Depends on what else is added in that and future updates. At a minimum, it is an instance you "own" and can customize with furniture and decorations. It will almost certainly let you show off trophies and invite friends to visit.

In other games, houses could also be used for guild halls as well as individual residences. Activities/options for houses in other games include, but are not limited to: farming (in this game it could be alchemical ingredients pretty easy), training (with a DPS dummy), upgrading mounts (with a stable), crafting (with crafting stations), and building/upgrading/storing/maintaining guild-based equipment or transports for access to certain areas or activities (not relevant yet to ESO).

! @ZOS_GinaBruno Thankyou ZOS, this is everything I dreamed housing could be, and housing is the most important feature I`ve been waiting for in ESO.
Well not quite "everything" I dreamed

- I still have many dreams like mannequins, weapons plaques, trophies and mounts/pets visible in homes, even craft stations, hope those may come true too and available for ingame gold as well... But oh yesh, this sounds so very good allready.
Also if the monetization of this my favorite upcoming feature is so nice and fair, I`m a very happy customer when I make my next crown purchase or sub payment, Cheers! Besides being fair, ´housing features being available for ingame gold and craftable gives a much needed new gold sink and new type of motivation for adventuring .
I bet you will have a rush of new players to ESO because of this too, some of them old TES players even . GG ZOS!
Can hardly wait!
Ok, off to level my carpentry, cushion making and kettle tinkering in game.

My Wish List for Housing

I would like the Crafting Styles to be applied to the Crafted Furniture, alot of design work I know but doable I think.
I would like to display Monster Helm pieces on the Wall (a use for training and Prosperous :P)
I would like Miniture Mundus stones or 1 Stone that you can save your favourite buff to.
I would also like to be able to save a crafting set to your homes crafting stations (Kagrenac would be my pick)

And this is most important to me I would like to be able to set up a House as a Guild Hall, and allow guild members to come and go as they like. Although invites would need to be retractable...

P.S. A way to display stolen Items, I know a certain guild member with a pile of Reapers Milk Jugs that would be awesome to display.

I am gonna be super lazy by not reading all the above comments, so I am unsure whether this has already been suggested... but I have a nice little idea that the houses come with shelves or display units that you add in the collectibles you loot from killed enemies, so basically a system much like the Orsinium museum, but it is a nice way of showing what collectibles you have discovered, it would add a bit of personalisation without being too hard to implement (I would imagine?) ... anyway that is my idea if anyone is interested.

Other than that it would be awesome to see a limited amount of space in houses for storage, maybe increased in size by what size house you have... And I really do mean minimal space, otherwise it is totally voiding people's efforts for gold or real money spent on crowns for bank, inventory and mount space upgrades and not forgetting ESO+ craft bags...so like a wardrobe for clothing and armor, food cupboards for provisioning mats, jewellery space etc, you get the idea.
