new player feedback for devs

hello while the servers are down i figure this would be a good time to give my feedback on my experience as a new player to this game:
  • There is very limited amount of weapons you can use in this game, I saw NPCs using spears, but I cannot use them? I want to use 1 handed sword only, I can't.
  • As a new player I cannot auction my items off at any marketplace, unless I join a guild. I don't want to join a guild.
  • New player zones such as dragon roost , i think its called, has no access to a lot of things in the game such as thief guild entrance or crafting trainers until much further into the island
  • As a khajit I ended up in the high elf starting area, rather than dragon roost, where most khajit npcs are. I did not have a choice about this, and had to ask other players to explain it to me.
  • Class system seems to just inherently give you access to skills and magic spells with no training and no knowledge or anything, it would be more immersive if you could learn the abilities from npcs.
  • There are no animations for looting corpses or skinning animals, its just a ui prompt. it'd be more immersive with just a simple pick up animation, or skinning animation.
  • leveling speed is too fast early on, i'd prefer it to be slower.
  • when i first got the game, i signed up for ESO plus without knowing really what were the benefits, if I knew , i would not have signed up. The benefits aren't enough, if I sign up i'd like some sort of exclusive content or quests or system within the game, that makes it worth subscribing, a 10% buff is not what I'd want.
  • Bag space is a huge issue, the game never explained to me about bag space, I had to ask other players once again to understand you can upgrade it.
  • I really enjoyed the thief additions to the game, stealing items and dealing with guards is very fun, i hope you add more aspects to the game like that. Perhaps some sort of fishing skill tree, with boats and such? I noticed I did not gain provisioning skill from fishing.
  • the bounty system is good but the penalty for bounties is not enough, a guard running up to you asking for money then walking away is kinda lame, i'd prefer some sort of jail system for immersion or people that track you down trying to go after your bounty, like bounty hunters not guards.
  • there needs to be a way to rearrange the hud , such as moving the health bars closer to the edge of the screen and the compass up or down lower on the screen, the compass being up top sort of is in the way of the view constantly, while at the bottom it wouldn't be blocking anything but the floor which nobody looks at anyway.
  • this game needs to open up user created content , allow modders to improve upon the game and the players to vote for the improvements, or some sort of feature survey where players can vote for what they want next to be added to the game. similar to steam workshop.
  • the crown shop is very limited and as a new player I have 2000 crowns but no idea what to buy with them, i wish you would add more content to the cash shop.
  • also I wish you could craft in the wild, start camp fires, have tents, maybe some sort of survival system or a zone where you have to survive the environment, maybe some stuff like making a bow, animal hides, crafting throwing spears from wood stuff like that,

anyway thats my feedback

If you are on PC, you might want to have a look at http://www.esoui.com/addons.php - there are lots of options to customize your UI in a huge variety of ways.

Btw, if you are ESO+, you have access to all DLC content right away - those DLCs will scale you up to a higher level. Certain NPCs will approach you in cities and give you advice how to get there. If you want to be part of the thief's guild, go to a outlaw refuge and meet the NPC Guen, she will lead you to the thief's guild.

A lot of what you want is actually in the game - use the F1 key - there is a quick tutorial with explainations about key features of the game.

This for now, if you still have questions after reading the tutorial, feel free to ask on the forums - and welcome in Tamriel.

    Welcome to the game!!

Some of the things you mention are deliberate. For instance, the market place is supposed to be like this to prevent the issues found in other games, and it has worked. It has forced me to meet other players and to become involved in the community. I've been here since beta, and previously played games solo, rarely joining a guild or groups. But I like this game's system. I love the guild system in place now. I hated it at first, but now I don't think I would ever want to go to any other system.

You are free to advertise your items for sale in zone chat, which is what many people do. I don't think I'd ever want to go back to an auction house system again. In this system, no handful of persons can control the entire market. I hated that people would buy up everything listed in the auction houses and relist for higher prices. Here, people may attempt to do that, but they can only effect the pricing of the five guilds they belong to and not to the whole community.

