I hate to tell you this, @UrQuan, but Japan just called me and said they were getting a server. So there's proof. They called me on my personal mobile. They also told me to keep it secret and they were having Bigfoot over for tea.

Also, that screenshot should be removed, OP. It even tells you in ticket!

That doesn't say anything about there being a separate Japanese server, just that the DMM-branded release of ESO won't be available outside Japan. We all just jumped to a conclusion that was never actually officially stated.
Also "our online game"? Someone may want to tell DMM that the game is not theirs... That's copyright infringement.

That's a big difference. Just because some players made assumptions, that doesn't mean the people pointing out now that there was never anything official about a Japanese server are "backpedalling" as you put it. Go back and look at which players assumed that there would be a Japanese server. Do you see any of those players posting in this thread saying there was never going to be one?

What I'm seeing is a whole lot of after the fact "Oh we always knew there wasn't going to be a Japanese server" when there was nary a contradictory peep from these same people when everyone was hyped up about the idea.

I didn't see anyone hyped up about the idea, and I didn't see any evidence that it was ever on the cards. In fact this is the first I've heard of it. If I'd seen anyone hyped up about it, I might have said "hold on, I don't recall seeing an official announcement about that", but I haven't seen anything about it at all until this thread (which probably means it wasn't ever a thing, because I do read all the news and announcements on the official site).

This is such a great shame. I live in Japan and haven't played in almost 7 months, purely due to PVP Lag...

A bunch of my guildies and new friends were all planning a comeback when the presumed JPN Server dropped this week.

I have 3 end game characters on NA server, but was happy to re-roll on the fresh server just for the sake of enjoyable PVP.

I guess we won't be joining now. Love this game, but PVP with 300 ping is just not cool. lol

On the DMM website FAQ they say (roughly translated by Google), "[2] Please tell us about the Elder Scroll's online Japanese version of the server environment?

Game server is the same server environment as the English version of The Elder Scrolls Online.
It is scheduled to enjoy the game play in the same environment as the current version."

"[3] English version of The Elder Scrolls Online account, can I take over the character data?

Excuse me, regarding the data migration from the English version of The Elder Scrolls Online,

Where? Show me where it was confirmed? They confirmed Japanese localisation (text and audio translation) a while back, but I never saw anything about a server.

Already saw some japanese guild spam (I believe) in Stormhaven earlier tonight. Idk if it was real or troll the message was filled with kanjis and such and ended with "you can also english all you want" lol

I think it's going to be harder on the NA server because the default response there seems to be to chastise anyone who doesn't speak in English (I've seen some quite obnoxious reactions when French-speaking Quebec guilds use zone chat to recruit, it's as if a lot of people in the US don't realise that there are people who speak other languages on their continent). On the EU server we already have multiple languages and don't view the server as being English-speaking only, or "belonging" to people who speak English as their first/main language.

It says it's going to be on the same server environment. You are getting localisation (ie. translation, subs, audio and UI in Japanese) confused with having a Japanese server. That doesn't say there will be a Japanese Server, that says they will be on the existing servers.

(I do feel bad for you that you interpreted as having a Japanese server and therefore got your hopes up, but that is not what is said there).

No, that's definitely not what that says. "Elder Scroll's online Japanese version" is the Japanese client. That's the new client that's for Japan and has all of the dialogue etc. in Japanese. It's not a server. The FAQ doesn't say or imply that it is.

No, that's definitely not what that says. That explicitly tells you that it will be the same server as the English client uses. It explicitly tells you it's the same server environment. Not that it is the same release version as the server the English client uses. It's the same server environment. I don't know how they could be any more clear that there's no Japanese server.

How? They're talking about whether you get a discount buying the Japanese client if you have already bought the English client. Nothing in that has anything even remotely to do with a server.

That wouldn't have happened anyway. Transmission from Australia to Japan (assuming you are an Aussie since 270 ping is standard for us) is worse than Aus to US.

Also, even if there was a Japanese server there would be no way anyone outside of Japan would be able to connect to it as it goes through DMM. DDM has a habit of locking down servers so that foreigners can't access them even through proxies.

Because it's a version of the game translated into Japanese, with Japanese voiceovers, UI, and text - just like someone in France may have bought a French language version of the game, or someone in Germany may have bought a German language version of the game rather than the English version. It's really not that hard to understand.
