Because there is in game bugs that are game breaking they have to fix. Like not being able to Group bug, other bugs and also preformance issues possibly memory leaks. Basically its to fix a bunch of things. I think that are glitched. Possibly another patch.

Those have been in console since Thieves Guild :(

I also experienced the groupbug yesterday, i got into a group but no others were able to join it and such. Also i couldn't chat within the group.

I don't care how long the mainetenance last as long as that gets fixed. :)

Every time someone complains about maintenance, they'll do more maintenance.

We are currently up to 6 days a week of maintenance.

Don't complain. Maybe they will fix something :)

have you seen them fix anything this past year? beacuse if yes, I must have been missing... I just see more issues with each patch, and now with the smallest patch possible the game completely fried.

During that time I've only encountered one bug, a quest couldn't be completed. I found a live topic about it on the forums including an acknowledgement of it together with confirmation that they were working on a fix. The following week's incremental patch included the fix and I completed the quest.

So yes, they have fixed things this past year!

As irritating as maintenance may be at least they are attending to the bugs that they introduced that are making it impossible to play the game.

If zenni fix bugs you moan, if they dont fix bugs you moan, what do you want them to do?

Why do they use the word "mandatory", has a law been issued by state/national/international authorities requiring this work to be carried out?

Or do they just mean "necessary" work, rather than "mandatory"?

Mandatory doesn't mean legal. Mandatory in thier case means it needs doing other wise the game grinds to a halt. Think of it like a pc disc clean up / defrag but on a huge scale. A small patch is being snuck into it as well.

No, the UK English definition of the term "mandatory" means something that is demanded by law. It may mean something different in the US, but given that we are an international community, picking a different word to use would be better. "Necessary" or "Essential" would be better choices.

It could be mandatory in order to fulfil some conditions in the hardware warranty...

(It could be, but I doubt it)

Use the bug reports sent in on the PTS for something other than toilet paper. Things are reported on the PTS, make it to live and create a playtime impact.

In the UK, "mandatory" would mean that it is compliance with legal requirements, and updating operations so that they are lawful, that is the cause of the work.

Not really. While the term is often used in the UK in relation to a leqal requirement, that isn't its only application. It simply relates to something that is compulsory or required in some way. For example, if you wish to post on this forum then compliance with the forum rules is mandatory. It isn't optional or negotiable, it is required. However, it is not a requirement that is laid down in law. In the case of maintenance, it might be mandatory because of a legal requirement (for example under data protection laws or simply through the contract with the server hosts or the company's ISP), or it could be mandatory because it is required to keep the game running properly and not doing the maintenance simply isn't an option. In short, it is required.

Apart from all that, it's doubtless the case that the maintenance is essential for whatever reason and questioning the strict correctness of the terminology used by a Community Manager in explaining the reason for it on a forum announcement is nit-picking to say the least  !

I'm scratching my head.. maintenance is a must, and ZOS has even moved the times much earlier, yet there are still some people complaining that there is maintenance going on. Heck, it's already completed now. Thank you ZOS for moving the times much earlier to the left. Now, just if you guys could do something about the follow-on issues (i.e. more lags and action/attacks not working when pressed, thrown in loading screens and falling off the map without parachute., etc..) that seem to plaque the many hours following completion of this weekly maintenance. Haven't logged on today yet, but these issues seem to go on for the following day, if not also 2 days later. *sigh*

I guess I'm missing how the earlier is better and not not worse. I got home after a long day of work and didn't even get to finish my writs before the server shut down. I was looking forward all day to having a little fun, and I didn't even get to anything that's actually enjoyable.
