Uh-oh. I'll try to be as brief as I can.

Live in Dominion Territory but do not participate on the war:

Orc, Durza gra-Maghul: Born in the the Morkul Clan, became Forge-Wife of a chief of a minor clan. Lost her child on a skirmish with Breton invaders. Refused to stay in her Stronghold when the Daggerfall Covenant was formed. Went to the Dominion because she knew the High Elves appreciate good craftsmanship, and had no problem working at the forge in Skywatch. She is a Blacksmith, not a soldier.

Dunmer, Liliel: Born in Morrowind, from a house Dunmer mother and an Altmer father. After her mother died in an accident, her father decided to go back to Auridon and took Liliel with him. She was very young and remembers very little of Morrowind. When the Dominion was formed, she was already living there for a few years. She is still young, but she is learning to be a good Pyromancer under the orientation of Aerindel, my Altmer.

Argonian, Sings-Many-Songs: Born a slave of House Dres. Brought together in an expedition to Reaper's March where her slavers intended to capture some Khajiit slaves. Some Khajiit fought back, she saw an opportunity and ran away without looking back. She ended up staying in the Dominion.

Imperial, Ellaria Valerius: Was a Priestess of the Nine in Bravil until the Imperial Army attacked the town. She ran to the nearest town, which was Arenthia, in the Reaper's March. Like the others, she does not partake on the war, she just lives in Arenthia and works at the Cathedral. She is, however, grateful to the Dominion for freeing Arenthia from the Dark Mane and for pursuing the people that destroyed Bravil.

Nord, Gyda Snowcaller: Gyda has great affinity for the arcane, and she joined the Mages Guild to try to improve as a mage. Born in Bruma, north of Cyrodiil, she never set foot in Skyrim, although she would like to visit someday. She favors Ice Magic, and is currently living in Skywatch because, like Liliel, she is one of Aerindel's students.

Live in Cyrodiil, do not care about the war and were only made in the Dominion because we can't make a factionless character:

Breton, Beatrice Leoriane: An arrogant and prideful scion of Lamae Bal who despises the vampires who she sees as being of "lower bloodlines". Perceives herself as a member of the nobility for having the blood of Lamae Bal. Was born in Rivenspire but left for Cyrodiil many decades ago.

Redguard, Sahima: Unlike Beatrice, Sahima actually is highborn. Born in Sentinel, she developed a liking for the arts. She currently lives in Cyrodiil, but travels around Tamriel with a group of performers, most of them bards and dancers.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I have two nord NB. Why Nord's? Because I'm always a Nord in Elder Scrolls Games. And Typically play a stealthy/hunter/ woodsman type Nord.
My Main is in the EP. And my second was created so that I could PVE with one buddy who joined the AD. My little back story for my AD Nord is that he is undercover in the AD. His mission is to get as close to the Queen as possible gain her trust and lead the AD to their doom.. And relay info back to the EP.

One of my characters is an Imperial (a bit of a grey area in terms of faction placement).

He joins the Aldmeri Dominion because of the general dislike of Daedra that Altmer hold, ironically, this Imperial is a follower of Meridia.

Eventually, he ends up marrying an Altmer, and they leave Summerset...but that's a whole other story...coming soon to a Fiction and Roleplaying forum near you...very soon.

    FULL ROLEPLAY MODE!

Breton Wizard (Nightblade) in Ebonheart Pact:

Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down. And I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Windhelm.

In west Daggerfall, born and raised. On the playground was where I spent most of my days. Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool and all shooting some b-ball outside of the school. When a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared.
She said, "You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Windhelm."

I begged and pleaded with her day after day, but she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way. She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket. I put my Wiza-hat on and said, "I might as well kick it."

First class, yo, this is bad. Drinking orange mead out of a champagne glass. Is this what the people of Windhelm living like. Hmm, this might be alright.

But wait I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that. Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat?
I don't think so. I'll see when I get there. I hope they're prepared for the prince of Windhelm.

Well, the Netch landed and when I came out. There was a dude who looked like a guard standing there with my name out.
I ain't trying to get arrested yet. I just got here.
I sprang with the quickness like lightning, disappeared.

I whistled for a horse and when it came near.
The saddle plate said "Fresh" and it had dice in the mirror.
If anything I could say that this horse was rare.
But I thought, "Nah, forget it."
    – "Yo, home to Windhelm."

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8.
And I yelled to the horsie, "Yo home smell ya later." I looked at my kingdom. I was finally there.
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Windhelm.

Orc battlemage in EP (sorcerer). He's a native of the Sheogorad region. Assisting the Pact is really just a means to gain prestige. If he can prove the worth of his people to the Pact that's valuable, but doubts this will happen and knows they'll persevere either way. He does enjoy working with Nords, whom he admires even though he and his people have often competed against them.

