Wrecking blow does have a cast time, some abilities can be stopped but still output damage. This is called animation cancelling, you. Can look it up and it will explain it. Basically certain moves are given priority over others, so from least important to most important it is:

Light/heavy attacks<Skill line abilities<Blocking/Bashing/Dodge Rolling

This means you can hit light attack, surprise attack (to name a Nightblade ability) then bash to cancel the Surprise Attack animation. All 3 attacks will hit with the first second.

This is something you have to practice but it cannot be done with skills that require a cast time or channel.

Even ultimates can be animation cancelled, such as Dawnbreaker.

You'll learn it the more you play, you will also get used to cast time abilities such as Wrecking Blow, you'll know when it is more advantageous for you to use it the more you get used to the skill. Most endgame players are used to Wrecking Blow/Dizzying Swing spam and know how to properly counter it which could be why you are losing to them.

It's all about practice man, you'll learn it in time.
