EDIT (06-21-2016)

With today's announcement of the next DLC pack, we can now say that ZOS HAS CONFIRMED that costume dyeing is coming!
Here's the link in case anyone missed it:
http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2016/06/21/update-11-featuring-shadows-of-the-hist-first-look

And here's the important bit (for this thread):
We'll be discussing some of Update 11's additional features at a later date, including new motifs, new item sets, improved facial effects, the ability to dye costumes...

First of all:
THANK YOU, ZOS! I knew you were listening - even when you don't reply to our threads ;)
This is SO amazing and now I can finally start buying costumes knowing that they'll be worth their price.

However, as the good members of the Night's Watch we all are (wait, wrong univer-- shhh!) our watch only ends when we die, so.... Let's talk about the dyes!
I'm only saying this because of the recent data-mining thread that uncovered what seems to be DYE PACKS.
  • Please, the dyes must be the same we have available for our gear. And dyeing costumes must be free - we are already paying for them!
  • Dyes are one of the awesome things that reflect our achievements and make achievements worth it in the first place! Please, no selling of dyes :(

That said... we'll eagerly await more news. Thank you for listening to the little things that count, ZOS!

WE KNOW

*Dark Brotherhood's hand*

Ok, ZoS, I'll keep it short since it's something that a lot of people have been asking for ages... :P
Personalities have a lot of potential, thanks!
Hats are cool!
Combining appearance items are cool, everything is neat, but......

    Exactly!

    And not only that...
    1. The idea of spending money is to look unique. But hey - everyone else will look the same! Yay.
    2. They give us really cool colors for our achievements and... lol. Can't use them with our cool costumes.
    3. I LOVE THAT COSTUME! Too bad it is made in my least favorite color. But hey, no worries, here's one in your favorite color... but it's ugly as hell!

    Dyes

But what if they later can sell you a recoloured version of that outfit you liked back then under a diffrent name? but you allready bought the one before because you could live with the ugly colour cuz it was so cool but now theres a new one in the right colour! Maybe even a new hat on it! like the Evening dress and the wedding dress! in other words its not gonna happen... i wish it would but its not gonna.

Bingo! What next, demanding you should be able to change your mount's color? Then how would ZOS keep re-marketing the same horses/cats/etc with different textures?

We should be asking not for dyable costumes but...

    -Clothing/armor motifs of costumes.
    -Imprintable custom costumes.

Think bigger and more long term.

Well, they have already sold a lot of costumes, if they allow people to "craft" costumes and make the items they equip look like costumes, they would be facing a lot of customer rage :P
    and with good reason...

So I don't see this happening, even if would be thinking bigger and better :P
Perfect scenario would be something like LOTRO's Wardrobe and Outfits system. This is the most perfect character customization (in terms of gear) I have ever seen. Add the ESO 3-layered dyeing system on top of it and it's perfect.
But I guess we'll never see something like that in ESO. :(

But... They DID confirm they wanted to make Costumes dyeable once. I'm too lazy to look for the thread now - but they did confirm it is something they are going to implement.

That's why I'm not asking for it. I'm asking WHEN :P

Actually... I think we should ask for both, @Gidorick. Imprintable/craftable costumes are definitely something I'd love to see, but it would be a lot of work. Dyable costumes will probably be easier to implement as an interim solution.
Along with weapon dyes, because the CP 150-160 weapons are ugly as hell (actually they start looking ridiculous around CP 90) .

You misunderstand @DaniAngione , I think everyone who owns the costume should get the motif. The purchase should include the costume and a motif. I remember that they said they wanted to add dyes to costumes... and a good way to do this is to offer what I've suggested. It gives players the look that they want while also giving players more elaborate options.

I believe ZOS has said previously that they will NOT be adding the ability to dye costumes because they are not designed around the 'three color' system that we have for armor dying and they have no intention to make them that way.

IIRC they said that was why you couldn't dye costumes at the time, because they don't have the 3 Colors Areas...
but did they ever outright say No, Never Gonna Happen?

& if they added those 3 Color Areas, why not be able to open Dye Costume right from the collectibles tab?
I hope the amount of Crown Purchases would make it worth the effort to implement.

I'm pretty sure that's not true :P They better find a new excuse :D
I mean, we have several NPCs with dyed costumes. Just check out the new zone, plenty of variations from the romanesque/greek costumes, also a red version of the Redguard dancing costume inside Dibella's chapel, etc...

      @Gidorick
Oh, sorry, I didn't understand it like that. But that could still be a problem :P I like to change my visuals/costume all the time, even if I had them as motifs, I couldn't afford crafting a cp160 gold set with gold enchantments every time I wanted to change my looks :P

For that to work we would indeed need an easy way to change our equipment motif - or lotro's outfit system, where we can equip the appearance of an item but keep the original's stats and such. What I like about Lotro's is that it includes a wardrobe (where you can "store" the items that you only want the appearance (and throw the item away). In ESO this would allow the long requested ability to use the appearance of low level sets, for example. And the fact that it had several "Outfit" slots which you could easily swap, so you could have your casual, town clothing; your adventure set; your battle set; a winter set; etc... and swap between them easily :D Also, it gives plenty of options for ZoS to profit by selling more outfit slots or more wardrobe space. :D

If we cannot dye them in the conventional sense because of the three colour system then perhaps they could have a drop down menu with a choice of options?

Khajiit will have this dress in green (from a choice of green, white or light blue) or this one in red (from a choice of red, royal blue or purple).

The options could either be available at the time of selecting to wear (preferable) or the time of purchase (rather less preferable but better than the nothing).

There will always be more important things to do first, because what is important is different for each person and because not everybody has to focus on the same issue.

With this mentality, changes to character customization will never be made. There are enough people complaining about stuff like PvP lag and the likes, and dismissing other issues as unimportant is like dismissing someone for working in an animal shelter because they are not working on an orphanage instead.

On topic, yes, the forums remember. We still want to dye costumes.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

      Meet my characters:
      Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

That need would be fulfilled by the Custom Imprintable Costume @DaniAngione

Make any costume you want with any look you want. Sure it's not immediate gratification because you'd have to make the items first, but damn... only so much of a game should be one click away.
