Due to loss of paying customers the studio turns more effort towards these boxes to make more revenue. Content is still released but gets more and more lacking because more time is concentrated towards boxes. More people quit.
People realise that without boxes, that neat mount would have been in crown store. People get mad, more people quit.
Studio has now lost lots of customers. They need money. More and more P2W items appear in these boxes to entice people to buy them. More people quit.
These boxes have a horrid stigma around them because anyone that has played any game that has introduced these things has seen this pattern in every one of them. Any time a game has introduced these things it goes on a decline. THIS IS FACT AND CAN BE PROVEN BY READING EVERY THREAD ABOUT THIS TOPIC WHERE MULTIPLE GAMES ARE BROUGHT UP. The only people who are for them are the (un)fortunate souls who haven't had them wreck a game they are invested in and love or people who play new mmos every other year and aren't around for the long haul in the first place.
Thank you for taking the time to post this so I don't have to explain the process to the people who have no experience with these schemes in MMOs again, I was getting tired of it.
Unfortunately, I imagine that the people who are defending the crates are just going to keep ignoring this. You can identify the People with no experience whatsoever by the "don't buy them, they are just cosmetics, it does not affect you" argument.
For the record, having no experience is NOTHING to be ashamed of, nobody is born knowing everything, and I don't mean to offend anyone when I say they are inexperienced with RNG boxes in MMOs. Although it would be nice if they read the actual arguments against the crates before posting their own arguments, so we wouldn't have so many posts with irrelevant arguments that do not tackle the issue.
yeah, all well and good but.... where are they?
"They" what? The people who are posting arguments that have nothing to do with the issue? The MMOs killed by the development shift caused by the crates? The various explanations about the development shift (which is the actual problem with the crates)? There is one explanation on the development shift on the post I quoted.
they what?
are you being deliberately obtuse?
the crates.... obviously
No, just that there were multiple things in my post that could be called a "they". You could be questioning where the people with the arguments that do not tackle the issues were (these people being a "they"), where the arguments detailing the actual issue were (also a "they") or where the games we keep referencing to were (the games also being a "they").
The crates were put up for testing on the PTS last test cycle (and removed about a week later). We don't have an actual ETA on them other than "later this year", if that's what you wish to know.
How is anything in a game like this "useless" ? If it's an item that gives you bonus damage or bonus regen than how is it worthless?
If the boxes are simply for cosmetic items or mounts what difference does it make? It wont effect your game play.

this is just the kind of patronising drivel i have come to expect from the anti crate brigade.
i'll stop now.

Because the focus of the devs goes from making more, better content to creating bigger, greater items for the gambling boxes.
Also, the items go from innocuous, to cool but whatever, and finally get to must have if you want to be able to progress at all.

What if ZOS tests lootbox concept internally by having Wrobel pull "balance decisions" out of them instead of items?Lava_Croft wrote: »Fear mongering much? Not every MMO has gone down this route and so far ESO has neither. There's more than enough time to cry foul, these crates are coming anyway.Lava_Croft wrote: »Fear mongering much? It is what happened on every other game they were introduced (curiously, in many games, they were introduced by the same lady who was hired to do this in ESO too). Do you have a reason to believe ESO will be the only MMO that won't follow this path?

I would not try to pretend like I know every MMO, unlike you. I stick to ESO and at this moment ESO is being quite nice when it comes down to what you can buy for real money from the Crown Store.Lava_Croft wrote: »Not every MMO has gone down this route and so far ESO has neither. Do you know any MMO that introduced this kind of RNG Crates and didn't go straight to the gutter shortly after?

If you really want to use "every other MMO" as an argument, a good start would be to not apply it abritrarily just because it suits your particular crusade against these silly crates.

Can you provide me with ONE title? One single MMO that can back up your claim that "not all of them" ended like this after introducing this kind of scheme?

I'll save the time and effort. Nobody will be able to name a single MMO that wasn't ruined with the introduction of loot crates. Even "just cosmetic ones" because it really is as you say. Once they're in, all development effort goes towards them and not actual content.
But you can't tell the crate brigade that. They just don't hear it.

I am not pretending I know every MMO ever, but I know every MMO that this particular person who was hired to introduce the crates worked on and I know exactly what happened to each of them when she "did her thing". I am not asking you for much. I am asking you for ONE title. Can you provide me with ONE title? One single MMO that can back up your claim that "not all of them" ended like this after introducing this kind of scheme?

ZOS are mostly a bunch of idiots that have trouble doing the logical things that most other MMO's do. I don't see why they will all of a sudden make sense and try to center the game around these crates.
