How doyou activate a familiar's special ability?

Each of the sorcerer's pets that can be summoned has a special morphed ability. How do you activate that ability after you have summoned the creature.

I believe it has to reach rank IV, and morph in order to use special abilities. That said, all you have to do is press the key that summoned them to begin with.
