I have to say, I'm surprised it's so low!

I thought they would of sold more copies as it's across 3 platforms.

Would of been interesting to see how many actually still play!
Its probably around 100,000 players lol

I'm thinking thats a little high!

It could be as low as 50,000 players and it would still be more people playing with you than most MMOs that have their populations spread across hundreds of servers. That's the cool thing about megaservers; just look at EVE Online, a tiny population (when compared to games like WoW and such) but you'll see no place more crowded than Jita in any other MMO.

seems unlikely its active players. more people play skyrim than play ESO:TU
I know lots bought the game not via steam but, yeah 7million players i think is ever

I can agree with the Forbes assessment of poor marketing. I was already playing Skyrim and looking at related sites and forums and I just stumbled across the existence of ESO. I would have liked to have been in from launch but I did not know it existed.

Many players have 2 or more accounts. I'm one of those. So 7 million accounts sure ain't 7 million humans.

Not sure why anyone would want a 2nd account (besides more character slots, or different platforms ? ) but no matter what your reasons are, I am ready to bet that this is negligibly marginal.

Besides... for ZOS financially, it doesn't matter if accounts are owned by different people, or by the same people.
It does matter when it comes to ingame population (you can't possibly play on two systems AT ONCE) but again, I bet this is completely marginal. Not "many players".

I have multiple accounts, too. I can log into more than one at the same time using two computers that are next to each other, but it is not possible for me to do anything interesting with them simultaneously. I use them simultaneously for testing addons, mine and others, and generally seeing how multiplayer parts of the game work, story oriented screen shots, and stuff like that, so it is acceptable for one to be standing there playing the lute while I do something on the other. Outside of that, they are independent accounts that are 'friends'.

I have an account that was transfered over to PS4 and I play both PC and PS4 on that account. I wonder if that counted twice.

Consoles represent a second purchase so don't see why they wouldn't count that separately.

Your console copy of the game, however, is linked with your already existing account. Unless you want to make things more difficult and use another email address for a new account. I guess the 7M is accounts only, and some of them may have copies for several platforms.

Most players only have one account.
In most cases there is no need for 2nd account.

As per the 7 million players, probably only 20% to 30% of them still play.
ESO population is much larger than last year.
    Each DLC attracts more customers.
Dark Brotherhood DLC will probably mark a new record in their DLC sales on all platforms.
The veteran ranks have been removed and many bugs been fixed.
But this is just a mere estimation and I have no proof or official information.
Some videos I recorded for fun: Main character:
PC EU main: Universe - AD magicka Sorcerer, Former Emperor, Grand Overlord, The Merciless, Trial Bosses Solo Champion
Top alts: Genius(stamina/sagicka Dragonknight) The Force(stamina Nightblade) and other chars.
PC NA main: The Magic - AD magicka Sorcerer
Started playing ESO in beta & early access

At one time WoW claimed to have had 10-12 million players playing their game. 7 million is impressive for an MMO and once it launches in Japan that number can only go up.

10-12 million playing is different to 7 million sold copies.

just for reference, I believe GTA V is up to 60 million sold across platforms.

ESO was (is) plagued by bugs and incomplete QoL features, had the game not had the issues it had it would have done much better. The game is still damaged by the early reviews, which are not improved by anyone joining the game now and experiencing the Bugs and Lag still in the game. The sad fact is ESO was a lost opportunity to make something amazing, anyone who plays says it's the most immersive combat system in a MMO, sadly the lag and bugs destroy the overall experience.

Yes. And I don't understand why.

Supposedly we enjoy playing this game (else we wouldn't be here) and also enjoy being part of its community (ditto).

Now ZOS comes up with a figure : we're not that naive to take it raw as is, there's PR and such in it, but WHY this burning desire to make it a complete lie, why the wish for the game to fail, why all the doomsaying ? If people think so strongly that ZOS is doing a bad job, not listening to players or doesn't deserve to even have customers, then by all means those people should start with themselves and quit playing. Everyone else should be reasonably happy that the game's doing fine.

