Not just game dev, any kind of software dev, really. You go from thinking "how can it not be that simple?!" to "oh God, how did I ever think it was that simple?!"
I mean, by all means, be frustrated. But as someone with software dev experience, you just tend to think of it from the other side of the coin where they're probably just as annoyed as you are. Hell, I am when something breaks for seemingly no reason. Especially login/authentication, because that's pretty much the entry point so you can't do anything else! So you guys definitely have my sympathies, and my gratitude that you're staying on top of it.
I too can sympathize having worked on call tech support for banks and credit unions. A 3AM call was expected a 15 minute response time at maximum. Oh and yes you were expected to report in to work in the morning at your normally designated time the next day. Godspeed and I wish you a more restful weekend once the issues have been squashed.2 -

They listened to user feedback about the issue (both helpful and the smart-ass comments).
The took the server down to, you know, troubleshoot and resolve.
When they've fixed it, they'll put back up.
It's no different than an authentication server on a business network.
And lots of things would need to authenticate during a playing session.
So why listen to people complain about the game not working while they are in it, when they can listen to people complain when they AREN'T in it.
FFS people, read a book, talk to a friend - do something other than being a jerk.
[Hard Mode Dungeoneers] is recruiting all players of all levels for this new Guild.
THIS IS A NEW-BUT-GROWING GUILD. We are focused on doing vet pledges, vet dungeons, getting achieves, & doing hard mode bosses.

Unequipping the staff only stops it until you equip it again. Relogging only works until you use some skills with the staff again. So yeah, totally messed up.

✭Whatever it is, it's affecting EU aswell. It dropped me and my wife from the game after a infinite loading screen and couldn't get back in for about 20 minutes. Kept getting login timeout errors.
