Does anyone else use console text chat?

I am not sacrificing good sound to add a text pad. Does not work well with 3rd party head phones.

I see very few text bubbles even in the undaunted areas.

Text chat has really added nothing to the game from a console perspective.

On PC you are actively using the keyboard so typing is natural. Does not work that way in console.

Just because it doesn't offer anything for you doesn't mean others feel the same, that's a ridiculous statement spoken like a fact when in fact it's just you're opinion.

Also, not everyone has the same setup as you. I have a 42" TV, and I like sitting as close to it as possible without being too close to see the peripherals well, which with my TV's size means I sit with my knees a few inches from my TV stand (sitting in a computer chair with wheels, so I move the chair to and from the TV as needed). As a result of this, I have the ability to put a keyboard right in front of the TV on the stand and have easy access to it while playing, allowing me to drop the controller in my lap and type something quickly before picking it back up again.

My only serious complaints about Text Chat are that you can't type while fighting and you can't type while dead, both of which are serious detractors that make no sense to be like that. On PC that's one thing, you use the same buttons to fight that you use to type, but these are consoles and keyboards are absolutely not being used to play with, so having it work that way on Consoles is pointlessly limiting and utterly without sense. And not being able to type while dead is equally confounding, you can use voice chat while dead so there's absolutely no valid reason to not be able to use text chat.

It's an excellent and extraordinarily useful feature though even with those detractors, no question. If you don't find it useful for you then that's your prerogative, but that's no grounds to suggest that it adds nothing to the game, that's a profoundly foolish and wildly inaccurate thing to say.

Never stated anything as fact. Calm down. I did not know that I had to type /opinion in front of it so every one understood there was no claim to fact.

I have no issue with people liking it it. If there are people that are enjoying it then fantastic. I hope some people had there enjoyment levels elevated.

I still do not see the need for it on console.

Console chat is awesome if you have a wireless keyboard. It's hard to be involved in more than one voice chat, but it's easy to be involved in 4 separate conversations with text chat.

    zone is useful in pvp.

You need to look back at those posts apparently, he said something foolish and I called him on it, then he told me to calm down and proceeded to explain to me that his words somehow had different definitions than were listed in the dictionary and it was my fault for not realizing that. Just because his attitude was more subtle doesn't mean it wasn't there, and I responded in kind, and I couldn't care less if you think I'm a troll or not because if you do you haven't got the slightest clue what you're talking about, and if so this conversation is pointless. You called me out though, and now that I've told you how wrong you are I'm done here, accept the truth or not as you see fit, it's not my problem.

Yes, our views are our opinions, that's kind of the definition of views (in this context). It is a fact however that text chat being added is extraordinarily helpful and useful, and anyone saying differently is flat-out wrong. It may not be useful to individual people, but it's undeniably useful in general whether it's made use of by individuals or not, a subtly that some people seem to be missing.

    /opinion
I still do not see the need for it on console.

It's called the English Language, use it properly or don't, but you can't hold it against me when you don't.

I guess the same had to be said for you as well. You can't make something up in your mind and apply it to my words.

You said something as a fact that wasn't, you can't just use whatever words you want in whatever order you want and have them mean something other than what they actually mean. And also I'm perfectly calm, if anything I almost laughed out loud when I saw your first post, not quite but close.

I can tell you are bothered by it.

Again never stated anything as fact.

Hmm... Bothered, that's a funny word for amused, not the one I would have picked but then you seem to have a loose relationship with English, whatever floats your boat dude doesn't bother me in the slightest. If you didn't mean what you said then we have nothing more to talk about, but it's you who said it wrong, all I did was read the words as you wrote them, and if anyone seems to have a problem with it it's you buddy.

You should try being more of a condescending troll.

Hey, I'm no troll, I took issue with what this guy said and he tried to tell me (in not so many words) that I was an idiot for not understanding that he meant something besides what the words he used meant. It's not my fault he decided to get short with me, am I guilt of getting short with him in return? Yes, absolutely, but that's just what I do. I'm no saint but I'm no troll either, and I treat people however they treat others.

When I see someone being respectful then I'm respectful, and when someone gives me *** I give them *** right back. I'm neither proud nor ashamed of it, it is what it is, if he didn't want me to throw a jibe at him then he shouldn't have thrown one at me, and I'm no troll because I refuse to take *** from people who are full of it.

