I was stealing stuff and an NPC called me a "son of a dog". I mean, really? How old are we? Five? What's with this fear to use some vulgar language that fits the scene?

If I caught someone stealing my stuff, the last thing I would call them is a "son of a dog"...

In a totally fictional fantasy world why would they use modern American vulgarity? It would just drop me right out of the moment if someone started berating me in such language. True, son of a dog, is somewhat unimaginative but so is modern American street talk.

Yeah, most of the PvE content in this game is pretty juvenile. Cyrodiil zone chat and PMs are where the real fun is.

Also, while we're on the subject, why aren't skooma and moon sugar more prevalent? Wth? These are supposed to be staples of Elder Scrolls games.

It's because the western world is pretty sensitive & easily offended, so we can't even have bad language and such in mature games these days. :p Look what happened to one of Tracer's poses in Overwatch, for example. It was "too sexualized...." :disappointed:

Are you sure "son of a dog" isn't a highly vulgar phrase to the people and cultures of Tamriel? Your post got me thinking that a lot swears are slang, and it would take me out of the world to hear NPC use modern equivalents.

I agree completely. It's like those mid 2000's M rated FPS games that have their Navy Seals saying things like "Darn". I suggested the concept of a Brutality Pack ( linky: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/222351/brutality-pack-concept) that would have more gore brought to ESO.

I wouldn't mind that including some foul language but honestly, that should just be in the base game.

That being said, I don't think we need to have real world sayings and insults in TES. Sometimes, sure, but not always. The specific example you speak of could have been something like "Son of a Serpent", or "Son of a Fox" (referring to the Grey Fox, which would make contextual sense), or it could be a completely made up word. The best example I can think of is "n'wah". It means nothing to us but I know if I hear it I should feel insulted.

"Son of a dog" does seem a bit... Saturday morning cartoon.

The real world equivalent literally means "son of a dog", except it specifies it's a female dog. I fail to see how it doesn't fit the scene, the heart of the insult is preserved.

No problem! Actually, it's supposed to mean "outsider" or "invader" or "slave" apparently (it's a strictly Dunmeri term, though, like "s'wit" which is slow-wit or slack-wit).

"Fetcher" is also a Dunmeri word for slave, supposedly.

Even though they have a lot of international employees, Witcher 3 was developed in a Central/Eastern European cultural setting (hell, we actually added swear words in Mass Effect localization where there originally were none...) and takes place in a universe established in books filled with crass humor. Erasing vulgarity and sex would be going against the atmosphere of the series. On the other hand, recent Elder Scrolls games are usually pretty tame in this regard and when insults are used, they're derived from local culture and language, not modern English slang.

"Fetcher" is also a Dunmeri word for slave, supposedly.

I know it means outsider/slave @Bookwyrm , but like most of our curses, the applied meanings are different. People who call someone a female dog aren't meaning to call them a dog, they're meaning to call them a dirty, despicable, untrusted, or cowardly person.

I have always taken N'Wah to be taken as being "unwanted" or "undesired". s'wit ... that pretty much seems to be a Tamrielic version of our S-word.

Each Tamriel culture should have their own culture's insults. An Argonian saying something like "Dry-Skin' should be an insult. A Khajiit calling someone clawless could be seen as an insult. Milk Drinker is a good example of this (even though it's a real world insult too).

To me "Son of Dog" only seems appropriate if it's coming from a Khajiit or being said to a khajiit.

Anyway, This is all just showing that TES has it's own curse words. ZOS doesn't need to resort to using our culture's curse words.

The witcher 3 video only displayed some petty vulgar lowbrow insults, neither creative nor funny. I don't think I would relate being adult with speaking like a teen who has something to prove. I'm not saying that ESO insults are witty or clever in the general case, but that video is a pathetic example if it were meant to be one.

Let's examine a bit of Shakespeare shall we? Don't worry, you'll be quite amused.

"I must tell you friendly in your ear, sell when you can, you are not for all markets." --As You Like It.

"Thou art a base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy worsted-stocking knave; a lily-liver'd, action-taking, whoreson, glass-gazing, superserviceable, finical rogue; one-trunk-inheriting slave; one that wouldst be a bawd in way of good service, and art nothing but the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar, and the son and heir of a mungril ***." --King Lear.

"Tempt not too much the hatred of my spirit, for I am sick when I do look on thee." --A Midsummer Night's Dream.

"I desire that we be better strangers." --As You Like It.

I try to avoid vulgar language as much as reasonable, though I'll bear it if material is otherwise very appealing. My 4 year old son likes to watch me play too, so I'm happy the game's language is not vulgar. I do have to put on my headphones when in Team Speak, though!

I agree. It's so strange to me how weirdly puritanical millennials are. And disturbing how they seem to be on a crusade against 'offensiveness' and are pushing, and often succeeding, in turning the world beige.