People level faster now because players who came in after the first year whined and complained that it took too long to level so several things were implemented to relieve their "suffering". I too think it goes too quickly. I've been here since beta and still do not have a v16 character because I am more interested in playing the game and doing everything there is to do. Two years later and I'm still just enjoying the game.

If people had their characters in jail for any length of time, it would be bad. People would just log out of their characters and not play. Transporting them to a jail would just tax the server. Why bother if they are just going to be let go immediately like in Skyrim? I see your point, and felt a nudge the same when it came out, but unless there is going to be dungeons, delves and content in the jail system, there really is no point. If the guard asks for money and walks away before you pay, it is glitched. Walking away and coming back will fix it if you really want to pay the fine.

I hope you get used to our way of playing and enjoy the game.

Crafting is something what gets very versatile after you have learnt a couple of motifs - crafting styles - and with higher skills and levels the variety of materials is just overwhelmingly huge - you will see, crafting is a really interesting profession, but as always masters do not fall from the sky, you will have to work your way up.

I would like you want a tent and a camp fire - we will see with what ZOS will come up, when they will do the housing DLC eventually later this year. This game is expanding every 3 months with new DLC content and as an ESO+ member you will not have to pay extra for this content - so ESO+ is worthwhile - as far as bag space goes, ESO+ members will get a crafting bag, which holds all the crafting materials soon - this will solve some inventory and bank issues - do you even know that you have a bank account as well to store your stuff there?- Just visit a bank and talk to the banker.

Well if you are on the NA server and AD join a guild, they won't bite you, they won't shame you, they will in most cases go out of their way to help you.

May I suggest you join either DIG (Dominion Imperial Guard) and or DUG ( Dominion Undaunted Guard ) both are 2 of the best guilds in the game and have some of the best players in the game, and are willing to help unless they are already helping someone.

Give it a shot you won't regret it :)

just some more things to point out after playing some more:
    • moving forward with bow in first person causes awkward animation
    • cannot use alchemy to make poisons
    • player's cant use torches
    • cannot mute the annoying sounds other player's pets make
    • water doesn't have current
    • cannot hide shoulder slots- having heavy shoulders ontop of medium chest piece causes the armor to float in midair
    • drinking alcohol/ using skooma effects not present
    • needs option to transition to third person for animations like logging/mining the same way skyrim would
    • needs option to disable bonus leveling exp from eso plus
    • Bug with transitioning to areas forcing you into third person and no way to go back to first person
    • cant shoot birds with bow

i really wish there was a way to make my character level slower, because i keep overleveling for the areas im in, and then i end up getting no loot from any monsters or things like the anchor events when i'm still not finished all the quests in the area

Hey there Kratier! Although it looks you were looking for Skyrim 2, I hope you are enjoying it! One tip for you - to easily move from first person to third person, there is a keybind. I believe by default it is V. Press V and use your mouse scroll wheel to choose how far you want third person to be, then press V again and it will put you into first person!

If you plan on completing all quests, unfortunately you will overlevel the area. It's unfortunate if you want to complete everything, but this allows you to pick and choose quests you feel fit your character. If your character didn't fit a quest you could skip it but still be able to level up decently since there are so many others.

Many things in the game are different because this is a MMO rather than a single player RPG. I really recommend joining a guild even though you mentioned you don't want to. This will allow you to meet other players who can help you out, as well make friends so you can do things in game with them! Some content (such as group dungeons) are geared towards groups and you won't be able to complete them solo.

You can use 1 handed sword (without a shield). Just put a sword in one hand. However you wont' be effective later since it's not an ideal setup.

    Templar's have spears as abilities.

[*] New player zones such as dragon roost , i think its called, has no access to a lot of things in the game such as thief guild entrance or crafting trainers until much further into the island

I'm guessing you mean Khenarthi's Roost. You used to start on the island, but players during beta complained that it was too limiting because you had to complete the island to go to the main land.

Another thing the vampires need fangs, also you would want to play in third person people basically have to in this game.
In pvp first person is not viable, you have to see whats around you in third person. This is basically a third person game and I have no problems with this I played skyrim in third person. But some players do have problems with it, some will still use first person but not many will.

