Linking existing PC account to a Steam PC account

I bought the PC version of the game when it was released. I haven't been active in the game for a few months due to getting a PS4 a few months back and enjoying gaming while relaxed in my recliner.

Steam now has something called Steam Link which in theory would allow me to play the PC Steam version of ESO and have it displayed on my big screen TV. While ESO is now free to play for PC, Steam still charges $30 for the Tamriel One client. What I want to know is if I buy the Steam version of ESO, will I be able to link it to my original PC account and have full access to all my characters as well as the DLC I purchased with crowns as well as the 10000+ crowns I currently have stocked up?

Yes you can -- I've done this.

I have two accounts, one from before I purchased on Steam and one I created using the Steam copy I later purchased.

I linked the retail activated account with my Steam client, so now when I launch it on Steam it automatically logs into that account.

It's a bit of a pain to now login to my other account (the one not linked but purchased from Steam), but there're ways around the autologin.

Also, ESO is not free to play, it's buy to play (there's a slight difference).

A retail copy of the game must be bought and activated to play but no subscription is required for the base game content.

I haven't seen any easy way of unlinking the accounts right now, which is something you should keep in mind.

Easy way is to add the game into steam as an external link, done this the .exe appear Inside your games collection and you can use it via steam.
I use this in order to have the steam overlay active and use the steam controller.
It works even for the steam link.

The only issue that i have is that steam use the american keyboard settings by default, and if you are from europe you need to change it or your password wont be correct.

Using Steam Link and the Steam Controller with my original PC account is the end goal here so this is good news.

Remember that it will be only an external link so in order to update the client you still need to open the original one not the one Inside steam, also all the steam features such as crown purcase or automatic download will be off.

Thanks for the info. One more question that may come across as a dumb question.

If you use Steam Link and Steam Controller to play the original PC version of the game on your TV, do you have to use the game's Controller Mode UI or does the Steam Controller work with the standard/default UI?

Reason I ask is I use several player made mods and a couple months back I tried playing the game with a PS4 controller connected to my PC. I used InputMapper app to have the PS4 controller emulate an Xbox controller. I switched to Controller Mode and everything worked fine with the PS4 except I lost access to a lot of the mods, many of which IMO are essential to quality of gameplay.

Can I link it with the free download it is going?
Without having to buy it again?
