What's RNG?

I've been continuously farming Vet Maelstrom on four different characters for the past month. Four full weeks. Every day.

Almost every single run gives a sword+shield, restoration staff or a bow. No two handed, no destro staves with non-charged traits & definitely nothing good.

Each mail always contains a resto staff (I've deconstructed dozens of these) or a sword+shield (I've deconstructed at least 50 of these) with a Glorious Defender necklace or a Healthy Succession ring.

This week's weekly mails have just been sent out and all of my mails contained Sword+Shield.

The above picture is of one character's inventory at the moment. Still deconstructing the charged weapons. After, will go to the other characters' inventories which have even more swords+resto staves.

There is no RNGesus in Maelstrom. May RNGesus save us all.

When you guys are in a hospital bed dying from old age, you are going to regret all that youth spent in VMA.

Honestly I'm still going to farm vMA for weekly leaderboards but the odds of getting the same weapons in all mails disturb me. I don't think it's random anymore. There's definitely set rates of drops per weapon and I'm guessing swords/shields/resto staves are like 85%-90% of the drops.

    Not with this attitude.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

    RNG?

You remember when you could still get purple motif's or recipes from chests, closets etc?

Well I don't. I have never EVER gotten one by looting chests and closets or any container. Since day one I have looted every container I came across during my adventure. 2 times a week I had a looting spree where I would visit all major cities which I unlocked during my questing and looted all containers I could find. Never gotten any purple recipe or motif.

When they hit the crownstore, I gave up looting because I was pretty sure the chance would be ever smaller to find it as loot.

Thankfully I had guildies who did find them so I could at least learn some purple recipes. The only purple motif I ever had was the barbaric which I bought and the glass which I bought from crownstore.

RNG in TESO's code looks like this.

    IF player=Knootewoot then RNG=0%

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

Probably some algorithms in the game that detect what is trending and then tweak their drop rate. There are many hidden rng modifiers that players just don't know about. I know of one but I'm not sharing my secret because it helps me a lot. ;) The other possibility is that the devs know exactly what you want, and the drop rate continues to decrease for those items the more you play so you won't flood the market with them. They leave these details to guess so players won't figure out how to exploit them, though BoP item drop rates are just tweaked to force you to grind more.

    The rng works like this:
Imagine 1,000 boxes containing possible rewards. Each has a number assigned to it, 1-1000. When you finish whatever you are doing, you get a random number which gives you the box with that number. The reason you get the same stuff is because they put those items in maybe 900 of the boxes. Who knows what the percentage is of each item? But this is how the engine decides what you get.

I believe it's completely random. Whenever someone posts a list of weapons they have it's always different to mine. Out of about 20 weapons I have 2 sharpened; an ice staff and a bow. A couple of defending, a nirnhoned, precise, infused, powered, etc. A completely random selection basically, and no more than 2 of any trait. 3 S&B, 3 fire staves, 1 ice staff, no shock staves, 2 resto staves, a bow, a dagger, 4 axes, a maul and a 2h sword. What I actually want is a sharpened fire staff, so far the ones I've had are defending, infused and nirnhoned. I'm not complaining about the sharpened ice staff, and if I had a stam character I'm sure I'd love the sharpened bow I have, but they're not sharpened fire staves. My point is I think the drops are completely random, what isn't random are what people hope for; it's our biased desires that make it seem weighted. And really it's rng on rng, because you have a chance to get a certain weapon and then a separate chance to get a certain trait on that weapon. It's a lottery and you lose most of the time.

I just remember how the rng in Skyrim worked as far as selecting the outfits and weapons for each random guard or bandit. I learned how it was done while creating edits to the guards in the creation kit. They would have several different boxes in the random guards inventory, but only one of them could actually be chosen. If you wanted a higher chance for each guard to have one weapon instead of the other, you would just add more of those containers to the selection. I'm not certain this is how it is done in this game, however, I have a strong feeling that weapons are not randomly created, they already exist in a lineup of several different possible boxes, and some are in more boxes than others. Just my guess based on what I've seen from the single player creation kit. Perhaps ZoS has a completely different generator.
