Honourable Enemies in Imperial City

I just had an interesting experience in Imperial City.

I decided to head into IC to see if it was dead now that the increased drop rate event was over. I did a quick circuit around the sewers area just outside my alliance base, and the only other player I saw was a friendly player who was obviously grinding. I might have stayed for a bit, but I didn't like the route he was taking, and besides, I didn't want to just hang out in the sewers. So off I went to the Arboretum district to do the daily quest there.

The last time I was in that district was during the IC event, and it was absolutely crawling with enemy players. You couldn't swing a dead clannfear without hitting at least 2 or 3 of them. From the safe zone by the ladder I didn't initially see any enemy players, so I hopped down and started doing the daily quest. Well, I hadn't gone very far or killed many enemies before I noticed a crowd of enemy players standing around beside the big doors to the next district over.

I immediately popped into stealth, but I very quickly realized that it wasn't just enemies of one alliance there - it was a crowd of DC players and an EP player. The EP player was clearly dueling one of the DC players while the other stood by and watched. I popped out of stealth to approach them, and of course I accidentally aggro'd a Daedroth. One of the enemy players charged over to fight the Daedroth alongside me, and I was reduced to only using light and heavy attacks because literally everything else that I had on my bar would have hit the enemy player as well, and as he clearly didn't mean any ill will towards me, I didn't want to do that.

I watched for a little bit, saluted them, and went off to complete my quest. Here's the odd thing: I felt like while I was doing my quest I wanted to stay relatively close to the enemy players. I figured that they weren't interested in ganking me, but if I went too far away from them I might run into enemy players who were interested in ganking me.

Anyway, when I finished my quest I walked up to them again to salute them once more. One of them fired off a light attack at me and approached blocking, which I assumed was his way of asking if I wanted to duel. By this time I had a decent amount of TV stones on me, so I didn't really want to. Besides, I'm not good at PVP, and I've only done a couple of "for fun" duels on PTS, and I'm sure he wouldn't have found me to be much of a challenge. So I declined and made my way back to the sewers.

In the sewers on my way back to my alliance base, while I was in the middle of a fight with a bunch of mobs and the sweeper boss (the guy who had been grinding in the area earlier was running from him and I got caught in the periphery - ultimately the sweeper boss ended up chasing the other guy out of the room) I saw an enemy player come into the room and immediately stealth to go hide in the corner.

Because of my encounter with honourable enemies up in the Arboretum, I decided to let him know that I knew he was there, but indicate that I wasn't interested in attacking him. So I dropped some shards close to where I knew he was hiding (but not on him) to show that I knew he was there, then held block for a little bit while facing him to try to indicate that I wasn't going to attack, and then gave a /wave in his direction. He didn't pop out of stealth, but I'd like to believe that he understood my intentions, and I happily went back to my base intact and unmolested. Hopefully he made it out OK too.

What's the point of this story? Beats me. I just thought it was an interesting experience all around, because it was very different from most of my experiences with enemy players in Imperial City. I've had a handful of other friendly encounters with enemy players (including the time an enemy player and I were both fishing in stealth at the same fishing hole), but in my personal experience the vast majority of the time when you run into enemies in IC it's when you're getting ganked by them while you're in the middle of fighting a bunch of mobs, or when you get run over by a zerg, and also occasionally in more balanced and fair combat.

Anyway, to whoever I ran into in IC just now (on PC/NA Had), it was nice to see such honourable enemies.

I always enjoying meeting honourable enemies in PvP. I found some questing in Bruma some time back. We waved and went on our separate ways. I assume it will be a lot easier now since you'd be able to recognise your guild mates by their account name so you can acknowledge each other and carry on though I'm not sure some of my guildmates (myself included) would have the same integrity. I have gone out of my way to target guildmates on the battlefield.

I did try to check out their @ names, but I didn't recognize any of the ones I saw.

I don't know, I think the thing that I really liked about it was that they absolutely could have ganged up and slaughtered me in 2 seconds, and they just clearly weren't interested in doing that. Quite a difference from some brief PVP I engaged in on the way to Imperial City, where I had 5 EP players all jump on me at once lol.

I was in IC Sewers a couple weeks back (just before the Event, I think) farming Monster Teeth not far from the DC base, when I see this AD player run into the room. He fired a shard at me but I blocked to indicate I really didn't want to fight him, and he waved at me then started dancing... so funny! This went on until the Daedroth respawned, then I faced away from him so I didn't hit him and he moved on.

Though most of my encounters have been like yours... Once I was hiding while trying to collect Grievous Claws. Two AD players ran into the building and saw me, so I blocked and they moved onward. Just as I was saying, "wow, they didn't kill me!" their Nightblade friend jumped me out of stealth.

