To be fair, on both drop rates and guild prices, nirn has always been a good seller and low drop rate. It's actually easier to get nirn now since ALL of Craglorn drops it now, not just Upper Crag. Prices vary by demand. When the trait was bugged, Fortified Nirn was even higher. Potent has always been higher since it has a lower drop rate. It's not fair to blame prices on guild stores...it's all about supply and demand. And, yes, it's a good idea to do the writs. Sorry OP, you may not like it, but things are better for nirn now than they used to be.

Can someone confirm if this is true or not that it drops from all over Crag and not just the north? Not that I don't believe you, but this is the first I have heard such a claim.

It does drop from anywhere in craglorn

Did this update happen recently? I thought it was only on writ surveys that it could be in Lower Craglorn. I do remember hearing it would be more available, but I just don't recall it announced. Definitely could have missed it though.

Not sure but I think it was when Orsinium hit.

Edit: One more tip since I ain't playing that much anymore. The best luck I had is to go hunting for them right after the servers go live after a patch, It is like the counters reset or something.

Yeah patch notes from last year included the change

And that's the only nirnhoned item you will ever loot. So really, if you want to research ninrhoned, just buy it from other crafters.

ok... so basically it's impossible then?

If only one piece of nirnhoned gear drops per character, there are 34 possible research slots and hardly anyone runs Craglorn any more, how is anyone supposed to research it?

I get that it's supposed to be rare, but that just seems ridiculous.

You'll have to either buy pieces from a guild store trader or get someone to make you one. There is no other choice.

I recently gave up waiting and bought all of the light armor and woodworking pieces for research - and I searched every single guild trader I have access to before doing so just to get the best price possible for each piece. As I'm sure you're familiar with the prices you know I still paid quite the large sum.

That's just the way it is, and I don't foresee any change.

It's not that hard, just ask someone (e.g. from guild) to craft research items for you if you hand her/him the materials.
Only downside is the investment in fortified and potent nirncrux but since research takes a long time you can easily restock for the next batch.

It encourages trading and cooperation. Your guildmates will probably craft the items very cheaply or even for free if you provide the nirncrux (which you said you have in abundance). Lots of people have researched every possible trait by now, so it's not hard to find someone who can help you.

Sorry you disapprove, but it has been this way since nirnhone trait was introduced. Like Rosveen said, players have to work together to learn all the nirn traits. It's worth it IMO, despite the time investment. Nirnhone is a preferred trait on weapons, so focus on learning the trait on the most popular weapons. The only reason to learn nirn on armor at this point is to be able to pass the trait on to others who want to have all research completed.

It can take several hours to find nirn, or it can take 15 minutes. For this reason I rarely bother farming it for sale since gold can be made much quicker doing other activities. It is often more efficient just to farm mobs for gold and then buy the nirn off a trader. It could take three hours to find nirn, but in that time you could probably make about 80K gold grinding a public dungeon.

You don't need level 9 to have writs in Cralorn - 7 and 8 level writs are also turned in in Craglorn. 6 is Coldharbour, 10 is Wrothgar (unless you don't have the DLC, I suppose).

i recall patch saying if not dlc your 10 writs would still be in craglorn or maybe just turn in.

So if you are a sub maybe let your sub lapse for a short writs in crag chance?

Nirnhoned was one of the first traits I learned completely. I bought most of mine from guild traders and supplied the Nirncrux to people I trusted to make research items when I couldn't find an item I was looking for.

I used to tell people all the time that the Nirncrux no longer dropped exclusively in Upper Craglorn, but they just blew me off like I was trolling them and continued clinging to the area around Dragonstar Arena. Always kinda got a giggle from that as I made my loops around the map picking up stones.

Crafting surveys definitely have an improved drop rate, so if you have that option it is the route to go. Also you can find Nirncrux from enemies that drop leather materials, like the werewolves in Hircines ...Haunt? I think it was called.. found 2 potent and 1 fortified in there running thru with guildmates. So if you are running through Craglorn delves doing quests you better be checking those corpses.