Dunmeri Pyromancer (Dragon Knight) on the AD because he scorns both the Tribunal and the "Good" Daedra, thus he's lived in Summerset most of his adult life. He's an incredibly gifted mage, so he's been generally accepted in the upper echelons of scholastic society.

Khajiiti Nightblade on the Pact, roleplaying as an underground agent working against slavery in all cases.

I have an AD Dunmer. She's descended from Ashlanders, so she considers the Tribunal murderers and gross heretics. Once the Dunmer formed an alliance with their hated enemies, the brutish Nords, and with their own slaves, the savage Argonians, she could no tolerate living in a Dunmer society that abandoned its rightful superiority.

The Altmer are the only race that are near-equals to Dunmer. Though they too have formed alliances with lesser races, it's clear that the Altmer are the ones in charge and are bending the other races to be more like them. She thought the Veiled Heritance made some good points, though she would rather be benevolent rulers of the lesser races than hateful oppressors and isolationists. Ultimately, however, the Heritance was a lie, a front for usurpers to seek personal power, and that dishonesty she could not abide.

I also have an Argonian in the DC. I don't really have a good reason other than that's where he landed.

I have two characters I play, but neither are particularly interested in the prevalent faction of their starting geographical area.

fey-vetha'a is my elderly Khajiit. A humble trader, clothier and wandering romantic who enjoys simple comforts, good conversation and smoked fish. She's not a fighter, but can still look after herself. She doesn't want to take sides in the war, partly because she is too old for such nonsense, and partly because the years spent travelling across southern Tamriel has brought her into contact with many fascinating characters from different races and has developed an appreciation of different cultures. She hates no race, but will protect her own. She worships Jone and Jode privately.

Menedhyn Bek is another elderly character. A weak, sometimes sickly Breton who mixes herbs and poultices, has a fascination with runes and has a deep spiritual connection with nature. Born a peasant in Wrothgar, he has maintained the simple, modest way of life and has no desire to become famous, wealthy or important in the eyes of others. He cares not for fighting, preferring the company of animals to men or mer. Has a genuine dislike for the pompous, pretentious nonsense that, in his eyes, accompanies the nobles and desperate-to-be-noticed of elements of High Rock society

If I could have chosen not to align my character with a faction at the creation screen, I most certainly would have. I opted for AD for my Khajiit because I wanted to place her in or around Khenarthi's Roost at the start. For my Breton, I chose DC as I wanted him to wander across High Rock early on as part of a peregrination of sorts. I much prefer to play atypical characters in games.

For my redguard stam sorc, the village he was born in was attacked by group of Local Bandits. His parents died defending the town and a group of khajiit mercenary and merchants passed through and found him as one of the survivors who was left within the ashes of the town. He was taken to elsweyr and given the name Zebendal. He was to serve the aldmeri dominion eventually when the city he was raised in saw its city burned and its khajiit population either slaughtered and taken into servitude by dunmeri slavers and has developed a special hate for them.

My dunmeri sorcerer was a daughter of a wealthy lesser house that was known locally within vvendenfell for its Mercenaries and it being a source of fine weapons. A rival house knew of many of the houses members had a dislike of the tribunal and so used that to their advantage to take them out of business and accused them of plotting against the tribunal. Without questions asked, the house her character belonged to was mostly wiped out with the few surviving members fleeing and joining many organizations such as the db or integrating themselves into the other factions territories as renowned mercenaries, blacksmiths, etc. My dunmeri pyromancer or dragon knight found refuge within the territory of the Aldmeri Dominion who gladly took her in as she was skilled in fighting and due to her houses former status, had a lot of information on the pact's opporations.

All of my characters are in DC. My main is an Imperial who defected to the Daggerfall Covenant. During his travels he met other citizens of Tamriel who have joined him on his journey.

During his journey through Cyrodiil he had met an Imperial soldier who he eventually fell in love with and married when she returned to Wayrest with him. They plan to move to that big house in Glenumbra next spring.(Characters based off of me and my fiance)
A Bosmer on the run in Grahtwood who he rescued after she violated the Green Pact.
A Nord outcast he had joined in Windhelm to finish a job.
An Altmer who he met in Skywatch wanted to travel beyond the borders of the Aldmeri Dominion.
In Deshaan he met a Dunmer who was sick of her daily life in Mournhold and sought adventure.

He continues to travel Tamriel finding new adventures and new friends along the way.

What lore reason did you give your character for being in your current faction?

Does your character still have your races beliefs? Khajiit believing in jone n jode while in ep, dc, etc

    Mercenary?

Some races are easier to explain like argonians not wanting to fight with their former master which will enslave them anyways after the three banner war ends.

Some races like altmer, who are into racial pride, or dunmer, who are more into their own culture, seem to be harder to explain.

this one is khajiit, this one is part of the Daggerfall Covenant, when the village was raided by bad cultist, this one fled away and never looked back. this one was strong and survived, this one found breton friends and stayed with them. this one is happy there.

This one wonders if the khajiit in the covenant have perfecting a unique flavor of skoomaa?