I'm happy you had a positive experience in IC. I found most of the time if you make yourself known to an individual who is grinding they will appreciate a mutual agreement to leave one another alone.

Not so much for the bigger groups though, they have the pack mentality to protect each other and will slaughter every thing they see be it friendly or foe.

Interesting. And this was the us server?

I am on EU and my team had just finished blocking night caping AD zerg on Trueflame from emp, and was cooling down with some mindless Imp city killing for stones, mats etc. 6 of us ran into an AD team that later told me they did the same thing.

Our teams fought an extreme and focused battle for over 30 mins, with neither side wiping. Brains were mush from hours in cyro and most was using PvE gear. Even though our team had 2 people left standing, I wouldn't call a 30 mins, non stop, hardcore 6 vs 6, with a surprising equal "skill", team for winning nor loosing.

Both teams was exhausted and couldnt fight anymore, nor did anyone give up. Both teams TS was silent the whole fight.
Both teams had kills which somehow got resed in a VERY closed fighting area, with each other madly trying to interupt.

This gonna sound silly but only way I can describe it is "Thunderdome".

Cudos to the AD Exiled Shannoria and her team.

It ended with both sides could not lift a weapon, but glared at each other.

I tried being friendly to a group of Blues when they stumbled on me in the streets. I held block and steadily retreated away from them and they all decided it was fun to toy with me. They shot off light attacks, they snared me, backed me into a chokepoint, the whole time I wasn't engaging them at all. Finally with all my stamina gone and my health dropping I just gave up, cast my Meteor and spammed Puncturing Sweeps. They finally had their way but I took one with me.

Kinda wish I'd meet more of the type of players you did.

I'd guess that happens a lot to people who are dueling - either because people don't notice that they're doing duels until it's too late, or just because people want to disrupt them.

When IC was still pretty new I was in there with a couple of friends and we ran into an enemy player. We attacked, and he started dancing so we stopped attacking. He whispered one of us and it turned out that he wanted us to kill him because he just wanted a port back to his alliance base and he didn't care about his TV stones.

A couple of times I've tried a jaunty dance to indicate to someone that I'm not interested in a fight, and most times it's resulted in them attacking me. Maybe they're offended by my lack of rhythm.

I have run into a couple of actually good PVP running battles in Imperial City before, where both sides (sometimes all 3 sides) were relatively evenly matched and just kept running into the fray. I'm not much of a PVPer, but I have had quite a bit of fun those few times I've seen that happen.

Usually the only PVP I encounter in IC is the horribly one-sided kind, though, where either one side badly outnumbers the other by 5 or more to 1, or where someone (or two or three) waits in stealth until someone playing solo is close to the end of a fight with a big group of mobs (or a boss) and low on resources, before ganking them.

Case in point: buoyed by my fun experience last night, I briefly ventured into IC sewers before work this morning. I didn't see anyone until I was almost done with a group of a half dozen mobs (including an elite) and my health and magicka were relatively low (magicka was quite low, health wasn't that bad), at which point I was ganked.

There was one time when I had my crafter in IC going to the Armour Master crafting station. Someone attacked me on the way, but I held block and kept backing off and using self-heals. He didn't take the hint that I wasn't there for a fight, so I dropped a meteor on him and killed him. Felt good (especially as I'm not really good at PVP).

But I much prefer it when enemies back off and leave you alone when you make it clear that you're not interested in fighting. I understand it's a PVP zone, and it's perfectly OK for them to want to kill me and attack even if I happen to not want to fight another player at that time, but I just have more respect for the ones who care more about having the challenge of a fair fight than about racking up their kill count.

Many months ago I was just exploring the city and trying to collect tel var. At that point I was a tank so it was hard to kill anything but I noticed a Ebonheart Sorc struggling with one of the mobs and decided to take the risk of him beating the *** out of me for a bit. He wouldn't of been able to kill me... Easily anyway. I came out of stealth and taunted the boss. He killed it eventually-- we stood there for a several moments before he bowed. He messages me saying thank you for leaving me alone and helping me. Apparently he had been trying to finish a daily and kept getting ganked.

I've never seen my friend since :(

Shortly before the IC event started, I was doing some grinding in the IC for TV stones (it was pretty dead back then). I had slipped out of the sewers and into the IC proper and was grabbing what I could while remaining in stealth as much as possible.

At one point, while fighting a mob, I was approached by a number of EP players, who all pitched in to kill the mob. When we were done, they stood there waiting for something, but I wasn't sure what they wanted.

Finally, one of them approaches, doing the block, light attack which I now understand is the gesture for a duel. I used the "no" emote and then the entire group went to block. I got the message: fight one or fight all.

Thing is: I suck at PvP and I pretty much knew I was going to die and lose my stones. But I agreed and we started the duel. By some miracle, I managed to slip out of the duel without dying and with a few more stones. I then expected to have to fight the rest of them, but instead ...

