-play-mate, or just a PvPlayer with fashion sense...
    Twilanthe wrote: »

...I'd be more excited about the last one if it was not that overpriced... but yeah, at least we now have something. Still feels rather suboptimal though... having to pay full price if all you want to change is one slider... but eh. I can live with this.

Being able to use furniture is essential; it's been in all of Bethesda's games post Morrowind, after all. Does a damn sight of good to have an environment you can genuinely interact with, even if it's something as little as this.

There are a couple other things I'd like to see added:

    1. Being able to carry another player. 'Twas a rather nice feature in Perfect World, where you could carry another player or be carried, as well as interact with carry-specific emotes; kissing, nuzzlin', that sorta thing. Good bit o' romance.

    2. Emote blending. As it stands, when you play an emote, if you move you immediately snap out of it, with no interim animation. Curiously, if you play a sitting emote, and then another emote, your character will get off the ground and then play the next one; take that system, and expand it for all the emotes, as well as when you move during an emote.

Someday somewhere someone will create an MMO that is entirely geared towards RPers. Because if they did then all the RPers currently spread across all the MMOs would flock to it.

If it was my project I would...

    1. Have a lot of races to chose from
    2. A very complex and detailed character customization with hair, makeup, tattoos, scars, skin tones, eye color, the tiniest details. Including age! So you can play anything old enough to walk.
    3. Thousands of clothing pieces from dresses to armor, with each piece its own separate slot.
    4. A very robust emote system that has it's own UI feature so you can click the emote rather than typing it
    5. Controls for facial expressions so you can actual laugh, snicker, grown, snarl, sneer, look scared or pensive or any number of emotions.
    6. An extensive player housing system with a housing market. You can buy a house and it's your house, it isn't instanced or separate. You wont ever see someone else run up to your house. Only you. And you can put your house up for sale and buy a new one. And houses could also be caves, tents, ships, shacks, cabins, hollowed out trees, tree houses, almost anything.
    7. A system where you can set up your own shop as a crafter of clothing, weapons, house accessories, furnishings, decorations, other items, anything and everything.
    8. An expansive world with enemy creatures, that you can explore and discover on your own without being led around by quests. Just run out into the world and explore, find a cave, go inside it, and discover a band of cultists trying to kidnap children and rescue them. No one told you to go there, and you could have just turned around and left. And your choice will matter, so NPCs in town might be like "there goes Jira, she saved those kids..."
    9. No fast traveling. So if you want to travel halfway across the "world" you get on your horse and go or walk.
    10. A system almost like the Sims that tracks your need for food, to use the restroom, to sleep.
    11. A dice system with a UI interface separate from the chat room, so people in your area can see dice you roll.
    12. No classes, but an ability based system that you can pick and chose what your character is good at, what spells/abilities they have, giving you total freedom to build your class, without levels.
    13. Businesses, so you can earn gold by going out in the world and exploring and finding treasures, or opening up a shop, or running a tavern/inn
    14. An aging system that is controlled by the player. You can make a young character than either they can age at the rate of the game, or maybe the player can chose to age them or pause their aging.
    15. I could go on....