Which, by the way, is not even sure. To know if the game's doing fine, we would need more and different figures (actual playtime, new players vs. quitting players, etc... the number of accounts by itself means nothing). And to know if ZOS is doing fine we would need info about their costs and expenses, which we don't have either.

Well, this forum would be rather dull without individuals who interpret 7 million accounts as either the end of the MMO genre or the best game in the universe. I'm neither impressed by the figure nor dissapointed. I'm happy that there finally is a figure.
Maybe there will be a day when active accounts or average players online per quarter will be revealed. Until then I log on whenever I can and see if I have fun or not. Regardless of 6,999,999 others around me or just 6.

I think you're waaaaay off base with that comment.

7 mil accounts means that at least 1/10th has spent money on the game as at least some other transaction. We know this to be true because a few months in PC launch there were that many active subs. Add in console ....

So even if it's less, 1/10th is the number I'm using to represent possible crown, ESO plus purchases. If only 1/10th spent either $15 or did only 1 sub ever.....that's $10.5 mil.

If 7 mil spent $40 on the game that's $280 mil

Not sure how you're calculating but it's pretty clear that they are more than profitable.

Whos making all the DLC? Theres probably staff of 100 still working on the game, average salary probably 2000 per month.

They must be getting close of breaking even, if they can keep this up next couple year, maybe this can turn into profitable product. F2P-switch is also massive money-grab in the future. Some companies have reported of over 600% more profit when they switched to F2P.

Unique accounts created. That would include all of us currently playing on both the NA and EU servers, all of the players who have a second account, and all of those people who got keys to play for free for a week during the Million Dollar Giveaway.

I really would love to see actual units sold versus that 7 Million number based upon their released financials. Anyone want to go dig that up?

Here's the breakdown: since we commercially launched at the end of March 2014, we have had seven million people acquire the game, create accounts and play. Please note that this number does NOT include beta players (who played the game before we launched) and it also does not include players from our free trial.

LOL, from what dark and smelly orifice did you pull that statistic? How could you possibly know how many accounts were sold to bots?

My guild, Bot Counters, carefully traveled the realms of ESO tabulating detailed number and character names. When ZOS finally started banning some bot accounts we also factored that into our carefully maintained database and statistical formulae.

I would share the database but alas the file size is so large that it would go over my allowed upload limit.

Nope, just copies sold, or more likely, accounts created. It doesn't mean 7 million are playing now, but 7 million paying people have logged on on 7 million different accounts since launch, free access (beta, weekends, etc..) not included. Since they're taking into account everyone since launch, of course the figure can only be growing.

I don't know if that's a lot, or not, in the MMO world. I guess it's a lot, otherwise it wouldn't have mentioned it.

I think WoW mentioned about 40million different accounts at one point...

Well 7 million isn't bad. Of course, it has a ways to go before it reaches the more than 100 million unique accounts created to play World of Warcraft (a figure quoted by Blizzard on Battle.net in 2014).

It will most likely never get there - WoW achieved most of that at a time, when there was not that much concurrence in the MMORPG market. But nowadays there are plenty of alternatives and so it is hard for any game to ever reach such numbers again.

I am not a WoW fan, but to be fair to the team that created and marketed WoW - it is not like WoW existed in a world without other MMO's. There were many existing MMO's to play.

WoW brought a new approach to marketing and MMO game crafting. The WoW team also changed how MMO markets were conceptualized and targeted - a market was much larger than previous MMO's had dare dream or attempt to reach.

Instead of further pushing those market boundaries or even be a part of that, the ESO team has been happy to be another relatively niche, PVE oriented, smaller and less visionary MMO. And we cannot say there is anything wrong with that, from a short and mid term business perspective, without access to ZOS's financial information.

But if WoW had never been originally released, and instead had been released at the same time as ESO, there is no doubt that the sales (of the original or a modern version of) WoW would be far far above the sales of ESO. The WoW team would not have aimed for or accepted less.

If WoW had been release at the same time as ESO and the sales of both games were equal the WoW team would have responded with big and quickly implemented changes, fixes and improvements to their game until they achieved what they wanted to do. The ESO team (and probably the financial backers) never had that drive or business model.
