Yeah the last MMO I played had epic bosses that would only spawn once every 3 (real life) days. You had a chance at obtaining a special weapon or ring that would greatly increase your damage. The weapons weren't super great, but the rings and amulets would nearly turn you into a god.
When a factions epic boss had spawned (there was one in each factions territory), the other factions would generally try and take it over the drops were so powerful.0 -

When I look at this screenshot I took of Auridon after beating the main story way long ago, there's a feeling I get, deep down in my gut. It's the same kind of feeling I got when I first played Oblivion (and when I returned to it for the first time in years earlier this year), every single time I do a playthrough of Morrowind, and (only semi-related) the feeling I get whenever I watch basically any footage of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
It's a feeling of... wanderlust? Scope? Energy? It's difficult to describe. It's a feeling of wanting to explore, wanting to meet the characters, wanting to go dungeoneering, wanting to right wrongs. It's a feeling of getting invested in each area's story arc, enjoying how each area is paced to its own writing, enjoying how much snappier and more interesting the dialogue and voice acting is. It's a sense of studying the game design, seeing the limitations and strengths that the game has compared to the last couple mainline TES games (and being completely unsurprised when I found out that Zenimax had done a better job crafting an RPG than Bethesda has in the past decade).
