Other than a new skill line I like the idea. If a laborer is maxed in all three of those area's they should be able to make the siege weapons as well.
It's doubtful that Zenimax would take this route tho as it would eliminate the need to buy them from Cyro Vendors as an AP sink.
Now if they added in new types of siege not available in those vendors, then that would be pretty cool.

Then they can just go to the siege merchant and buy it like always.
Don't underestimate crafting, especially in PvP. I'm yet to meet a PvP player who doesn't craft for the benefit of PvP (be it potions, glyphs, new gear) siege weapons would be no exception, if it provides bonuses to killing players, people will jump at the bit to make it, trust me.
It's definitely more enticing than grinding dungeons for gear and monster sets.

I really like this idea.

You bring up some valid points.
I see what you mean by AP sink but with Impenetrable pieces being sold on the weekends now, people will definitely being going through it much quicker.
Maybe sell the certain types of equipment needed to craft the weapons.
I also feel that they should vary in the amount of damage they deal, giving more incentive to craft/buy these weapons.

That's only a couple hundred k AP though. Some people are earning that in a day. If the items weren't all BoP then more people would buy more than one of it.
What we really need are other siege equipment that could be made by crafters. Like siege towers, ladders or other things like that. If we could create a siege tower/ladder that would let a couple people onto a wall to disrupt the defense of the keep it would add a new dynamic to these fights. Then maybe people wouldn't be so keen to use the gap closer exploits. When enemies get into a keep that's being sieged, it really disrupts the defense of it and make it a much more challenging fight. People shouldn't be able to fly up to where your at but they should be able get there via ladder or siege tower. These would require people to move them to the wall the same as a ram. A siege tower would require 6 people to move it and a ladder 2-4. There could be 2 lengths of ladders also, one for outer keep walls and one for outposts.
@ZOS_BrianWheeler is there any chance that we will be getting these kinds of things in the future?
