Is Animation Cancelling Considered Cheating or Exploiting? Are the consequences the same? If At All?

I respect your opinion. However, I disagree with your logic. So, animation canceling is a skill based aspect of the game. It requires skill/practice. You said that it's not fair, but if one person has not spent time to master a certain aspect of the game, while the opponent has, that opponent should have the upper hand. It's like me saying someone who has played longer than me and more skilled than me has an unfair advantage. It's not an unfair advantage.

And I respect yours. However, I do not see AC as "skillful". I see it as a pointless action that devolves into a spam-fest. It is a rhythmic movement thing that I think appeals to certain people- and as a piano player I can kinda understand that. But it takes away from a situational awareness for the spammer and the spammed. I've also felt it favors people with better latency and FR. All just my own personal thoughts on it as an old school gamer who is probably stuck in the past. As a musician and someone with good internet I probably could master it myself. Perhaps I'm just not hyper competitive enough to do so and to each his own. And no, Kena I am not looking to 1vX on this topic. It's probably one as many have said that's been beaten to death.

It wasn't meant to be a part of the game. ZoS did not intentionally add it, but once it was discovered and used, they decided to keep it.

Yea mostly because they probably couldn't fully remove it without harming their game. The system was supposed to be changed to force animations to be visible and right now is say it's as fair as we will get.

There's other fish to fry in the grand scheme of balance.

My question is, why is animation canceling a problem for any of you? It's the only thing in the game that even resembles a "combo."

Because the idea of a combo system was also beyond ZOS technical expertise. So many possible combos come to mind, but there's no coding for it here. It's a shame, it might also foster better group play.

Proud single player gamer here. however, the large group play promise is what attracted me to ESO. I love the whole teamwork aspect, even if it's only a small team of 2 or 3 having fun together. And I think I'm not unique in that I find it highly annoying when I die instantly without seeing any combat or being afforded a decent opportunity to block.

But neither of those have anything to do with AC. Do you play without sound? You can literally tell the difference between every attack just by listening. Combat music plays before you even get hit by any ability allowing you to block an incoming attack from a ganker. If you're up against a certain class you can be blind and deaf and still know what skills they're going to use because this game only has 5 skill slots.

Here we go again.... Because AC was NOT intended to be exploited in the original game design. Later, when they determined that they could not address the exploit, they called it a feature. The whole discussion was well documented and can be searched for.

So AC became known as the "feature" called "weaving". Once a documented exploit, always an exploit, regardless of how it got spun.

    FACT.

I hear ya, but I think there would be so many skills rendered useless. Can you imagine a light destro, crushing shock weave where a whole animation that couldn't be clipped, and how mundane that would be? Or a light attack puncture(h-slash) bash? People would run 2h dizzying swing way more than they do already. I understand the animation prioritization so the whole second half of the then wrecking blow animation was cancelled doesn't happen (as much, or at all that I can tell, however I haven't touched the skill in so long).

Added: I just don't understand who's day is really being ruined that much by it, because I am not having these issues.

Just because someone doesn't like it or thinks it's exploiting a bug does not mean they can't do it . I can do it and faster them most of the people out there . Still don't like it . I got so tired of doing it I swapped builds . After 2 years of killing people in one round of attacks , it got boring for me . I went back and played other games for awhile where you have to time the animation and hit your next attack as fast as possible . It was harder after being here so long . The people that stayed there became very skilled at cast time selection , a whole different skill set on top of builds for elite 1vsX play .

you didn't do the research did you? Taking advantage of a bug is by definition exploiting.

It was exploited by scrubs (like you maybe), and it's become the defacto standard now to be competitive. I can animation cancel with the best of them, and sadly it's pretty much required in PVP at this point. That doesn't make it less an exploit of scrubby.

I luv where you wrote "zos decided to keep the bug".... LOL! Keep the bug indeed? Oh Lee, we've been over this soo many times, and you still fail.

What would happen if is wasn't hear, the gameplay would slow to a crawl, it would be so easy to dodge/block everything in pvp.

Is that what you want? Easier slower pvp, the game to just turn into spamming 1-2 skills over and over? With 0 reaction time required.

Spam-fest? The game is a spam fest regardless. Chances are you are not dieing because of animation canceling.. its bad bad bad play in every aspect. build/skill/positioning etc.

Yeah this game is a spamfest! lol. Probably why every now and then I switch to FO....V.A.T.S is a nice submersive combat mode and one I really enjoy. :)

I dont think you have to be hyper competitive to be able to weave in a light/heavy attack or bash. Its a really simple mechanic. But my suspicions are correct. I know a single player gamer when i see one. ;)

I really am not interested in debating this, especially with the likes of you. I've stated my opinion. I can see both sides, really, but tend to fall on the side of not being able to obscure combat in any way.

It's allowed, and it should stay. No need to remove more skill requirement from the game.

    macros are not skill.

    AC exists on console.

When people get out skilled the first instint is always 'macro's it seems on pc.

what you call a skill, I'll never consider anything but an exploit... which is what it is, macros or manual.

    Why is it an exploit?

Here we go again.... Because AC was NOT intended to be exploited in the original game design. Later, when they determined that they could not address the exploit, they called it a feature. The whole discussion was well documented and can be searched for.

So AC became known as the "feature" called "weaving". Once a documented exploit, always an exploit, regardless of how it got spun.

    FACT.

They can change it if they wanted to. They just don't want to. If we're mentioning FACTS :p

It not being intended does not make it a bug. It makes it unintended. What they decide to classify it after it becomes known to them is entirely up to them, and in this case they decided it wasn't a bug. They embraced AC, and rightfully so as it provides much smoother and responsive combat than you would get otherwise. Less so now after the recent priority changes unfortunately.

An easy fix to the ridiculous bursting ability that AC currently gives is only have a .25 second window for animations to be allowed to be canceled. In other words, block only takes top priority for .25 seconds (perhaps even less time than that) after attacks are initiated. This way not enough of the animation has triggered for the ability to cause damage but users still have the opportunity to cancel an attack if they're anticipating an attack coming from their opponent. This would ultimately cause gameplay in both PVE and PVP to become more reactionary and less of a dps race/instagib fest.

For ZOS to remove "weaving" which is the correct term because your not really canceling anything. They would have to rework how combat works entirely. What you are doing is adding a light/heavy attack to your normal rotation of just spamming a skill.

AC / Weaving is a product of games with skills and attacks on different GDC's or cast times. For example in WoW you can play a mage cast a fireball and a fireblast right after. What you get is two skills hitting at the same time and is only possible because fireball is 3 second cast and fireblast is instant cast. Before fireball is even casted your one second GDC is up allowing you to cast another skill and in this case its fireblast. In wow you cant do this every time because fireblast had a cooldown.

In eso we have the same thing except skills dont have a cooldown outside of the GDC and light/heavy attacks are not part of the GDC for actual skills. Players can then "Weave" a light/heavy attack which is not a bug or exploit in any way sorry.

If ZOS were to add light/heavy attacks to the GDC they would become almost pointless. Except i think you need them now to generate ulti.... I dont even know lol.. simple solution revert to 1.5.