The group just waved at me and left. Kinda cool.

I just had an interesting experience in Imperial City.

Anyway, to whoever I ran into in IC just now (on PC/NA Had), it was nice to see such honourable enemies.

similar experience happened to me too, I got killed by an enemy player in IC district, I am yellow, he was red. I sent him a chat message (I use an addon to be able to message also enemies), something not mean, but a bit funny that he did kill me, I respawned, go to him back, we fought again and again and again. then I saw that there are 2 blue guys behind him, so I wrote him about it, he replied that that are his friends. they dueled, then I dueled. It was nice :).

My trials guild is primarily AD and I'm DC. So one day they decided to go into IC to farm tel var, and I decided to join them. It was pretty fun for the most part, but it is pretty difficult to target an AD ganker in the middle of 6-8 AD allies in the middle of a district boss battle. Although it's pretty funny to call out "MY METEOR" during a boss battle to have other players in TS realize that the meteor wasn't friendly for them, lol.

After a while the other AD started to understand why a DC was following a large group of AD without getting attacked, and the night ended with all three alliances bringing people out for duels in the arboretum.

And other nights, I jump of my base into a sea of stealthed ganking nightblades. Talk about inconsistent play experiences, lol.

Sometimes in IC I like to just walk up beside somebody that I could gank and just light attack the mob they're killing instead. Kinda nice to have those interactions every once in awhile.

Other times though, I will just slaughter them. Unless they are stamina, then I will bounce off them and instantly die.

It might have been you! I was the AD Templar, but there was an AD Nightblade nearby who also went over to the group of duelers while I was in the area.

If it was you, my hat is off to you and your friends - you helped make my time in IC last night fun (even if I didn't duel you).

Yea! I was the one EP dueling the DC while a crowd watched haha. That was fun

similar experience happened to me too, I got killed by an enemy player in IC district, I am yellow, he was red.
Yeah, even when killing each other it's possible to have friendly encounters with enemy players B)

I know there used to be some people on the forums (I can't remember who) who talked about cross-faction guild "friendly fire" events where they would get a bunch of people on characters from all alliances and go around doing delves and dolmens and stuff in Cyrodiil together. The point of it was that they had to be very careful with using AOEs and stuff and try really hard not to kill each other. Sounded like a lot of fun.

And it's totally fair to do both. It's a war zone, so you kind of can't complain if you get ganked. A few weeks ago (just before the IC event was announced) I took a newish character to IC to do some of the quests, and when I went to the Nobles District I saw an enemy player doing the same quest that I was on and defending one of the doors. I decided to jump in and help him, being sure to only use single target abilities and make it clear I was fighting the daedra and not him. I don't think he actually noticed right away what I was doing and he attacked me - I probably could have survived long enough to make it clear I wasn't trying to fight him, but suddenly a friend of his (well, someone from the same alliance anyway) came charging around the corner right into me, and I was dead super fast. I wasn't mad, though, I knew the risks.

We also enjoy ganking each other open world. That was a pretty fun night, though. We had a lot of duels until 7AM EST.

These kind of encounters are very common in Imperial City, where there are pretty much no PVP objectives (maybe except Telvar farming).

Honestly can't wait for the effects of the IC weeks to wean, so we can fight without getting zerged down 1 to 5-10 odds again.

I was once heading into IC to make Master Armour for a 'customer'

my (AD) Mag sorc was specked out for maelstrom, so when i saw 3 DC grinding i waved, but didn't attack, one of the DC waved back
i walked around them making sure i didn't accidentally aggro any of their pull & made my way to the craft station,

when the other 2 DC began attacking me, i streak away stood in front of the craft station held up block trying to indicate... hey guys im just here for the craft station.

the 3rd DC (the one who had waved) began doing bash animation towards his 'alies' (he clearly got my message)

after 3 min, of them trying & failing to even take my shield off i got bored & killed them, i hate 1v1's, i hate 1v2's even more. i panic and usually end up killing myself... so successfully fighting off 2 people was a happy moment for me. managing to do it while ensuring i didnt accidentally attack the friendly (who had taked a few steps bk by this point & was doing the face palm emote) i choose to ignore the fact that their armour was clearly wrecked from grinding , and instead concentrate on the 7K telvars i got for my trouble.

the friendly DC, walked over, laughed (emote) & began bagging his 'allies'

i went in to craft the armour & received a message from the friendly - HA that was amazing, u showed them. told them 2 leave u be, that u were a crafter! but clearly a dps too! LOL so... how much for a set of master armour?

