TESO game engine with different genres?

How well could the TESO game engine be applied for other genres (with the proper modifications for each individual genre, of course)?

What brought this question to mind for me was recently remembering the unfortunately cancelled (before it ever hit store shelves) MMO Lost Continents from around 2001-2002, to date the only MMO I'm aware of that was to be themed after the pulp adventure serials of the 1930's/1940's. In fact, the various articles about its development were where I first heard of the then-radical idea of what we now know as instancing.

The TESO game engine would seem to be a total natural if Lost Continents was to be made today. What do you all think, both for pulp adventure and for other genres as well? :)

I don't think anyone wants to perpetuate the total lack of security in this game, do we?

Passwords and Two Factor Emails does not equate to total lack of Security.

If Game of Thrones or Legend of Drizzt makes a game on ESO's engine I would be out so quick.

I wouldn't hold my breath though.

Well, lets get this thread back on topic.....

It might be nice to have other genres in an MMO besides Fantasy Sword, Board and Stick games.

Could the TESO game engine also support a sci-fi MMO, even one that'd include interstellar travel?

The rendering part of the ESO engine would work well for such a game but the client/server (net)code needs to be completely re-written from scratch.

If I would like to see one game that's cancelled to be brought out still, it would be Imperator Online.
    Sadly...
    It vanished...

Ideas around this game were beyond awesome though.

seeing as they own the rights to fallout I don't think a fallout mmo is that out of the question, as currently the actual fallout and TES games share the same engine.

    D&D/AD&D is so... meh...
Being a once hardcore RP'er, I prefered Earthdawn, Warhammer non-40K, and Call of Cthulu.
Now, the last will likely many run away from, it's basically a Create-New-Character RP.

Honestly i don't really like this engine i would prefer something that would allow for cloth physics, proper weather mechanics and more detailed armor, pets and mounts.

You're quite correct. The Hero Engine is substandard. Good thing this game doesn't use Hero Engine.

You are right but you are wrong, the game uses a modified version of the Hero Engine customized by ZoS. I do not know what is exactly stopping the devs from adding cloth physics and detailed not painted on armor but it might be related to engine limitations. It would be nice of the devs said what the engine is capable of because i definitely think better weather and cloth physics would add A LOT to the game.

You think ESO DOESN'T use the HERO engine?
    Laughing-Meme-Gif-13.gif

I mean... come on. We all know it's essentially the Hero engine...

But as for another genre... I dunno. It can't do open world. It can't do underwater. Why would we WANT another game in this "ESHERO" engine?

What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.

No, it couldn't, because it is seriously outdated. After some digging around it seems it doesn't even have a name, but here, take this hilarious section of an interview with ESO developer I found online:
Q: Can your tech do anything that you think is important that gamers haven’t seen in any current MMOs?

A: We’re not talking about some of our advanced features yet, which will definitely distance ESO from the competition, especially some of the social features we’re building into our server.

I think it definitely distanced itself from any other mmo i've played by allowing these amazing social features called getting wrecked by cheat engine.

It has a social system that definitely sets it apart from any MMO from the 1990's that did not include a social system.

As for whether the ESO engine could be used for another genre... One of my fears is that we will find out this weekend that Zenimax thinks it would work nicely in a post-apocalyptic world.

It just occurred to me that this would also be a great engine for if the Fighting Fantasy series of books from back in the 1980's/1990's (I'm old :() was ever made into a full-fledged MMO. B)

The graphics here are great and the first thing I said when I first loaded in to Ali'kirr desert was this would look awesome as a Star Wars game on Tatooine . I'm sure they could do it with other types of games but the security would be a huge issue still .

The engine is too...Standard. It uses "zones", for crying out loud; a budget feature developed by Sony, so as to lazily split up the game world, with each segment allotted to it's own core 'n' database 'n' such.

The only thing that makes the game stand out is the siege gameplay, and even then, it isn't the first; Kingdom Heroes at ballistae, trebuchets and all that good stuff. What it did even better, was have the siege take part in the actual game world that was also one big ass map; no zones to speak of.

Shame that it was a FTP grindfest, as that's what killed it.

What I'd like to see, is a full-on open world PvP game in imperial China. We don't get much of that era here in the west, and boy does China have some sweet landscapes.

I could see the ESO engine for a lot of game backgrounds. Of course, most are not likely to happen since the ones who hold their licenses will want to make their own game... but some, maybe?

The neat thing about the eso engine, it can work well for many styles, not just sword&sorcery.
I could see a Scifi game on it too, from cyberpunk (Neuromancer MMORPG?) to postapocalyptic (Fallout Online, anyone?), or a steampunk themed one (League of Extraordonary Gentleman?)... if they added some flight sim part for spaceships, the basic system could also work for a spare operah style game (If it was Babylon-5 Online, I'd never stop playing... ;) )
