I disagree, I just did compare them in a meaningful way - in regards to their entertainment value and intention behind developing the game. I think this will give those an answer, what to prefer to play, who are undecided yet. As a multiplayer game ESO is not great at all - the chat box for example is 1990s style - one cannot even hold 2 and more conversations at the same time without to be a channel jockey - this is so 20 years backwards in time. Whoever designed this, is not chatting with others a lot. Or take emotes for example - there are not many ways to express oneself, it is underwhelming in this context and not on par with other really great multiplayer games and sandboxes. Or can you sit down with friends in ESO or have events with your group - no, you cannot - as a multiplayer game ESO is just mediocre. You cannot even communicate with your guild in a easy way, which would reach all - it is lacking off-world communication with them.
In features Skyrim wins, but the two game systems are really apples and oranges because ESO has to be balanced between the players and NPCs where as Skyrim only has to be balanced between the player and NPC's. This is why ESO places more restrictions on what a player can and cannot do, or the amounts of rewards and XP that are earned.
What both Skyrim both have in common:
1) Poor graphics quality: both systems used low quality textures out of the box, but Skyrim's textures can be upgraded.
2) Poor NPC artificial intelligence.
3) Clunky Combat system
4) Crafting and bartering interfaces are really cumbersome unless an addon or mod is used; for example, to craft something a 100 times, I have to press the craft button a hundred times! To sell or buy a hundred items of the same type, I have to press the sell button a hundred times. Why can't I just select the amount of items using a slider.
What Skyrim did much better than ESO:
1) The quest mechanics in Skyrim were not as linear as in ESO. Many of the side quest could be started in the middle; for example, if the flow of the quest was A, B, C, and D, you could bypass the A and B requirements and start with C.
2) In Skyrim you had to aim your spell and weapon attacks.
3) Implementation of physics - dead NPCs would fall over obstacles and not float in mid air like in ESO.
4) Better or more complex stories.
5) Decision choices (when available) affected quest outcomes.
6) The game difficulty increased as your character did.
7) Better skill lines.
8) Better quest rewards
9) Fewer loading screens.
10) Player housing
11) Companions
12) More guild quests - Dark Brotherhood and thieves guild.
13) The guild quest lines are longer and more complex.
14) The ranged weapons and skills had a farther range.
15) Enemies would detect you are a farther range.
16) The atmosphere in the game was most intense.
17) The dungeons were more complex and had more variety.
18) There is little duplication of major structures; for example, the interiors of the houses were not the same.
19) Better justice system.
20) More dynamic NPCs. Each NPC had a daily routine and would respond to dragon attacks.
21) Spell Crafting
22) Jewelry Crafting
23) Better Skill Tree implementation.
24) Arrows and weapons could be modified with potions.
25) The player had a limited supply of arrows, but the arrows could be recovered.
26) Underwear exploration and quests.
27) The conjuring skill line included weapons.
28) Dual spell wielding.
29) No game lag.
30) Can loot armor and weapons from dead NPC's
What ESO does better than Skyrim:
1) Multiplayer combat (It's an MMO)
2) Crafting is more complex and diverse.
3) More options in combat due to the skill bars.
4) More land area to explore.
5) More quests.
6) Can play with friends
7) PVP zones.
8) Earn achievements.
9) you can make a lot of money using the games economy.
10) Unlike Skyrim, you can't pay for training which is a plus IMO.
11) Skill books implementation is much better than in Skyrim.
12) Loot grouping.
13) Better Inventory interface.

no, what you did was give your opinion - entirely subjective and slanted.
comparing the two different things makes as much sense as comparing the space shuttle with a bicycle. and no, i am not equating either a bicycle or a space shuttle with either skyrim or eso.

But so did you - you said both are great, whilst both have shortcomings in their original version - Skyrim has just the benefit of that it can be modded - vanilla skyrim isn't a great game - starting with that you can craft the best gear possible without to even have to leave Whiterun once you are there - played like this, vanilla Skyrim does not even give you a reason to explore at all. What makes it a great game are mods. And those are not provided by the company, but are made by the community.

Holy Necrothread!
ESO has changed quite a bit over the last 18 months (this thread OP from May of 2015) and actually become more like other TES games even though it has a complex and often impossible task of doing so being an MMO and all.
The thing people seem to forget is that Skyrim wasn't like Oblivion. Oblivion wasn't like Morrowind. Morrowind wasn't like Daggerfall. Though there are of course similarities, they have each had significant changes to combat, gameplay, graphics, systems, crafting, loot, etc. Each of the TES games are quite a bit different from each other but the concepts around lore, locale, guilds, race, harvesting/crafting, exploration, travel, etc are pretty consistent in all of them - but the mechanic/implementation is different with all of them. Implementation isn't what makes a TES game a TES game.
Saying ESO isn't a TES game is just silly. That's like saying Oblivion wasn't a TES game because it didn't use the constellations in the same way Skyrim did. Comparing any TES game to another you will come up with a list of things each did differently.
-Aletheion
Apples and Oranges.
As far as TES games go though Zenimax successfully made the worst TES game ever to be produced. They failed their customer's at launch and over a year later are still failing them + people who gave it a second chance.
4 classes total...
Armor that doesn't follow previous TES games (personally I think the female armor looks puritan but that's imo)
class balance
random CTDs/lag spikes/game freezes
no endgame content worth doing.
I could go on, but the above is more than enough for me to give up on Zenimax. Maybe they will figure it out someday but I'm not holding my breath.