As far as drop rates go, timing is everything. I'm pretty sure the servers are programmed to limit a certain amount in a certain time frame and if no one has been hunting in a while the chances of finding it goes up. I have gotten two stones or sometimes one of each multiple times in one node. I've even gotten 3 a time or two (two of one and one of the other). I've also had luck with higher chances when another hunter runs past a node. If they skip it be sure to look at it yourself.

Edit: on a side note, I also think a hot zone rotates around the map. I've come away with 10 in an hour before and other times I've only gotten one or two in two or three hours of looking.

I am pretty sure that this is entirely myth...

It is not a myth that if you listen to good music while farming it, you will find more of it. This is due to the fact that you lose track of how long you are out there and farm longer, which is the main way to find more nirncrux.

I get that it's supposed to be rare, but that just seems ridiculous.

I have all the nirn traits for heavy armor done. I have all metal weapons but daggers done. I have most of the medium armor, and half of the light armor done. I have bows, inferno staff and restoration staff researched. I'm working on either getting the gold to buy the nirn or finding the nirn for the last of the items I need to research.

I have done none of the Craglorn quests at all. Just turned in writs there. I do, however, belong to two really fantastic guilds. If I send one of my guildies the nirn stone and a request, they'll send back the item for me to research. They don't charge, and neither do I. I'll make trait items for research for any of the traits for free. I'll make you a nirn item for free, but you have to give me the nirn since rng gremlins hate me and I don't have any "free" ones laying about. For that matter I'll make every level of gear to v16 free, and improve it to green for guildmates. It may take me some time, but I will get my main crafter, who is also the first character I made in the game, the complete list of traits and motifs. [If v16 gear didn't take so many mats, I'd do that for free too. As it is I don't charge, but if someone wants v16 gear, they have to give me the mats to make it.]

Yea, but is there any more? Or does everyone just get one piece and that's it?

You can either trade or purchase from a guild trader. There's one in Wayrest that seems to keep it fairly well stocked for reasonable rates (as far as market goes).

    Annalyse wrote: »
That said, this is definitely your best plan. I have two vet alts that I stopped levelling crafting on at 9 so that they can do writs in Craglorn every day. From these writs I get quite a few surveys, and I get a lot of nirns to sell (of both types) from the surveys.

As for writs, I don't think it's that the surveys produce nirn. It's more that there is, if I'm remembering correctly, a 1 in 50 chance of getting a nirn drop. The more void you harvest, the better your chances of getting it. The surveys just provide a large crop to harvest, which in turn increases the chances of getting a nirn drop.

I try to circuit the large loop daily and generally get one drop most of the time.

It's common for trusted guildmates or friends to make them for each other for free if the Nirncrux is provided. Also most people will do it for strangers for a small tip (3-5k is polite). I finished all of mine that way a year ago. In fact if you're desperate for Nirnhoned items to research send me mail in game and I can help you out.

There is no timing in servers nor other mythical way to increase droprates. You get more nirn when you loot more nodes. It is that simple. Survey map nodes have higher drop rates than regular nodes. Droprate between fortified and potent is about 4:1 .

When nirncrux came we formed a network to pass on the new traits among crafters. I had four crafters and few mules learning the traits. Non-crafting guildies donated us new trait items from the quest. After six hours we could create copies to others and within few months we were able to craft all nine trait items.

My fiancé and I got stopped dead in our tracks when we followed the quest line to the point where it required 4 people to open the door at the lake. I already had to beg my son to help us open the door that required 3 earlier. I really wish it wasn't required to have a certain number of players to proceed. No one wants to go to craglorn for anything other than nirn farming anymore. Feeling screwed by some social experiment gone wrong with ZOS trying to force ppl to play a certain way as usual...

It's not that simple although I don't know what it is, it may just be a stuck RNG but I've picked them up nearly back to back (1 stone every 3 or 4 nodes - more if you include multiples) and other times I've received none in three hours (0 in hundreds of nodes).
