Maintenance for the week of April 6:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – April 6

Very sad to see the crown crates are gonna exploit people with gambling issues!

So you support this? I tested this out now, and the droprate on stuff is not good at all. And 400 crowns for one crate is absurd.

I'm also very sad to see ZOS stooping to the level of cash shop RNG boxes. That's something you'd see in low quality MMOs and not something like ESO. Even worse, they're putting in unique things into these when they could just sell them out right. Also its gonna be the only way to get older vanity items when they simply could easily provide other ways to get them later on (like they just did with the IC stuff).

It feels like they hired someone from one of those companies that run crappy F2P MMOs. C'mon ZOS, I play ESO in part because you haven't had to resort to such horrible marketing practices as those games.

The crates are every bit as bad as I imagined them to be.

To have previously available items in them is one thing, putting lots of exclusives, that many of us would have bought if offered directly, in there is quite another. It would be ok if you could convert any unwanted mounts, pets and costumes into crown gems, but you can't.

They're doing them badly. Even the richest players will eventually stop buying them when they've collected everything. They should allow the items to be sellable on guild traders.

Personally I'm only interested in mounts and costumes everything else they include is just junk to me so no reason for me to buy even one crate.

The proof is in the pudding. I guarantee they will fly out of the crown store. They will be hugely popular. People like to gamble stand in a 7 11 poor people buying lottery tickets then use their EBT cards to buy a slurpee. It's bad and it sad but it's true.

Reminds me of something you'd see in the bdo pearl shop lol. I remember people spending hundreds of $ breeding pets to unlock a specific xp bonus whilst at the mercy of the RNG gods lol. Heck it was RNG to purchase a specific coloured dye for your character lmao.

Mind you, these crates aren't as bad as that but still... ZoS need to be very careful about going down this path. Few people enjoy this kind of thing and it could have a negative impact.

Thankfully their impact on gameplay is minimal, other than the amount of development resources going toward crown crate content.

I tried these crown crates out just a few minutes ago with a pretty positive expection. But directly when i opened the first crate i was thunderstrucked. All cards POTIONS. serious Zenimax? POTIONS??? I was really hoping with all the cool *** in the crown store that it would be at least have a maximum of maybe two consumables and at least one card that would be a mount or anything. This is absurd and ridiculous, and i think if this is the version of crown crates we get in the game, you'll see a lot of people not buying anything anymore in the store. I sure wouldn't, while i'm the *** who has spend already hundreds of euros in this game.

ZOS aren't responsible for protecting people from themselves. If people are going to make bad decisions that's their problem, why should everyone go without this feature, that some people might enjoy, just because a small minority are incapable of controlling themselves? The mistakes you make are yours alone, nobody elses.

Are you serious? If so, you are missing the point entirely.

People aren't arguing for the removal of the ENTIRE EVERYTHING that is associated with Crown boxes, they just want the items in those boxes to be available directly for reasonable prices.

It isn't about "protecting" people from bad decisions, it's about elimating predatory business practices while promoting a customer facing business model that attracts new players not drives them away.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking. Maybe add some in game gambling that involves gold or something. But playing with people's real money? That's a low move and I guarantee this topic crossed their minds and are still giving it a go.

If all the best items could be purchased separately why would anyone open crates? The whole point is that there's a possibility you'll get some super rare drop that not everyone can just buy. ZOS simply wouldn't have spent the resources implementing this feature if they weren't going to make a good return; which they won't if there's no good reason to buy crates.

ZOS can operate their business anyway they like, the way you make your voice heard is by not using their products. If ZOS discover that this feature really drives people away as you suggest then I'm sure they will quickly change their mind.

Yea. He is seriously right and you are the one missing the point. Nobody is forcing anyone to make the purchase. Nothing in these are mandatory for enjoying the content the game offers.

Characterizing this as a predatory business practice is not just a leap in logic it is laughable. There is no deceit or anything remotely unethical about these items. Information about the items is provided in detail upfront and is a purely optional purchase.

This is simply RNG chance for items at a price.

Look I get the whole rng crown crate thing but it's just bad business practice. It is taking advantage over people who have a gambling addiction. Not saying it's Zos's responsibility to prevent or cure the addiction but it's still a low blow. People already said they would have been WILLING to buy the types of items they offer outright on the crown store. Which would have made them plenty of money by itself. I for one would have purchased a storm mount or two. But now, not a single penny is going toward that. They're turning away purchasing customers to appeal to gamblers. Making 0 money of people who don't gamble, and a *** ton off people who do. It's not illegal nor will it make me leave the game, it's just low.

I find this argument about gambling addiction to also be a reach and almost as bad as the predatory business practice accusation.

Are people with gambling addictions really going to throw money at this given all the real world gambling options they have available and do so just for a cosmetic virtual item?

      Seriously people get a grip.

Yeah I thought the same. Someone with a gambling addiction isn't gonna gamble unless they are gonna get real money out of it. Kinda the point of gambling. Sure these crates are technically a "gamble" but not the type of gamble a person with a gambling addiction would go for. The people who go for these crates are the people like myself who like to collect the cool cosmetics.

Of course they can, and of course the only power I have as a consumer is not purchase the crates, which I won't be doing.

But look around you; how many people do you see that are excited about these things? A couple? Maybe? How many more are vehemently oppossed? I'd say the grand majority.

Maybe it's just my opinion, but alienating a large portion of your customers is a pretty bad business practice from a PR perspective. This game is already a hair's - breadth away from being considered a cheap P2W mess by the general public. These crates are not helping their image.
