It's an interesting point to raise about conduct (for want of a better word) when there are two of you arriving at a chest, node or whatever at the same time. I play slowly and almost always at walking pace. If someone gets there just before me, which is often the case, then so be it. Occasionally I leave it for others if I get there first. That's my choice. Sometimes I get a thumbs up, sometimes I don't. I'm all for little and random acts of generosity like that, whether they are reciprocated or not.
If I see people in combat, I only jump in if I see they have low health or just got stunned
Aye, i've had the benefit of more experienced players helping me out like this on a few occasions before. I'm always extremely grateful for the help!

While I agree in most with you, in some situations I'm uncertain, since I also not always need/want help from others, even when facing an obvious death.
Considering that helping others in fights may spoil their challenge, if they treat it as a challenge but did not inform anyone about it (who does), like to complete some boss alone even if it means they will die.
But this way they can learn how to use proper abilities for the 2-nd or 3-rd time, to improve the fighting skills.
Sometimes the efforts we make alone to achieve an ultimate goal give much more fun than when we get help from 3-rd party.
So it's not that obvious to help others even if they are on low health.
Our kindness may not always bring their satisfaction, if it was a challenge we didn't know.

If they ask for help - that is a different story, I'll never refuse a request. But then - there is a chat/whisper :).

The free weekend was a good time to be a newbie in Tamriel - I think there were quite a few of us giving gear and gold to them as they came out of their starting locations.

I don't think that this is helpful - I made the experience in other games, that helping them with items is spoiling them and they will never really get into the game. It is better to give some advice, than actual items, money and gear.

I've given away mats before and told them they get crafting XP by refining them. I only craft items if the player supplies the mats, but do it for free. I'm not handing top gear to new players, but do give them a push in the right direction.

I think it is better to let them look for these mats by themselves maybe give advice where is a good location to do that. This way they get the impression "oh, I am perfectly capable to do that on my own, I do not need help from others to achieve this" - and that makes them stronger in their mind set. Whilst providing them with mats, is not giving them this experience.

That wasn't possible during the free weekend due to the restrictions placed on the people who were there for free (restrictions put in place to avoid spammers & trolls taking advantage of being able to come into our playground for free). They couldn't communicate with other players.

This is not an FBI training camp, how difficult can it be to get by and eventually thrive in an MMO like this? I'm just saying this cos you think we need to get new players stronger in their mind sets ... how strong do you need to be to play a game like this?

Anyway, end of the derail, I totally agree with the OP, if we contribute towards people having fun in a friendly gaming environment I believe we'll be also reaping the benefits ourselves. BE NICE! o:)

if your answer is no then we dont got a deal.

I find that when I play in a more generous frame of mind, I enjoy the game more. So for me it's win-win.

For me as a new player, the advice didn't make much sense, as I didn't have a context for it yet (really really didn't as this is my first MMORPG). Items; my gosh I still have on my friends list a notation about a person who for no reason shared blue foods with my character and gave me some recipes. It was such a nice feeling to meet with that kind welcome.

OTOH I've offered stuff and had it declined....whatever works.

Ah, I see, I came to ESO at that weekend, but I immediately bought the game as well, so I could interact with others. ZOS should do that again, a lot of people do not want to buy into an online game, without the ability to try it before they buy it.

Damn I feel like the ESO forums are 1000x better than all the other gaming sites I visit each day. I have 4 monitors on my desk at work (Graphic Design). Three for actual work and the other for surfing the web. In the morning I visit the same 4-5 gaming sites everyday & scan or read the article's until I catch up to where I left off the day before. Reading the comment section on sites like N4g, Ign & Gamespot makes me a little depressed angry because its full of nothing but judgmental hate towards gamers from other gamers. I save the Eso forums for later because its friendly , chill & relaxed. There are actual discussion and people joking with each other. Just go visit the comment section in any other gaming site , then come back here. You'll feel better about this comment section. Hahahaha.

I disagree I think you should be correct and decent with each other. For example I randomly picked up a player in cyrodiil despite the player having over 300 cp this individual was tactically flawed! I informed them and offered some advice. They immediately lost all emotional stability and said "I have a F****** life! Not like you" after this i will no longer be kind nor "excellent" with them. I will tell it like it is in a correct way without vulgar insults and since offense is subjective I couldn't care less if your offended or if your feeling are hurt. I'm speaking generally of course not to anyone specific person.

Also how about instead of asking others to be kind, generous or "excellent" it might be more beneficial to accept the reality that some people are nice and some are not. When I'm farming for kutas! I will race and if it were possible I'd knock over any player to get to that runestone! I do this because I don't like setting myself up for disappointment or failure, plus I'm playing a game and games are competitive and that's ok. Sure I could walk casually to each runestone and hope another player will notice what I'm doing and kindly allow me to take that node. I think I would be disappointed quite often.
