I think youll really enjoy it. Probably come back with somethings youll want to see in ESO that is in Skyrim.

Any citations on that info?

And to me, if anything, ESO feels more like Oblivion than Skyrim.

Don't get me wrong, I love Skyrim. It's a big and beautiful game. But not my fave ES game.

I feel the exact same way.

And while I concede that Morrowind is the best TES, I really love Oblivion and I think it had the best guild quests of all TES games.

Skyrim is the only one of them that I still play regularly, though (although I fire up Oblivion sometimes). Other than ESO, of course.

I love Oblivion too. The Dark Brotherhood questline in it was second to none. I also think every Elder Scrolls game has its own merits.

To me, the colour pallet of ESO is far more in line with Oblivion. Even the Skyrim areas look far more colourful than they did in Skyrim.

Go look up the Polygon article they recently did about One Tamriel. They had an entirely different idea about what the game was going to be like before Skyrim and Skyrim made them rethink what they wanted. The characters were much more cartoonish, the combat was much more WoW like with absolutely no freedom of movement like now, it was going to be a very dated and bland experience.

I have played both - Witcher 3 has very good story telling and is awesome in it's own right - but if I compare both by replay value, I will most likely never again play the Witcher, but I will continue to play Skyrim. In Skyrim you have a lot more ways to create a character after your liking, in Witcher 3 you are just playing a given character and the ways, in which you can make this character your own, are very limited. Witcher can at times be stressful if you play it on higher difficulty (and playing it on low difficulty would be a joke), whereas Skyrim is overall a more relaxed play through. If you want something, what is "play as you want", then Skyrim is your game, Witcher 3 is not play as you want, it is play a Witcher if you can, not how you want.

Sorry if it sounded like me disbelieving you, I didn't as I distinctly remember visuals looking a lot brighter and more cartoony back at its announcement. I just thought I was remembering wrong!

Great article btw. Really great. Lots of backstory. The game was majorly overhauled almost from the ground up.

I think Skyrim and Witcher 3 are the best solo rpgs in the last decade.

    Primary differences:

Skyrim - You feel like you are thrown into a world that you can explore endlesslessly, and there are surprises at every corner. The primary motivation to playing this game is exploration, and feeling like you are just in this epic, magical world. You are also the savior of the world, and you fight freakin dragons, so you feel pretty epic (just listen to the soundtrack right now to feel the epicness permeate) while playing. It is the most immersive game I have ever played, just ahead of Witcher 3 because its from a 1st person perspective. This game makes you feel like you can just walk in any direction and be excited to find something engaging.

Witcher 3 - It is also a huge open world, and is incredibly immersive, but the primary motivation to playing this game is in the stories. The world in general is very detailed, very dark, and has war, death, and tragedy everywhere. This game is more about characters and dark, emotional stories. You get more attachment to characters in this game, and the stories, at times, can be as good as watching a great TV series....while still being a great, open world video game with other things to do as well.

What did I like more? I guess I can answer that by saying I would be a little more excited for an elder scrolls 6 game than Witcher 4.....but not by much, and it might be because I played Witcher 3 more recently lol.

@Stubie whatever you choose, both games are great but DO NOT BUY SKYRIM FOR CONSOLE ...get PC version, due to the modding community and amount of mods for it.

Skyrim is full of bugs, annoyances and unfixed problems and glitches ... without mods it's a mediocre roleplay game. With mods it's one of the best games in the world lol

    Both are really great games.

What I found while playing Skyrim was the fact that you always would have to go and check out pages about lore to better understand the quest you were doing. So yeah if you want to read some bedtime stories, this game is it. The DLCs are pretty damn hectic too.

Witcher 3 is just awesome nothing else to say about it.

Skyrim is definitely worth a play, though my ranking of TES single player games ranks it last compared to morrowind and oblivion. Morrowind is really dated (though a freaking masterpiece) and really hard for a new player to pick up. Oblivion captures a happy medium between morrowind and skyrim that I really enjoy, but it also has its problems as an older game.