My two have a long and complicated history but the short version is:

Branwen: she is a Breton fighting for the Pact. She was in love with an Altmer when they both lived in Daggerfall. He was sent away to Auridon when the war broke out and is assumed dead. Her life was threatened too due to her love for the Altmer by both DC and AD. So she ran away and hopped a boat for Stonefalls.

Umbra: Also a Breton fighting for the Pact. She was born into a wealthy family in DC. She was a bit of a Tomboy, to her mother's dismay, and spent a lot of time sneaking out at night to meet with a group of friends. Her father was fine with how she was and even taught her how to fight at a young age.

One night after sneaking out she returns home to find her home ransacked, her parents killed. Orcs. She runs back to warn her friends (only Plays-In-Puddles is there). She warns her Argonian friend that it's too dangerous to stay and they both catch a boat to Plays-In-Puddles safe haven in Stonefalls.

She later falls in love with a Nord in the Fighter's Guild.

Again, that's the short version xD

Argonian wizard in DC (nightblade). He's not terribly factional, and just happened to be studying in High Rock. Given his specialization in ice magic and interest in the Dwemer, he has a lot of reason to return to the Pact, but is skeptical it will last and doesn't want to be around when it collapses.

Argonian archer in AD (templar). She's an active supporter, and traveled here because they appeared to be treating the Khajiit well, but also to investigate how true this was. As a worshiper of Mephala she has an active interest in learning about all three political groups.

Orc battlemage in EP (sorcerer). He's a native of the Sheogorad region. Assisting the Pact is really just a means to gain prestige. He does enjoy working with Nords, whom he admires even though he and his people have often competed against them.

Nord spellsword in AD (templar). A devotee of sun magic, he headed to more tropical climes - and also to learn from the Altmer. I actually haven't played this character much.

Altmer warrior in EP (nightblade). While largely apolitical, she is a supporter of unity, particularly among elves. She's my newest character and hasn't done much yet.

All mine are in EP except for one which is a AD Bosmer. I'll only do the ones I've bothered to max out though.

Breton NIghtblade: Wanted to study under the Telvanni but was denied because he wasn't a Dark Elf. Decided that self study was a better idea but occasionally assisted the Mages Guild and the wizards of Shad Astula. Eventually turned to necromancy and daedra worship after going through the Crypt of Hearts one too many times.

Altmer Templar: Left his home on the Summerset Isles to travel around the world. After years of doing just that he decided to settle in a nice position at the Mages Guild in Windhelm as a healing instructor but his work still requires him to venture out.

Khajiit Stamsorc: Daughter of my old Khajiit stam sorc I had on DC. After hearing the exploits of her father and how he traveled the world perfecting the art of lightning paws, she went on her own adventure. She inherited her father's mastery of lightning magick but perfected it for her own use. (An excuse to differentiate the fact that my old Khajiit stam sorc used the old stamina morph of Lightning Form but was deleted before the change while my new one uses Hurrican.)

I have a similar character in mind for the future, but in EP, and with fondness for summoning. He actually started as a character idea for Skyrim but I never got around to him.

And an Altmer for my warrior! Actually not the first Altmer warrior I've played in a TES game. I realized most of my characters were leaning heavily on magic and ranged attacks, and wanted to try something different. I suppose next I need a Dragon Knight. I played several during beta, but for some reason never got around to one after launch (in part because my wife's main is a DK).

My decisions are based on RP rather than mechanics, but the end result in the same. Even if they're a bit strange, they're fun to play :)
    Makkir wrote: »

I've never used shields much on this character. Most of his abilities are offensive (Storm Calling & Dual Wield), while defense is largely left to heavy armor and passives.

He may have a mess of a build, but by level 35 I'd used him to get the Daedric Lord Slayer & Anchor Devastator achievements, albeit with a few tweaks to better facilitate group work. As grindy as that was, anchors were a good way to ease into group content. I'm someone who came to ESO with a strong background in the single player games, and limited MMO experience. Eventually I'll have to take him to Cyrodiil to go after the last big Dark Anchor achievement, but lately I've been playing my newer characters more.

The race restriction is lore breaking. Never in any TES game have races been restricted from being in the province, so it would logical that there would be people of all races in all factions.

Quite the contrary, the race restrictions help to encourage adherence to lore. There's no flat restriction saying you can't wander anywhere you want on Tamriel, but the vast majority of the people you meet in those provinces will be native to their own. Demographically this runs around 75-80% of the population.

The any race option is restricted, to encourage players towards the normal population distributions in the alliances.

    I love this question.

I think of my main as a halfling- Altmer mother had a one-night stand with a traveling Nord and 9 months later had to smuggle a pale baby out of Grahtwood or be disowned by her family. The Nord's family were none too happy to see me, either- and only let me live because an Argonian house maid took pity on me and raised me with her own brood. That's how I became an Altmer healer for EP.

I wish halflings were really a thing in this game.
