Not sure if any of this is actually possible but as a console player I would love to use my smart phone to:

Make Custom Gear load outs to swap between characters or just be able to swap gear between characters (without logging out and in)

Check my crafting timers

Writ reset timers

What the Daily pledges are

Who's Online

Up to date leaderboards (Cyrodiil, Weeklies etc)

Cyrodiil Map (so if you are Emp you can see if you are to be deposed or crowned etc).

What "Xur" has for the weekend so I don't have to go check. (Pretty much would love anything that I have to use load times to check on when I could be playing the game).

If there is an APi for console and the ability to check the number of players online total in a campaign I would be interest in that maybe even have a highlight of the top 2% so you can see where you need to be etc.

Apps aren't just for phones, you know. Alas, I don't think Zenimax have even considered an API system so that third party developers can create apps.

Doubt they would let 3rd parties work on something that weakens server security. Not a sound choice in today's world.

If they produce a proper API system it won't be an issue, Eve is a prime example of this. Even with read-only access it would be an incredible tool for guild leaders and players alike. I would imagine that plenty of people would use these tools, even those of us who only use a desktop; if I can have an app let me know when it's time to feed the horse I can get on with actually working, instead of lurking around Wayrest castle stealing everything. The beauty of an API system is that people can write the app for whatever platform(s) they want.

As far as Zenimax versus third party, think of it as an extension of the current modding system. There's so many things an API could be used for that it would be better to let developers make the tools they want (and other players are likely to need), rather than game developer resources being used for a one size fits all app that doesn't work any better than the game client, and doesn't do ~things~ that people actually want.
