Abbreviations,..just a thought.

Why do people need to use abbreviations in the forums so much? So many new players dont know what they are talking about. It would be good to allow them to learn things by using full words. It took me a long while to figure out what was being said a lot,and even now I still have things that people post which are so abbreviated I cant figure them out.Lol.
Just a thought.

I have the same issue with text messages. Forever texting back asking what did they mean. Must be my age... :'(

There is an easy way to fix this problem - just don't reply - if they want to talk to you, they can do it in proper way or be ignored.

It varies, but basically because typing an abbreviation is faster.

Would you rather type out, "Veteran White Gold Tower" or "VWGT"?

Would you rather type out, "Woodworking" or "WW" or "Werewolf"?

    Oh, wait...

Naaah, not age.Well, maybe we are getting bit old. We're from a time when bad grammar and bad spelling was not the thing to show intelligence. The young ones just seem unable to take time to type a full word anymore. XD

    Google is your friend :)

If you're reading the forums, you're online and can google whatever acronym you come across. Some people in these forums have even made nice "dictionaries" you can bookmark:

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/136290/the-eso-slang-and-abbreviation-dictionary/p1

It just occurred to me, ZOS could sticky that post in the general comments section for easy reference. What say you, @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom ?

Yes it did.Sorry.I get it now though.

It happens to us all occasionally.

To be fair, in game abbreviations tend to be a kind of improvised dialect that evolves naturally over time. It's about conveying information as quickly and efficiently as possible. Because, in games like ESO, that relates to keystrokes, abbreviations are the most apparent example. That said, there are others; like having to explain the term and concept of a tank to newbies.

If the game was primarily voice based, you'd probably see a slightly different shorthand emerging. I'm not sure what that would look... or, rather, sound like, specifically. But, it's a natural product of people needing to communicate information quickly.

Unfortunately, this does lead to a learning curve for people coming in from the outside. Which applies to game concepts in general.

That said, I get the irritation with people mauling the language beyond a few abbreviations. I'm right there. Even if I do forget to capitalize and punctuate the odd sentence in zone.

People like to use abbreviations for a number of reasons. Top of the list seems to be laziness, whether in terms of typing out the full name of something, or avoiding saying the full name on TeamSpeak. The other big reason for using acronyms is that a lot of people think they sound cooler when using them, and it allows them to be able to create an "us vs them" scenario, the haves (those who know what the acronym stands for) and the have-nots who are ridiculed for not knowing something that is apparently so obvious that even 3-year old children know it.

Any decent and genuinely considerate person takes the time to explain an acronym or abbreviation to others before beginning to use it regularly within a conversation.

There is value in abbreviations, hence why they've been used for centuries. No, they weren't born when millenials started murdering their respective languages with SMS/instant messaging. They may be a barrier to entry, but they're an easy one to overcome. I gave you 2 instruments in my previous reply - Google and other posts in the forums.

It's OK that you don't want to go to Google every time you encounter a new term. But that's your choice. I disagree that everyone in the forums should cater to it.

Oh,no.I mean here in the forums.

Sorry about the delay, I had to deal with a fit of unconsciousness.

Anyway, it's probably worth remembering the forum draws it's population from the game, so, you're going to see the specialized dialect (abbreviations and all) wander over.
