Does the heal only work on allies or can it heal self as well?

It will self heal but embers is better as you control it rather than wait 5s and it'll proc if you're at full health making it a waste. Go with flames of Oblivion instead.

Cauterize cannot target the caster. If you intend to be anything other than a healer, chances are you will want Flames of Oblivion, that much is true, but I like to think there is room for flexibility, and I've found some interesting uses for it Cauterize in pvp too. Perhaps not optimal, but enjoyable.

    It only heals allies.

I use the Flames of Oblivion morph now, and my Dragonknight is a healer. Cauterize just wasn't working for me.

Your mileage may vary, of course! :)

    Thanks all.

Was just looking for more heals so I didn't have to run resto on back bar

Guess mutagen and healing ward are going to be my heals

I'd be happy to share some insight into DK healing if you're interested. I haven't published a guide on it yet, but have considered doing so as the level of interest in DK healing continues to rise.

Cauterize does work quite well on a DW back-bar for a DK healer, but I caution doing this in trials. For dungeons, there's not really anything stopping you from running a damage-oriented back bar, and can help the group quite a bit to speed things along. You can still run SPC and let your HoTs keep the buff running, then deal damage on your DW bar and use Cauterize for burst healing when it's needed. For this, I urge you to use Burning Embers on the same bar so that you have a means of healing yourself without bar-swapping.

If you are only interested in self-healing as a Dragonknight, I highly recommend playing with Burning Embers and also Inhale and its morphs. They are self-healing through damage. My healer even uses Inhale, it keeps her alive if surrounded (even if the enemies haven't finished loading yet), and it's a decent AoE.
