Didn't you know that the Ehlnofey had their hearts in their hips and thus both men and mer need armor on their hindquarters?

Is this actually true? It's not on the wiki - but if it's true this is a very cool analysis of the matter.
By the way OP they're called tassets and I don't know how Google didn't show you any because I literally typed in "Knight's armour" and 99% of pictures have them. It's just that IRL they are typically part of the chest piece - in ESO they are their own piece, but still the same concept. If you ever got slashed in your upper leg you face a very high chance of bleeing out - even without the heart thing Runagate said. Your femoral artery is in your leg. Getting struck there on a battlefield is basically a garaunteed death. You would need a field medic or fast travel times irl to escape such an injury alive.
This almost reminds me of everybody who got mad about Kylo Ren's hilt and failed to recognize how such a hilt could have saved both Luke and Vader from losing hands...
It's not just aesthetic, there is actual functionality. ESO's tassets def. have flair to them, but they aren't that bad.
Shame as lower level armors don't have these things. I forget what level they show up at.
I bet if ZOS ever decides to do the right thing and allow all mats to make all levels of gear (just adjust how many mats for each level), and keep the artwork (so this is an easy database change), most people will be using armors styles that used to be lower level
