Dyeing Costumes

Just random babbling so I can make the last 10 min of work pass by.

I would love to be able to dye the costumes and outfits we get. The Jesters comes to mind. Just bright yellow!!

More importantly and personally the Orc ones form Wroth-gar. To die the bear head black or brown. Keep them colors that would find in the world. So I don't know if a pink or purple bear would work.

Just thoughts.

Good point actually I never considered the jester costume. Would be awesome if I could dye that.

I'd love to be able to dye my elven hero costume...someone in the ESO art department has a fetish for greens. I'd like the costume to be dark like it was in the trailers...but then I'd like it without the pants on the female version so its a skirt with thigh high boots...you know...like the trailers.

What? You don't enjoy the exciting colors of gray, brown, and off-white that ZOS uses in almost every single costume?

I don't buy them because they all look the same. They're dull and boring, with very few exceptions. Once you've seen one Crown Store costume, you've seen them all.

Costume dyeing is something they have mentioned they'd like to do if I remember right.

I'd love to dye my Mages Guild robes blue! I mean it's all Ancient Elf except the shawl and minus the shiny plastic texture, I don't know how coding works for this kind of thing but most of the work seems like it's already been done. There are a lot of other costumes which use elements of dyeable in-game armors as well - soul-shriven, armored knights, tribal shaman, woodland scouts etc.

Pretty sure I read that somewhere too. Also, they showed us some of the Crown Store costumes with different colours in Thieves Guild so here's hoping it's being worked on!

On a side-note, weapon dyes so I don't have to match my armor colours with my ridiculous red and green weapons would be great too!

The reason they can't because of how everything is layered. As far as I can figure it we have the following layers:
    • Character
    • Armor
    • Dye
    • Costume

The armor layer is the layer that gives players their stats... the Dye layer explicitly alters the visuals of the armor layer. The costume layer overlays a visual over the Dye Layer or the Character Layer. I think costumes technically alter the Dye layer and Tabards and skins technically alter the Character layer. This is why tabards and skins can be worn with dyed armor, but can't be worn with costumes, they occupy the same layer but are applied differently.

If ZOS were to add a second costume layer they could, possibly, allow players to have skins/tabards and then allow us to have costumes as well, but that wouldn't allow us to dye the armor. In order to do that ZOS would have to add a dye layer to the costume layer. So to get all the options we want, they would need to add the following:
    • Character
      • Character Costume <- NEW
      • Character Costume Dye <- NEW
    • Armor
    • Armor Dye
    • Costume
      • Costume Dye Layer <- NEW

So 3 more layers added to the 4 we have. I have no idea what kind of additional resources that would require... and I think there is a simpler way to give us what we want.

Personally, I think ZOS should just release motifs of costumes. Let us have the costumes but also let us craft individual pieces of costumes that would occupy the armor layer, like clothes & armor pieces do.

Many of us want Dyable Costumes but there are some technical hurdles that prevent this. Here is a possible solution:

Just as we have Costumes of Existing Motifs, we should have Motifs for all non-polymorph costumes. All costumes that change what we wear (not what we are) should be available as a craftable items. Assign appropriate armor value to clothes and armors and allow players to create their own, mix and match, and dye these items.

Players could still buy costumes to change their look as they do now, but those that wear costumes can't dye their costumes. This is a choice the player has to make and that restriction should remain the same. If they want to wear awesome armor, but be wearing a wedding dress, then that wedding dress has to be white.

However, if a player wants to wear a heavy cuirass with a red wedding dress skirt and red/black jesters arms, they'll need the appropriate motifs.

    TL/DR

In addition to costumes, ZOS should sell Costume Motifs so players can craft, dye, and mix and match pieces of costumes as much as they want.

I'm sure if they could dye costumes they wouldn't give us that option, instead they will make an alternate colored version of the same costume then sell it in the crown store.

As much as I would loathe that option @phaneub17_ESO , it's the most realistic one to expect.

Id love to see this feature. Even if it cost me 500 crowns [[per recolor, I'd actually buy this feature. Not everyday, but when I get tired of the colors, I'd be happy to pay zos up again.

500 crowns fpr satisfaction with how my char looks <3

Really? That would be wonderful if that was the case, but more importantly, if it actually happened.
ZoS has a track record of saying at one point or another almost everything is something they'd like to do or words to that effect.
    Still fingers crossed, here's hoping!

Well I must admit nothing screams ESO lore like my banana yellow sorc in his jester costume!!!!

I do not even mind the prices, they are fine. Pics a few colors you want. Plus when you take the costume off and then back on, the colors stay. Its alot of fun.

Glad ESO listened to me :hushed:
