Increased character slots

Even though it's only been a short time since the rolling out of Dark Brotherhood and the subsequent increase in character slots by four, per server, is it likely we'll get a further similar increase at some later stage either this year or the next?

The 4 slot increase was expected for a long time, since you could easily see 4 more gaps in the character select window.
There is no more place for character slots beyond 12.

That does not mean it is impossible, but I highly doubt it.

Actually there is a slider on the side, if you have 12 characters, because the last entry does not fit in full on the screen without a slider - ZOS could add slots, but to be honest, I have all hands full to manage my 12 already, I personally would not buy more slots, even I am an altoholic myself.

Around a dozen characters is as well what I can manage in other games - I have 11 characters in EVE for example - I could have a lot more, because I have 7 accounts (not all active though) and could have 21 characters there - but then I would loose the inner connection I have with my characters and immersion would be lost, if I cannot identify with them anymore, because they become too unfamiliar to me.

Haha wow! Thanks for making me feel much better about my own altoholism!

Yes, I would make more alts, even already having 12 on each server. Because that's nothing, I already have 150 swtor characters, all of whose names and backgrounds and personalities I know by heart, and when playing that character, can easily slip into the essence of what makes them who they are. Same with my 24 ESO ones...

But that is partly because ESO characters are not so streamlined in levelling experience as the swtor ones are.

Of course I cannot possibly prove the above to any of you, but then nor should I be expected to.

If they added another 4 slots per server, I would imagine I'd make 5 more NBs, to cover those species with whom I've not made an NB (Breton, Dunmer, Imperial, Nord, Orc), and two more sorcs (Argonian, another Breton, as I already have one of these, who is my NA main) and a templar spellsword (Dunmer). I even have in mind exactly how they would all look, in the event that I were able to make them, as well as the basics of a background for each.

Not that I'd be *too* bothered if they never added any more slots ever again, but I like variety, and all my characters have varied backgrounds, though some are related to each other: parents, siblings, cousins, whatever. Some of these new ones I had in mind would indeed be related to some of those currently in existence.

As Lysette says, there is a slider, so they could add more. Were I ZOS adding character slots, I would've doubled the number available, rather than increase it by merely 50%. It's not as if people should feel compelled to make more characters if they don't want to, anyway. So there being more slots added should not really affect anyone, especially as you can't log into more than one character at once, under normal circumstances anyway, probably.

But, as I've said, I'm quite prepared to live with it if they never add any more slots ever again; I merely wanted to know the likelihood of them ever giving people the chance to make more, if such players wanted to.

hahahahaha - that is putting altoholism to a whole new level

150 characters - that is, let me think, about a medium sized auditorium full of people when giving a talk and I would have to know all of them by heart - I could not do that, i guess - you seem to have an extremely good memory.

I have 7 nightblades, i and many people still don't have over 8 characters. So why would they increase the character slots?
Maybe in another year or so they would increase it by like 4.

    Economics.

They will keep an eye on the sales of additional slots and if there is still demand they will supply. Someday.

But like has been said, without new races/classes it's difficult to see much demand beyond what is available now.

To me it is more about immersion, and a dozen characters is an amount where i can still relate to and feel into my character. More would make it difficult to spend enough time with them to still have a connection with them and immerse into them.

To give an example, I once had 16 characters in EVE - now I have 11 - at times I could not even remember their correct names, when I did not play them frequently enough, so I got rid of 5 to let me connect with my characters again.

you are missing out on experimenting with all the variations and permutations possible across the races and classes.

that is the thing that brought me back to this game.

I am currently tinkering with respecs to get a good hybrid build for One Tamriel (I know a lot of you will say, there are no good hybrid builds, but I count in the fun factor as well and then there are). This is quite interesting to do with all the different races.

    10 races

    4 classes

    stam or mag by class

    x hybrids

so you need at least 80 alts times how many possible hybrids

so call it at least 400 slots to try a range of the possibles - i have a feeling the number is probably higher.

Yes but a whole lot of them would be quite similar to each other - it is not as if this would be a huge variety of really different characters, most of them would be much alike to a whole lot of others.

