All the time I was playing in ESO I was sure that direct dmg means skills that are instant cast and deal instant dmg so DoT's and channelled skills doesnt count as direct dmg. This was the reason why builds like magplar had no use for sets like scathing mage. But what I discovered yesterday with help of friend suprised me. The Selene mask description says it can be procced by direct melee dmg and I was thinking it's reasonable due to short cooldown and insane tooltip to be not procced by skills that are chenelled or DoT's. But here comes the suprise - stamina morph of jabs DOES PROC Selene. What's the biggest suprise skills like veil strike ( also morphed to conceled weapon) and DK whip which are direct and mele DOES NOT PROC Selene.

Can I get any informations is this a bug or am I incorrectly define direct dmg ?

another point is "melee" e.g. browler is melee but nado is not.

Melee = stamina based skill with a max range of 8m or less, a stam based gap closer, light and heavy attacks with stam weapons, bash and some dmg procs

direct damage usually includes the initial hit of dots

So jabs will proc Selene, at least the first hit?

And magicka Melee skills won't proc it?

Does surprise attack proc it tho?

There is indeed some problem with this "direct damage" tooltip. Like Bloodthorn/Varen sets proc on aoe but it doesn't proc on templar Spear Shards aoe. It might be interpret as "melee" damage than but it proc on any range skill too, so I take it as bugged? Also some channeled skills proc sets with "direct damage" on first hit while others not proc it like templar Sweeps; same goes for instant abilities. I guess it just bugged and must be reported.

@DRXHarbinger Nope it doesnt. Same result each test and I have Selene wear on.

I think you define them going from the opposite way - through mitigation.

Melee direct dmg skill is the skill that's only mitigated by the armor (and respective CP). Still then it doesn't explain why jabs trigger the set.

Hmm interresting point with mitigation. But why skills like lava whip or concelled weapon doesnt proc selene when both are mitigated by armor which makes them direct dmg in this theory and due to fact both have 8 or less meters range also are melee but in the same time both skills proccing scathing mage which requires direct critical dmg ?

I always assumed that direct damage was any hit on a target that was not an aoe effect or tick of a dot. Initial hit of any channel would count, but not the subsequent dots ticks. Is this not correct?

AOEs proc direct hit sets. Sap on my saptank procs Grothdarr. But it isn't a dot.

Casting refreshing path procs it to but no subsequent ticks do. It's a dot and aoe.
