ESO lacking Companions

One of the biggest suprises I have found with ESO is the lack of companions/followers. It is a huge fanbase for skyrim and it is just odd to not see them in ESO. It provides huge depth, more story lines and with the coming housing. They could be staying/guard/whatever the area. You could have instances combat in the housing where the companions fight to defend the land. Heck even SWtor released! 5 years ago with them..,

I didn't like the SWTOR companion thing at all (except for the craft missions, that thing they got it right), really immersion breaking to see a whole army of your companion walking around with other people too.

It would be great if they implement something rare and difficulty to get (Not RNGensus based I mean).

Single player games like Skyrim needed follower NPCs because you couldn't play with others. They were a surrogate of sorts, though a bad one. The NPCs would always run ahead, aggro all the mobs, and get promptly killed either by them, or by putting themselves in front of my hard swung sword and getting hit. I tended to leave them home for that reason.

If you are nostalgic about that kind of dumb AI, you can simply use the GF and PuG a dungeon. There are plenty of braindead human players that will always run ahead, aggro all the mobs, get promptly killed by them, or simply stay in the red and get burned or stomped to death. Fortunately there's no friendly fire in this game :D

In this game, good ideas used by other MMO's go into a magic box. In this box they get kicked, battered, hacked and mutilated and emerge as a useless concept, a mere shadow of the former good idea.

They did have "Mercenary Hirelings" you could acquire in Cyrodiil at launch, but that was scraped a long time ago.
No need for companions in a MMO IMO, but with housing coming, maybe a house steward would be kinda cool.
    Lydia, are you available?

The self preservation instinct, or rather the lack thereof seems to be caused by a recent mutation though, because it would have been rooted out long ago by the implacable forces of natural selection. Potential red shirt minded ancestral Lydias would have been mown down by enemies or even the master's sword (when not carrying it) before they had the chance to reproduce :)

I get where yhall are coming from, but I still like the idea for ESO companions, but done right. Maybe a customizable model, so they don't all look the same. MMOs need companions as long as players continue to be awful people. Lol. Saying to stop playing is silly because the core questing is a fantastic game and a solo experience if desired. I'd do dungeons solo and have a blast with companion(s). I rarely have a blast with players. TBH.

I wouldn't care what they looked like. They would still run in front of my attacks, get lost following me, run ahead and agro enemies I'm attempting to snipe from a distance, and otherwise really annoy the crap out of me.

Even the most brain dead clueless noob player isn't quite as bad as the ES single game companions. The most I can say is that at least the ones in Skyrim didn't keep shooting me instead of the enemies. I loathed a couple of the escort quests in Morrowind for that reason. At one point I recall yelling at the screen "Kagouti there; me here; me no kagouti; stop throwing fireballs, dammit!". Didn't help much, of course.

If you play on console, my condolences. If you play on pc/NA, I can give you a few good guilds with people who love to run dungeons/trials/delves/dolmens. I don't usually like grouping for stuff, but I've had a lot of fun running stuff with them.

Sounds like the box is working correctly then. No point in companions/followers in an mmo. The ones I've played that have them were poorly implemented, and I hated the fact they were necessary at all.

I can think of only one mmo where companions (mercenaries) were "needed" and that was EQ1 where so much of the content needed groups, you were locked into a class, and the population was dying(especially in the early levels) so now you can "solo". (i believe they eventually just let you jump to lvl 80 or so now but haven't been on in years so not sure)
Eso however is still very solo friendly. Yes there are "awful" people but there are others who just want to enjoy the game for the few things you're required to group for.

Buy a banker or a merchant?

Other players are much better than the stupid companions from Skyrim. One of mine actually got killed in a dungeon somehow, never to be seen again. >_<

Also, there are many quests that give you a companion for a while.

There used to be a guild for that. I saw it forever ago so I don't remember much...

But their members each had a certain archetype and they could be hired. They would always act in character while performing as a companion.

I thought it was a very interesting concept for a guild.

    1) just because other games have less than intelligent AI, doesn't mean ESO AI needs to be dumb :)

    2) Companions are engaging and fun. The dialogue alone in SWort is amazing fun

    3) just another thing to customize and make you feel immersive and unique

    4) not everything is about speed runs and 4 second pew pew pvp

    5) I would like Companions that fight and walk with you in the world, not just instances missions or the banker. Not sure why people misunderstood that :)

I get what you mean but you are also asking to instantly double the population of the world. If every player had their own companion.... I honestly don't think there is anything out there that could handle that in PvE settings, let along PvP. Everything would have to be re-tuned.

Nice thought, but I have no idea how they would implement it.
