Battleaxes beg to differ.some of the Two Handed skill abilities wouldn't work with a Spear since they were made while having a sword in mind.
I too think spears,..and crossbows,as are in Morrowind, would be great.
However,I do have one question.
Spears are for the most part thrown weapons. What do you do once you have thrown your spear,..run and get it back?
They are like darts only very long ones. You throw them a long distance to hit one target.
They wouldnt so well in a melee. More than one enemy would cause a problem, more so if even one enemy was up close.
TheShadowScout wrote: »You are not alone in your hopes! I too wish they would give us some more options in many regards, and especially when it comes to weapon lines... like:
Polarms - for everything from pikes to halberds, scythes to tridents, glaives to pitchforks... could copy half their animations from the aedric spear line, andgive us weapons that perhaps have a longer range then any other melee weapon, but do only half damage if the opponent gets too close, which might make them interesting if tricky to use sometimes...
One-handed and Ranged - with throwing weapons as offhand, much like the javelin-throwers in Orsinium... be it such javelins, throwing axes, shuriken, throwing daggers or bloody darts, I think it would ne nifty to have a weapon line that has a mix of mid-range throwing attacks and melee strikes... would not even mind if they borrowed the skills from existing lines, really...
One-handed and Magic - with an rune or wand as offhand, I'd love to see a skill line for balanced characters, providing a mix of both elementally charged melee strikes and magical mid-range and AoW attacks for all those who want the "Spellsword feeling"
Brawling - I would also love to see that one, though I think even with brawling weapons like punch daggers or brass knuckles it should not match up to proper weapon skills in terms of damage, but instead offer a wide range of CC options, from the leg sweep knockdown to the kick-below-the-belt stun...
Maybe someday I'll write up some concept for those...
You may want to ask the greek Hoplites what they think about spears in melee... or swiss Pikemen and Halbardiers...Spears are for the most part thrown weapons. What do you do once you have thrown your spear,..run and get it back?

It is true that spears and other polearms are less then effective at knife range, but at longer melee range they were THE weapon to go to throughout more centuries then most people realize.
The trown ones were usually javelins as has been mentioned, smaller and beter balanced then spears, the most famous of which might be the roman Pilum, and would be covered by my "One-handed and Trown" notion...
And while these are more common as formation weapons, there have been several "hero" polearms in fact and fiction, from Odins Gungir to Cu Cullains Gae Bulg, from Poseidons trident to the Lance of Longinus... I am less versed in eastern mythology, though I would be certain it also comtained some heroic naginata-wielders and the like.
So, completely viable for our characters, I'd say!

Perhaps @Volkodav should go watch the movie Red Cliff for a cinematic representation of the great Guan Yu wielding his crescent halberd and Zhao Yun with the Dragon Spear. Very effective, both at close, medium range, and thrown if necessary.
Wand and shield.

I understand they have other things they would rather work on, but still; I want them.
You're probably gonna just say well play a templar, but Aedric spear isnt the same.
I wanna use one on my sorcerer, so I can be bad but stabby

Interestingly enough. Theres a few indicators in the game that Spears were once a thing and still have some presence in the game.
If you go to Skywatch in Auridon. Youll notice Fighters Guild members practicing with Spears and the movements they use arent utilized in any other weapon set (parrying motions). Then if you go to Orsinium in Wrothgar youll notice that there are many Adventurer type NPCs running around with what appears to be a Quiver on their back. But the Quiver isnt holding arrows. Its holding small throwing Spears.
Whos to say if this is just more immersive things added to the game. But personally I feel like it would be a waste to have added such details knowing it would never be taken advantage of.
This, this, this, this, THIS. ^^^^^ProfessorKittyhawk wrote: »To support the addition of aoears, some fighters guild people are practicing and training with them outside the fighters guild in Skywatch. Models and animations are already there for some basic spear attacks.

The same goes for Hand-to-Hand attacks.
We already have all of the animations we need in-game. There is absolutely no reason to code new ones.
I would be perfectly happy if they added spears and other polearms to the Two-Handed line, and fist wraps, etc. to the Dual Wield line.
No extra mechanical work or animation work. Just attach the appropriate animation to the appropriate skill and you're done.

I also support the hand to hand idea. Khajiit have always had an advantage in hand to hand combat in previous games (or at least in Skyrim) which was an interesting twist to the typical sword or bow or staff. Considering there are places on Khenarthi's Roost where you see Khajiit practicing what appears to martial arts, that could and should be in the game.
Maybe instead of just adding these to the game they could be unlocked by maxing out a particular weapon's skill line. When you, say, max out the bow skill line, you unlock a quest to unlock Crossbows and crossbow specific skills. When you max out dual wielding, you unlock a quest (that could well take place on Khenarthi's Roost) that unlocks hand to hand combat skills. And pole arms and spears could he unlocked by maxing out two handed and/or staff skill lines. Kind of give people an incentive for trying out other weapons and skills. If they aren't going to add new classes or class morphs, this could be a fun alternative.

As far as polearms, we just need a new craft style / motif, really. And as far as dedicated Single Hand sword and unarmed, simply fancy'ing up the current animations would suffice.
