PC restart on launcher

nathanainsley1b16_ESO
My computer reboots everytime I attempt to open the launcher and begin the patch download. I suspect the patch manifest might be corrupt, but deleting the programdata folder in the programfilesx86/zenimaxonline/eso didn't help. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

So I had this issue too but I seemed to have fixed the problem. It seems that the launcher tries to reinstall Microsoft VC++ which, I already had. That forced windows to see it as a windows update and restart. What I did was:

    - Remove the game client from Admin mode: Right Click > Properties > Compatibility > Uncheck Run program as administrator (if checked)

    - Run the client

    - When windows asks for permission to make changes to either VC++ directories (mine asked twice) say no to both

    - Launcher should start updating with no issues.

Hopefully this makes sense. like I said it worked for me so hopefully it will work for others as I know how frustrating it it.

    This resolved my issue
I found the actual launcher.exe app at
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\Launcher
    Name: Bethesda.net_Launcher.exe

None of the above resolved it, and still nothing from ZOS....so unsubbed.

This is what happened to me as well (the Microsoft VC++ update, but not the PC restart).

I keep insta-crashing after I did the launcher update and patching (Error 11, "Client Fatal Error"). Restarted PC, did a diagnostic. Says I have no issues. I tried your suggestion (that I really appreciate), but I do not have "Run As Administrator" checked. Checked, unchecked, nothing.

I have one more option I am going to attempt before completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game unless anyone else has another suggestion!

*Edit: I may try a system restore if a launcher repair doesn't do the trick...

I am attempting to fix this issue on my partner's PC and nothing has worked. ZOS how do you mess up each patch?

@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom what is going on with this?

Hopefully, the mods and technical team can help you all find a fix or work around. I'm sorry my solution didn't work for everyone (hopefully it did for some), I just wanted to share it because I know how frustrated I get when it's clear I'm not the only one with an issue but there appears to not be any solutions. The only other advice I can offer is if you can start the computer in safe mode try and repair the client.

Unfortunately this seems to be the price we pay for content on major patch days as I also used to have occasional problems in other MMOS with updates like this. Anyway, I hope they find solutions for everyone and hope to see you all on the flip side enjoying the game.

All I had to do was repair through the launcher, did not need to delete files, but it may be different for others. It's worth a try if you have not done so already! (I did not think to do this initially because usually if I need to repair, my launcher prompts me to do so.)

While I did not have the PC restart issue I think most of y'all are having, I was prompted for the Microsoft VC++ update (twice), so perhaps this may lead y'all to a solution.

Thank you, @MissBizz for helping me today! And thank you @Ltownatrain for posting what helped you resolve your issue as well. I hope everyone gets their problems fixed and can continue to enjoy ESO. (=

I bet that would work for me but in this case the launcher doesn't stay open for longer than 5 seconds before automatically restarting.

It's great though that players are trying to help us all with this issue. Thanks.

Computer is also rebooting everytime I launch the client, even if I try to pause the download my computer restarts. So far none of the solutions posted here have worked. Anyone else have any ideas???

I figured it out all. You have to go into User Account Settings and change your option from Never Notify to the one that changes it when an app wants to make changes. (Usually you just have to move the bar up one option).

This worked for my partner and I hope works for everyone else.

Seemed to have fixed my issue, it seems the client kept trying to re download my visual C++ each launch so windows saw it as an update and would restart the computer. If you get a message to update visual C++ make sure say no during the client launch and you might get lucky and have things work.
  • nathanainsley1b16_ESO
thanks for all the fixes though sadly, none of these worked for me. I'm very dissapointed and wonder if theres any point at all in reinstalling... also surprsising that so few players are experiencing the same issue.

I had the computer restart on one of my computers after I had consented to the changes, but while I was out of the room so I don't know what else transpired in my absence.

My other machine didn't restart but I sat by it watching eagerly this time and after consenting twice to the changes was given an alert that the visual C++ may not have installed correctly, and prompting me either to reinstall it the recommended way or to confirm that it was working normally. I didn't have a clue whether it was working normally or not so I prompted for the reinstall and it then carried on patching the game.

Once fully patched, both computers have run the game ok. This is all on Windows 7 x64 machines with the final destination (eventually!) the EU server.

I Finally managed to get the patch to download by doing what Otar said:

and making sure I had the lastest redistrib package as well as uninstalling the rest of them as some of them I think can stop it from working properly. that was a lot of faffing around just to download a patch! thanks again for the help.

My PC would restart each time I opened the launcher. I would not get a prompt for VC++. I then uninstalled and tried a reinstall but got the same issue during the install process. ESO support failed to assist me after they determined I was using a gaming laptop with a Nvidia GTX 880M.

From the uninstall folder I removed the VC++ (x86) file and then was finally successful at installing the game. Not sure if this helps anyone else with the same issue, but hopefully it might.