I think playing skyrim will give you a lot of insight into the playerbase hear, and understand where people have been coming from when they say "ESO isn't TES"

Skyrim was fantastic. I have the old version of it so I'm getting the remastered version free on my steam. I'm very much considering playing Skyrim for a bit when it releases.

P.S.: I'm still hopeful the 'Skywind' project completes. It is using the Skyrim engine to redo Morrowind. From what I saw of the project it was absolutely beautiful, and I'm really looking forward to it. (as an aside I really wish that ESO had spears like Morrowind had).

Bit of a shame the "Elder Scrolls Anthology" doesn't include the two spinoff games Redguard and Battlespire, since these don't seem to be available anywhere at the moment.

For those that already have some of The Elder Scrolls (TES) games, Arena and Daggerfall are available as free downloads from the TES website, so you don't need to buy the anthology to get them.

The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages (UESP) has coverage of these and and the various other TES spinoff games (see All Content), if you want to find out more.

Both are great in their own way. Witcher 3 is more about story and dialouge, gritiness, choice and consequense. Skyrim, well there are stories but it's more about exploration and is very laid back. Walk/ride everywhere, you can play it for 100's of hours and still find new stuff, the world is extremely detailed. Wrothgar is the closest ESO comes to Skyrim, you get sent all over the place and have lots of stuff to distract you along the way, doing the main quest, or any quest is completely optional.

If you love Game of Thrones and want to play an open game with more focus on story and characters, i'd say Witcher 3.
If you want a more laid back, easy to get into game with a focus on game play freedom, i'd say Skyrim.

Here is a question. How important is First Person view? You can only play Witcher 3 in third person view. For me I love first person view. So if you are not going to get both games, is not having first person view that important to you or not?

@buxuus, in case you didn't knew...

Redguard and Battlespire are available on GOG since last year.

When you buy any of them, you get Arena and Daggerfall added to your library for free... not the free ones, the real ones with the full CD content.

Morrowind had a 3rd person camera. Though, the single player games have never really had good third person controls. Skyrim's are probably the best, but even then they're dodgy as hell.

You might want to try the FOV command, setting it to something like 90 or 110, and see if that helps with your motion sickness.

I have played Oblivion, Skyrim and ESO.

The first ES game I ever played was Skyrim since it is the most popular and my boyfriend already had it. It captivated me in a way no other game did. I have almost 1000 hours xD

After re-playing for the like 4th or 5th time I took a break but I could not find any game to fill my free time with. I used to play WoW but only raid, so I decided to buy Oblivion. Damn, I cannot decide which game I prefer. Skyrim looks incredible and Oblivion is way older, so the graphics are strange, and the zoom you get into the NPC faces when you talk to them is creepy  but the story line is awesome. Besides, the guilds (thieves guild, dark brotherhood) are more "real" in the sense that you actually have to work to progress in the ranks, unlike Skyrim, where after the second quest you are already a key for the guilds.

I would say if you have only played ESO start with Skyrim, but give Oblivion a try. Graphics are not as cool and controls can be weird but it is such an amazing game.

Next game on my list is Morrowind. I haven't bought it yet but I will definately try it.

Ah, damn, I love the elder scrolls universe <3

Eso is the only ES game I've played out of the series. I'm currently taking a break from ESO but I was thinking up picking up Skyrim remastered for PS4 on the 28th. As someone who never played it do you think it's worth the 60$ price tag? Or at this point are there better RPGs to check out? It's basically between Skyrim and the witcher 3. I'm going to buy one of them. Thanks.

If PS4 is not your only option, please consider buying Skyrim on either PC or Xbox One. The latter options will give you a chance to vastly improve your experience via hundreds of amazing mods that have been created by the community.

Vanilla Skyrim is good, but not better than ESO in it's current, post-One Tamriel state. Modded Skyrim, however, is - unless you fancy transoforming dragons into ponies or choo-choo trains - a masterpiece.
