Imho it is kind of disappointing and rather lazy that it is all through the cash shop.
I feel as if adding a specific building in the city's/capitals in various areas would be more cool and immersive essentially I was imagining it to be like WoW's. Or you could find new styles and such through exploration and as reward for achievments like you do with dyes. I feel as if it would be a good addition on top of the personality's that came with DB
However with that being said I do not mind the currency for customizing your character being crown points at least for like facial re-sculptures and such. Maybe real cash for a recolor is a bit much though.
However taking a positive stance on the topic at least we'll have the option now to mix things up a bit even if it is a bit of a lazy implementation.

I may be incorrect but didn't skyrim have a barbershop where you could walk up to a guy and get your haircut and stuff? It's been a while since I played skyrim. But i know games like LOTRO and such had an in-game barbershop that was quite nifty. Fallout usually has an in-game barbershop. It just seems to me like it would be a fantastic use of some of the empty buildings, but it appears they have again taken the lazy way to do things.

It would have been quite simple. You walk into a barbershop. You're prompted to either do a simple cosmetic change for gold or the guy says they can do something more fancy, but it will cost you. You can then use your crown token or whatever it is to change. Then in a city like Mournhold or Wayrest, there could be a plastic surgeon or something crazy like that where you did race change and major changes.

Exactly this and the only way to slow its progress is don't purchase anything you feel is priced unjustly . If they don't get a lot of income from this , they will change things to retarget the market with specials . You have to change your spending habits if you don't agree . They won't go broke or just stop adding features trust me lol

If you were expecting a company operating in this day and age of gaming to not capitalize on every single aspect of the game..You should probably think about getting a new hobby.

For years now Bethesda has been looking for a means to break into the Mod Community and take advantage of it financially. And they finally did so this year with the Season Pass and numerous "DLCs" that basically did what the Mod Community does for these games. Why are you surprised ZOS, a company under the Zenimax Media Inc Umbrella wouldnt be doing the same here?

Oh the players want a mechanic in game, that costs money to make....Lets make it a feature that requires them to spend money every time they approach it. - Every game company under the Sun today.

On a side note, remember when people absolutely freaked out about Bethesda charging $2.50 for horse armor in Oblivion? What changed between then and now that led to us to be willing to spend upwards of $40 for the same stuff?

Making money off people's indecisiveness combined with the impulsive nature of online purchases. LOL. They won't get any money from me, but I'm sure they will make bank from a lot of other players.

That's not even the biggest problem, IMO. You can create a character you think looks great, you click "Finish" in the creator, head to the tutorial, and get very, very unsatisfied in a hurry. Characters can look very different in the creator versus the game world.

I would bet the line of players who had this happen to them would stretch out the figurative door and wind around the block.

If ZOS is going to charge players each and every time they want to update their character appearance, they better make sure any previews they have available actually reflect how the characters will look in the game.

Sadly, I have lost confidence in their ability to do that. The prices they charge for mounts chipped away at it, then the less-than-specific way they advertised the assistants almost destroyed it. There's a little bit of confidence left. But it's swindling fast. I am lucky I don't PVP much, or it'd be completely gone.

I need to see more before I decide, but it it truly is crowns for each appearance change, even if the changes only use what is available in the base game character creator, I just can't bring myself to sub or purchase any more DLC.

The only way I could have mentally justified for myself their decision to require crowns would be if they needed to pay for the development to add the new feature to the game world - new buildings, NPCs, alter the maps, etc.. Since they are not even doing that, well, I would have a hard time spending cash on this feature.

The dye station is from "before"... back when they were thinking they would be a AAA subscription game and the Powers That Be were OK with in-game immersive content instead of cheaper menu driven systems.

I actually think they were pretty delusional to think the game could continue to be sub-only, if that is what they really believed. Many of the games currently on the market were already switching to cash shop / hybrid models. You would have a hard time convincing me that was just because they could. I tend to believe it was because subscriptions were not generating as much revenue as they needed to maintain support and add new features. Given the choice of maintaining a sub or not playing the game, a lot more players are choosing to just not play.

I just don't believe that the number of gamers willing to subscribe can support a game this size. People in general expect a lot now for very little contribution. Example: I demand I do not see one single pop up add in this website I view every day and never contribute a single dime to! Another good one: I can't believe they make me click a single button to close that crown store preview window! The horror! I already bought my game!

I should clarify that I don't necessarily disagree with your point, nor am I attacking it. They certainly do seem to be taking the easy way out with some current features. However, I see a lot of players on the forums blaming the B2P model for this. Maybe that's true, but I don't think an MMO can survive these days without a B2P or F2P model, unless it is pretty small.

I do not think that B2P is a constraint. I actually think they are paying the bills.

Business model aside, the main problem that ZOS has is what I think of as a company motto of "good enough". What they think of as "good enough" is often viewed by customers as "incomplete" (at best) or "completely broken" (at worst). They are constantly fighting negative customer perceptions, and their inability to talk about it is just fuel on the fire. ZOS goes forward with the idea that they can always swing back around and finish it later, but it takes them too long to get back to stuff.

Why is this? Honestly, I think they have bigger ideas than they can implement with the size of the studio that they have allocated to the game. They don't have time or resources to be "excellent" right now.

Yes, there are some great things in ESO, most of which were created before launch. Certain zones, the art, writing, and audio (when it works) are very good. They have a terrible infestation of "average" everywhere else, and in some places, that is putting it nicely to avoid being too negative.

Edit: I do like the art, zone design, much of the writing, and the audio. I like the game, overall. I am saddened when I write stuff like this mostly because they could have done better in so many places. A lot better. Fortunately, for ESO, I doubt that the majority of players notice this stuff.

I think what happened was. They were working on an immersive way for the barber shop to be in game but they scraped it and threw out this rushed version of it.

    Crown Store Barbershop?! Preposterous, ZO$!

Although this is not the case (learn to read before comment, please), this is one step closer to P2W

And what are people paying to get that will in any way help them win with a barber shop? Now if I can buy a mean beard that shoots 20k damage arrows out of it then I will agree it is pay 2 win. But when it is all either cosmetic or obtainable without paying then it is not pay to win

He did not say it was P2W but getting closer to it. One thing leads to another and eventually you can buy monster helms/shoulders with crowns. Or weapons, or anything else. Maybe even lead to buying gold or CPs with crowns. ugh

I'll be honest, this is lazy yet expected on Zenimax's part. HOWEVER... I won't complain about it if they add in at the very least additional hair colors for the races - the hair colors that are left out for some races, reds for Imperials, my DARK BROWN as well as BLACK for Altmer, and anything else that's missing. Those examples are present in NPCS of the Imperial and Altmer race - yet are missing for characters. It's not like it'd be a problem to add in those additional hair color options for the various races that are both lore-friendly and already exist in this game for NPCs.

If anything, this would get them more money if they added in those additional hair colors - maybe even more if they added in some more skin tones for races like the Imperials, Bretons, Orcs, you name it - so long as those are still in the lore-friendly range (NO HOT PINK ORCS WITH RAINBOW HAIR).