I do agree with a jailing system maybe some cool system where you go into a mine and forced to work off your bounty, once a day your able to just go through it instantly but this could also give rp criminals a place to rp if they add a jailing system.
I would love to see this implemented they do really need to add some form of jailing option.

Another thing underwater content :( No underwater content, that should have been added from the start.

Basically since this is a online rpg as they are said to call it, they don't have what the single player games have. No mods they do have addons for pc only. But we do get to see some of things the single player games have. One you could become a vampire or werewolf but not both.

The justice system, one thing I dislike about it is they should have made a bounty system for each zone, maybe after fifteen minutes the bounty would transfer to other nearby zones because, word has got out by courier and it would depend on the offense maybe a bounty tracker for assault, theft and murder. For theft depending on the severity guards would not try and kill you, if you murdered someone then they will be more hostile depending on the number of people you killed.

Maybe transforming into a werewolf would be a kill on sight til your dead or heat is off you if you are hostile in werewolf form.

Vampirism would be in the assault bounty section, depending on the area this could be a kill on sight heat, or basically just an assault without the extra heat if you feed off someone.
Feeding should do damage to people and npcs, like 2500 damage per second as well as act as a heal like it does currently if your taking damage while feeding its basically keeps you alive.

I do want to see them add more skill lines, and werebeast types.
Wereshark, werebear and werecroc would be a nice addition to the game and I would like to see them add all three as possible types you can become.
Spears should be added it would be nice to see them add spears and crossbows.
They could have separate skill lines for both.
They really do need to add a posion system they did have this in beta but they disabled it on purpose they might have feared it would be unbalanced. They might return it with the dark brotherhood dlc we don't know what they are planning to do with the dlc yet. But we are going to see Anvil and Kavatch with the dlc so hopefully Kavatch is not destroyed in this one.

Hopefully there will be some nice rp places in the dark brotherhood dlc.

i wasn't looking for skyrim 2.0, i know its an mmo and i know what the buttons do.
its just inconsistent design, you go into third person on your horse, but then stay in first person while harvesting

also to "Thevampirenight", your asking them to basically make huge content additions, its not realistic to expect something like just add 3 different werebeasts, that'll never happen. the things im asking for are minor tweaks or changes that could all be done in less than a week.

apparently they already made a way better bounty system, but then scrapped it. they could easily bring it back and improve upon it in some test server or something.