He never once came close to calling you an idiot until you attacked him first. Regardless of anyone's understanding of the English language, that's a fact.

You took "the same can be said for you" as him calling you an idiot. Ironic. But hey, whatever helps you cope with being a troll, man.

Lol, wow that's some selective reading their bub, and also an entirely unfounded leap. I meant the post before that one as being him calling me an idiot, that post was just him being obnoxious. Looks like lots of people need to brush up on their English, damn son.

Ive got a good understanding of English, as I am in fact 'English'. Ive read through the whole thread and I cant see any post, edited or otherwise, where he calls you 'an idiot'. It does read to me like you've gone on the rampage against someone giving his opinion (however bluntly) that text chat is not useful. You then start claiming 'FACT' about things which ironically are clearly not fact at all but again, your 'opinion'.

but back to OP, I see lots of people using text in the learner areas. Mix of spam selling and grouping. The guild im in use it.

He said that text chat wasn't useful, and ended it at that. Text chat may not be useful to him, but it's unquestionably useful to have more means of communication, saying otherwise is overtly foolish. It's an absolutely positive change, and even if he didn't mean it that way, he said it as if there were no exceptions to what he was saying. I took issue with it accordingly, people are all too keen to say things are facts when in fact that's just their opinion, it's not my fault he failed to clarify what he meant until after.

And yes I could have been nicer about it but I wasn't mean either, just blunt. The more people take issue with me, the more I take issue with them, sometimes to a fault but it's better than letting people walk all over you. Admittedly this blew up in a way I did not anticipate and would like to have avoided had I possessed the foresight to do so, but nobody's perfect and I won't be losing any sleep over it.

How does it work? I'm guessing you use your controller on some kind of interface, but can you plug a keyboard into your console too?

    Any usb keyboard will work.

Oh that's good. The best controller interface I've seen is a mod for wow but even that looked like a massive pain to use.

It's still a little wonky. AFAIK, all of the commands from PC chat are the same on console chat, but selecting which chat to use is kind of a pain.

How so? Just enter /g for group, /g1-5 for guild chats (depending on which order your guilds are listed in), /s for say, /z for zone, and /y for yell. It couldn't be simpler.

/whisper has a couple bugs. I've been intermittently unable to reply to a whisper I received. No, I wasn't dead. It didn't even work after travel-to-player dumped me into rawlka.

Also might help to know exactly how far zone will go. Is it just to the edge of a normal doorway loading screen? If so, then the big tree crafting area is separate from the tree way shrine, which seems small. How far does /yell go?

We console players are used to a closer boundary of area voice, where people talking next to the vulkel gard way shrine cannot be heard by the time you get to the vulkel gard bank, for example. So, with that experience in mind just how far does /say travel?

This shouldn't be something each person learns by experiment, it should be documented somewhere. Preferably in the in-game help menu about text because it is a console after all.

Zone is the whole zone, if you're in Glenumbra then everyone in that instance will hear/see it. As for /say, I don't know its range, I'm afraid if that information is out there you'll have to ask someone else.

So to answer the OP again.....many of the last comments are one example why I personally was against text chat and these types of interactions, thought infrequent so far, could be why it's not used a lot.

It leads more often to misinterpretations and misunderstandings

There would be opportunities to do things outside of an immediate remadius via text but some PC functions aren't present so for me personally and my observations this week from actually using it everyday when I'm online via the Xbox brand chat pad.....it's largely not used or largely not responded to.

Even if the text was always on the screen (which would really irritate me more) voice chat is easier and works better.

Now I'll say that Xbox one offers different console specific options that most players tend to use over in-game chat and that's consistently a practice regardless of the game (this is simultaneously offering text and voice in one place for up to 12 players )

We've only had chat for a week... Give it a little more time. Not everyone is on the forums reading the patch notes like us. Also, I have seen many guildmates use it and even sending their loot in chat to ask for a price check! I LOVE the new chat and will be trying to use the Playstation App on my phone as a keyboard! If you know the / commands the guild's are /g1, /g2, etc. group is /p

But if you just open the full view and move the thumb stick to the left it populates a list to select from. Start there and then close the full screen and hit enter for future msgs.

So slash commands or full screen are options

    Hope that helps