OP glad you had a good PvP experience in the IC. Blocking and not attacking are good ways to indicate you don't want to fight while in the IC. I and the other DC folks I run with usually try to leave such players alone (especially if it's my duo-partner and we come across a single AD/EP player that doesn't want to fight...we usually just wave and go on our merry way...I think it's kind of a chump move for two 2 dudes to jump on a single player that doesn't want to fight). I think Cyrodiil outside the IC is more no holds barred though, as there are keeps and resources to defend and one isn't sure who is a scout, sneak sieger, etc

I've run across cross-faction dueling sessions in the Arboretum multiple times now, and partook in one of them. Perhaps the Arboretum is becoming the unofficial dueling area while in Cyrodiil and Imperial City.

Not exactly IC-related, but on the topic of friendly enemies. While I was doing the town hub quests in Cyrodiil (which I eventually completed, yay me!), I ran into two blues in Bruma that I thought were gonna steamroll me, since I suck at PvP and try to avoid it whenever I can.

Lucky for me, turns out they were questing, too. We simply exchanged some traditional rapid crouching and a /wave or two and went back to the grindstone. It was my most pleasant experience in Cyrodiil to date.

Not IC related either but it was one of the only times I went to Cyrodiil. I had been avoiding PVP like the plague but I decided to go see what it was all about. As this is my first MMO and no experience whatsoever in PVP, I figured I would get slaughtered. But I went into a delve, all was fine until I was on my way out and met an enemy player. We immediately went at it (I was a tank he had a bow). It went on for ages, finally I thought 'well this is going nowhere' and I was getting bored, so I ran to the door, turned to face him and held block to signal that I was done. And we both went on our merry way. :)

In IC I mostly encountered gankers and zergers. I run alone, so I usually beat the former but not the latter. Once I cleared the dolmen in Bruma together with a smurf player. It was hard not hitting each other with AoEs so we kept to opposite sides of the anchoring point. At the end we both looted the chest and went our separate ways.

BTW has anyone noticed that the Bruma dolmen spawns generals far more than others, or is it just my RNG?

I love meeting honourable enemies, especially given that any enemy with max CPs will single-handedly massacre a mid-level NB guy like myself (such is the crappy grind of MMOs). I love it when PVP/PVE areas have the threat of PVP action, but folks are reasonable enough to work together (even if they could in theory kill eachother). I remember doing a Dolmen once with a EP guy, trying not to get caught in eachother's cross-fire; it was great craic. Mostly I've come across trigger-happy AD/EP übermensch in IC though, which is a pity. Perhaps some day.

That is such a rare scenario it does deserve its own thread. Whenever I go to Cyrodiil or IC and attempt to do anything on my own that is not PVP I am regularly ganked by groups laying in wait for a straggler to come along. I assume that every enemy I see wants to kill me and they have night blade friends waiting in stealth, because it's usually true. It is the Alliance War after all. The exception was that one time at a dolmen when there was just one enemy player trying to do the dolmen too.

Speaking of just trying to PVE in the PVP zone, last night I got jumped and killed by a half dozen DC while killing small waves of mobs for a quest in IC. The SECOND time the exact same thing happened I just laid there dead afterward. The mobs killed half of them and I got credit for quest completion and the "kill enemy players" quest. So I guess dying isn't all bad!

Well It was not in IC but in cyro. Some NB jumped on me trying to gank me, but as I was on my magplar anti gank toon it was him who died. We had nice conversation about our classes and possible ways to improve our toons, and after that he warned me that entire zerg of his alliance players is going my way so it would be better for me to hide. So yeah, even when someone is gankin you, melt you in sec or is unkillable you can be nice to them. I very often whisp to players that killed me with some amazing skills or simply when they are dealing WOW! damage that they did rly good job, whishing them many kills. If someone is killing you thanks to his skillful gameplay he deserves for respect, if he does it by ganking you with velidreth+ viper its not skill, those are broken sets same as blackrose + malubeth. There was a days when ganking required some skill, it was just opener so you could start fight against enemy at your terms, but now its just about building so much burst with rng sets so you will be able to kill most of the people without even fighting them. So respect for all PvPers that against all ods stay friendly and respectful for their enemies.
I'm done with this game because of ZOS pushing us into Vengeance, because they don't know how to fix Cyrodiil.

lol and of course last night I decided to briefly go to IC again to maybe do a daily or two. In one of the districts I had to go AFK for a bit, so I stealthed in a place where no mobs would get me. Obviously I knew there was a good chance to come back to find that I'd been killed while AFK. What I wasn't expecting was to come back to find 5 different names on my death recap... Really? It took at least 5 guys to kill the guy who was AFK? That's just pathetic...

Much respect for people like the ones I talked about in my first post here, and like some of the experiences others have talked about in this thread. Zero respect for zerglings who swarm over solo enemies, especially if the enemy isn't even moving.
