what if crowns were a preparation for a crate idea in future? was this planned from the beginning?

last night i had a thought, why would the ingame store even need it's own currency if it's all cosmetics? then it hit me! was this a preparation for future stuff? to "soften" the blow?
PLEASE REPLY TO ME WITH @dsalter otherwise i'm likely to miss the reply if its not my own thread

I think they used Crowns rather real currency to disassociate the actual cost of items. Also it allows a set in game price regardless of user's local currency. I think that is pretty standard and I doubt it was leading to the crates.

When a game goes F2P with micro transactions, the end goal is usually to implement stuff like this that can generate money if they find whales to waste their money on ones and zeroes (not even getting into the moral argument here even though it's a big deal too).

Here's one thing I thought about this week.

We can assume that they had their MBA's and accountants figure out the pricing for DLCs to make them enough money to be profitable while assuming that 40-50% or so of non-subscribers don't buy them.

What happens if the adoption rate isn't as high as they need it to be to be profitable? They'll offer bundles to entice people, sure. But they're losing money in that scenario. Crown crates will help make some of that up. But it's dangerous nowadays. People are sensitive to that nonsense and predatory marketing.

IDK, and obviously I'm not on their business development team, but RNG boxes have never EVER brought good things to a game. No game has ever suddenly pivoted to amazing because of the additional revenue stream from RNG boxes.

    Def worried.

Then they need to produce better quality DLCs that have very good writing / story and interesting / fun content, such that more people are willing to pay for the DLC.

They had a lot of new players recently, all of them had to buy the basic game, so I don't think finances was the reason behind. I had my worries what was the reason and none of that is friendly for the players or says anything good about the current management...
And in my experience, players need to enjoy the game 1st, then they are willing to buy other upgrades for reasonable price if it add to their good experience, so probably some of that didn't meet their wishes.
My guess is that DLCs were selling good, but the market objects only sometimes, so they were thinking, that they will not make enough of DLCs to make profit, so they focused on the market, where players didn't spend their money, and on subs.
The problem is what I saw in my experience+my limited wallet, that players need a clever system of features for small fees, that are cool to have in the game. If it costs too much or if you don't need it really, you will not buy it (unless you are rich).
So they needed to create a system, that would meet that. And for sure, that doesn't require RNG boxes. Some companies had small cool stories, that could make your game better, didn't cost too much to create, and brought some profit. Or here in ESO players complained about cosmetics being too expensive, because you would spend only some amount of money on an evening dress, so more, but cheaper would be solutions, or sales on the end of the month could make those less rich players buy things they don't need. But again, if they would create a cosmetic system, that would be cool and you could spend some of your money there every month, it would be similar to the system of crates, but players would buy it, because it would be cool.
The system with boxes is questionable, the system with boxes in ESO is the worst I ever saw in any FtP MMO.

My understanding is that games use a fictional currency instead of directly selling items for cash for 3 reasons.

    1) Standardisation across currencies. They can announce the price in the in-game currency instead of listing all the different currencies their players use or listing just 1 (likely US dollars) and leaving everyone else unsure what exactly it costs - especially since exchange rates can vary a lot.

    2) They sell the currency in packs that don't have to match the price of items purchased with it. Which has 2 benefits:
    1. They have to pay a fee for each bank transaction. They might want to sell virtual items for a couple of dollars (or even less) but not if they have to pay a fee to get that money. Selling crowns in packs ensures the minimum spend is enough to justify the cost to them. (Just like real life stores that don't let you use cards below a certain amount.)
    2. It means players are likely to end up with 'left over' crowns which they're tempted to spend. Then they either buy something cheap they didn't really want to get rid of them or buy more crowns to get something else they do want.

    3) I dont't fully understand this (not a lawyer or law expert) but when they sell items in the game they are, from a legal perspective, selling their Intellectual Property. If they instead sell a virtual currency it can be presented (and is in the Terms of Service) as selling access to an additional aspect of the service. Legally crowns and the items purchased with them have no value and never belong to us - we're just paying to have permission to use them. Which enables ZOS to maintain control of their IP and to restrict practices like players selling crowns to each other for real-world money.

3000 crowns sounds less messed up than 25-30 $ for a race change that costs more than my current game purchase

    I don't care.
The game is fun and I like the sub benefits.

I don't really spend crowns on anything apart from the occasional mount and I never spend real money on buying extra crowns.

While the game is fun I will play it. When it's "sort of enjoyable now and then" I'll cut my sub but keep it installed and play it every now and then, mostly after big updates to see if I want to come back.

Eventually the game will not be fun (or more likely I'll find a game which is MORE fun) and i'll delete it off my computer.

I doubt it was in planning from the begining, but it was likely pushed. The person that greenlit this needs a inquiry.