I think many players (myself included) would like to see more weapon skill lines implemented at some point, and given enough time they probably will, but they already have a ton of other things they are working on before they would get to that, and need to get things a bit more balanced before adding new skills.
    • As a new player I cannot auction my items off at any marketplace, unless I join a guild. I don't want to join a guild.
As somebody else pointed out, that is by design to make it more difficult for players to monopolize the market. While I didn't like it at first, I've gotten used to it and actually prefer it over an auction house. I would definitely recommend joining a couple trading guilds, even if you're not big on the social side of this game. I've been a member of 3 trading guilds for over a year now and don't think I've ever spoken to another member of the guild. If you're on PC NA server, send me a private message on the forums and I can invite you to one of the guilds I'm in.
    • New player zones such as dragon roost , i think its called, has no access to a lot of things in the game such as thief guild entrance or crafting trainers until much further into the island
While I can't say for certain, I'd imagine this is also by design to help ease players into the many different systems in ESO without having people become overwhelmed with all the different things you can do.
    • As a khajit I ended up in the high elf starting area, rather than dragon roost, where most khajit npcs are. I did not have a choice about this, and had to ask other players to explain it to me.
The high elf starting area (I assume you are referring to Auridon) is the first "real" zone for the AD faction, with Khenarthi's Roost being more of an optional "tutorial" zone for new players. Also, your race doesn't effect which zone you start in, all players in the same alliance will start in the same zone regardless of race.
    • Class system seems to just inherently give you access to skills and magic spells with no training and no knowledge or anything, it would be more immersive if you could learn the abilities from npcs.
I could understand wanting this perhaps the first time through, but by the time you are on your 8th character and just want to hurry up and level up it would be a real pain having to go find an NPC for each skill you want to unlock. You gain experience in a skill line anytime you do something that grants XP (finishing a quest, killing a mob, etc.) and have at least one skill from that skill line on your bar. The more skills you have on your bar, the more XP you get for that skill line too (for instance, if having 1 bow skill on my bar grants me 100 XP for killing a mob, then having 2 skills would grant 200 XP, 3 skills would grant 300 XP, etc.). So leveling up skill lines does require "training" in the sense that you need to be using the skill line to get XP.
    • There are no animations for looting corpses or skinning animals, its just a ui prompt. it'd be more immersive with just a simple pick up animation, or skinning animation.
No argument here. Would be a nice feature but would also be very low on their list of priorities.
    • leveling speed is too fast early on, i'd prefer it to be slower.
I do disagree with this one. Since I primarily PVP, leveling is only a chore to get to the content I want to do. But this really comes down to personal preference. I know some people have come up with the idea of adding a consumable that slows XP gains. While I don't see them doing that anytime soon, I would completely support them adding something like that to the game. Also note that your ESO+ membership does increase your XP gain making you level up quicker.
You do get access to all the DLC without having to buy it as long as your are an ESO+ member. There has also been talk about them adding some additional perks to ESO+ to make it more rewarding.
    • Bag space is a huge issue, the game never explained to me about bag space, I had to ask other players once again to understand you can upgrade it.
100% agree. Inventory management in this game is completely atrocious. Luckily, one of the perks for ESO+ they plan on adding is a crafting bag that'll allow you to consolidate all your crafting materials without taking up space in your inventory.
    • I really enjoyed the thief additions to the game, stealing items and dealing with guards is very fun, i hope you add more aspects to the game like that. Perhaps some sort of fishing skill tree, with boats and such? I noticed I did not gain provisioning skill from fishing.
I imagine they will add more interesting game systems in the future, but again they already have a long list of things to complete over the next couple quarters. ZOS has also said they plan on adding player housing in the not-so-distant future.
    • the bounty system is good but the penalty for bounties is not enough, a guard running up to you asking for money then walking away is kinda lame, i'd prefer some sort of jail system for immersion or people that track you down trying to go after your bounty, like bounty hunters not guards.
They were originally supposed to add an enforcer system to the justice system, where other players could pursue players who were caught stealing or murdering, but too many people complained that they didn't want to be able to be killed by other players, so ZOS recently decided to scrap it. Personally, them deciding not to add this second part of the justice system was a huge disappointment, but ultimately they went with what they thought would make the most players happy.
I agree that ZOS really dropped the ball on options for customization, but if you are on PC there are a ton of addons that not only give you more control of the interface, but also work much better then the original interface anyways!
    • this game needs to open up user created content , allow modders to improve upon the game and the players to vote for the improvements, or some sort of feature survey where players can vote for what they want next to be added to the game. similar to steam workshop.
If you are on PC there are addons available for just about anything you could imagine. This website is a great place to start.
    • the crown shop is very limited and as a new player I have 2000 crowns but no idea what to buy with them, i wish you would add more content to the cash shop.
Don't worry, the cash shop is one of the primary ways ZOS gains revenue, they will always continue to add new stuff there.
    • also I wish you could craft in the wild, start camp fires, have tents, maybe some sort of survival system or a zone where you have to survive the environment, maybe some stuff like making a bow, animal hides, crafting throwing spears from wood stuff like that,
As I've said before, an interesting idea I wouldn't be opposed to, but they have far too many other things to work on to even begin planning something like this.

just wanted to add that i think the thief's guild quest chain is good, but then around rank 7-10 and near the end of the quest chain, its padded/ stretch out way too thin. it completely burnt out my desire to keep playing your mmo
also the thief guild zone/city is not as good as the main game's, way too much generic filler content inbetween the city and destinations. like going from point A to B on that zone was very tedious and not enjoyable, while its very enjoyable to explore and wander in the main game

i don't think i could get 10 feet without another generic 1-2 enemy encounter in my path, but in the main game you only encountered enemies if you ventured into areas where they might be