I will give a practical example with ships in EVE - basically an equivalent to this - the t3 strategic cruiser class - it can be configurated with subsystems in 1024 ways, which is just the configuration of the basic ship, which does not have modules fitted to it yet. There are tens of thousands of different modules you could fit to this ship.

But in fact, by practical reasons, most of those combinations are suboptimal and in the end you end up with a couple of configurations for the subsystems, which basically defines the role of your ship - and then the amount of possiblities to fit your ship with modules will as well not be that huge, because experience lets you fit your ship for a certain role always in a similar way, because it works.

So this high variety is just an illusion - theoretically there, but practically non-existent.

    well..... yes and no.

you have the race perks to consider and the different gear sets possible plus the variations in cp allocation.

i'm beginning to think that 400 is at least an order of magnitude too low

I love rolling alts but as @Lysette stated, at some point many would be too similar to each other. I prefer a stable of toons I can feel a connection to. I have very recently thought of getting the 4 more slots to give me an even dozen ESO chars. One class for each faction. The way I roll alts now, no two are the same regarding class skills (i.e. I have 3 sorcerers: 1 storm, 1 summoning, and 1 dark magic) The only thing they share are non class skills sometimes.

Yes, I have as well quite "odd" fitted ships in EVE - and many just look at me as if I am a bit mad - but, I have never lost my life or a combat ship in a PvP battle, my ships work, I might not be the best damage dealer, but to me it is more important to never loose a ship. In this I am quite different from normal PvP players as well, they do not really care, their alliances refund them for lost ships - but I want to stay alive, maybe with a massively damaged ship, but this thing is still flying and I leave the battle field alive - this counts to me more than anything else. Especially because I fly expensive t3 strategic cruisers, I do not want to loose that ship - I could easily afford the loss of the ship, but the loss of pride would be horrible.

Its highly complex and you need to learn it - but over the years that stuff is in your blood and you do it quickly and in the right way. All just a matter of experience.

If you look carefully, I did not say that I never lost a ship, just never lost one in a battle - I was ganked once in an industrial ship and I lost one in PvE because I was too lazy to call my drones back before I went against the last enemy - forgetting that my drones are my main weapon and that my launchers on that ship were just decoration, as lethal as marsh mellow launchers - so I lost that one - but those were the only 2 ships I ever lost in EVE and that was many years ago.

Similar thing happened lately with my sorceress in ESO - because I was too lazy to summon my clanfear - I just thought, well him or me - well, I went down, because without my clanfear I could not kite that enemy anymore.

EVE is PvP-compulsory, so I'd never touch it, ever.

For my part, it's not just the difference in abilities that make all my alts special; it's also their personalities, none of them are in any way "clones".

you can play EVE perfectly fine without to ever PvP - but you will always be matter to PvP, because it is enabled everywhere.

Btw that is a totally normal experience for newbies there - CCP said, that 50% of those, who try EVE give up within 2 hours - EVE is just not for everyone. Normally we tend to count someone as an EVE player, when he/she has survived the first year and is subbed for another 6 months at least - that is one who could become a real EVE player.

That's what I mean, there is no protection from it anywhere, and so I'd automatically not play it. For this reason, UWO has also turned me off ever beginning to play it.

Every game that features inescapable PvP, I don not play.

Anyway, back to the question, it seems like the consensus is that ZOS is unlikely to ever give us the potential for more character slots.

There are a couple of simple rules to follow - never use auto-pilot, that is asking for being ganked - that is one of those, but there are a whole lot more to stay alive.

But then again, good players would never shoot a newbie or someone who is just for a couple of months in EVE - that would by a dirt spot on their kill-mail-record. Can happen accidently though, then you say sorry, give him like 20 million and he will be happy again.

Well, I already have all 12 characters and find myself with much to do. I hope they implement account wide achievements (not on all of them) so I can focus on the end game meat (trials, vet dungeons). Things like fishing I already did on one toon and dont wanna do it again on my 11 other toons.

About more character slots, I think it will ruin my sense of fun, because people are leaving out DLC zones like Orsinium and TG because there is much less people doing the worldbosses and having new characters would mean non finished zones. At present, IC is a lost cause for me because I dont find people who can do it regularly (and soloing is pretty impossible since I am not a NB).
