High level players in lower level zones ruin the game.

So I was trying to complete a dolmen earlier in Deshaan with a few other players my level (15). Unfortunately, a high level VR 16 comes up and starts AOEing everything. We managed to strike a few of them, and get some XP, but the VR16 pretty much ruined it. It's impossible to run around a dolmen and even hit the enemy if you don't have a bow before the VR16 kills them...

Short and sweet, high level players ruin the game when they come into low level zones and steal everything. They literally gain no xp from killing lvl 15 monsters. With that being said, I think something should be done about it. When you're in the area, I think players should automatically be grandfathered into a group (like a dolmen). This way, if you have some annoying vet character killing everything, everyone at least gets xp for trying to assist, even though they steal it.

As it is now, it's really not fair. 9/10 times I go to a dolmen there is a vet char stealing everything. It makes me not want to even try to make an effort. Why would I run around like a chicken with its head cut off just to get there as the VR16 instakills the mobs?

I think they're doing it to get Azure Plasm(s).. not sure if they'll actually get it since they're overleveled though.

There are in game achievements for completing all dolems.

As dolems respawn very quickly, you really have no reason to complain. Just go back to it in ten minutes, or, be greatful for the quick clear. The XP is a handful of individual mobs is nothing on the XP you get for that high level player killing the Dolmen. That player would also get no chest, but you would.

    So... Yeah...

I understand your gripe but they do have the same right as you to kill things in the Dolmen.

When I'm farming low level areas for hide I always ask if anyone wants to group up. If they do I make sure they get hits on them before I finish them but if no one takes me up I just run around one-hitting everything.

Next time try inviting to group

That's what I was doing a while back. Also, as long as you've participated, don't you still get that huge exp tick when it's finally destroyed?

It comes down to common courtesy. If I'm on a character that is high above the zone, I deliberately use light attacks and let the lowbies do most of the work. I do more if it looks like the need help.

High levels can't farm low dolmens for the azure plasm, because they don't get a chest if they are more than 5 levels above the dolmen.

My VR16 sorc chases some of the achievements in low level zones. If I see other players at a dolmen (I am chasing the Molag Bal's Generals achievement), I switch to healing the others. I get a shot in at the boss (just enough to count) but help the other players instead of killing everything myself.

There is no real viable solution that doesn't involve a lot of coding. There are many achievements for dark anchors. I was farming Storm haven for days trying to get the last general :disappointed:

Ideally the vet should have hung back and just light attack the mobs to make sure you get your hits registered.

A cool idea to down scale characters to zone level to make it more interesting. But it's a lot of work for little pay.

What if they added a down-levelling mechanic like Guild Wars 2 has?

In that game if you go into a low level area on a high level character you still have all your skills, equipment etc. but all your stats (including those from your equipment) are scaled down to be equal to a character at the appropriate level. The fact that you have more and better skills (plus some quirks of the scaling system I won't get into for the sake of post length) mean that you're still able to kill things more easily, but you can't go around one-shoting everything so low level players have a much better chance of gaining credit for participation.

Personally I think it's a great system but I'm aware some people don't like it (although I've never really understood why) and I don't know how easy it would be to implement. It might be something that needs to be built into the game from the start.

Same here, when i'm in a low level zone, i switch to healing players.

All i'm interested in is to get the last few elusive generals so there really is no need for me to ruin the dolmen for other players.

I'm sorry but you'll have to live with this. I'm at about 170 dolmens, which means that there's still 80 till I get my precious Enemy of Coldharbour title. It is MUCH faster to just sweep all the low level dolmens than to bother with the vet ones.
Vet players don't steal your loot since they get none from low level dolmens.

You still get exp and the "dolmen completed" achievement if you take part in the (short) fight. You'll see, you'll do the same if you ever decide to get the 250 dolmens achievement. And it's not like all vet players are there at all times, I solo dolmens all the time in beginning zones without anyone being there, meaning you have plenty of opportunity to do them all alone.

This is exactly what I do if my character is way above level. On my lower level characters I have seen exactly what OP is speaking of and it is really frustrating. While in the grand scheme, it may seem insignificant to some, it just makes for poor community building. Also, you just look like a fool and no one cares that you as Vet level X can one-shot a level 15 enemy.

It's not just about getting the XP for completing the dolmen though; it's also about enjoying the fight without some high level player one-shotting everything. That tends to spoil it and make you feel like you shouldn't have bothered.

If I'm ever at a low level dolmen with my high VRs, I also just hang back and at most use some light attacks until I can see if the boss is the General I need. No need to do anything else.

I totally understand the frustration - you want to have the fight and do it yourself. Personally if I'm working on an achievement and in a low zone doing things like dolmens I will heal adventurers and only take out one or two baddies so I've contributed to the event.

Yeah, it's just a courtesy thing. If there are other lower leveled players at the dolmen, I'll just kill one or two things so I get credit and then I start emoting in the middle of the fight. I have found /sitchair to be perfect for establishing myself as the Alpha at the dolmen. If the low levels get in trouble I'll hit them with Vigor or some other heal.

A high level player doing dolmens in low level areas is usually after one of two things. Either the General Executioner achievement or trying to get the Anchor Devastator achievement by closing 250 dolmens.

Been doing a lot of low level dolmens for the general executioner achievement myself (still need one - it just refuses to spawn...). When a dolmen starts up I usually wait a minute or so to see if anyone shows up. If a group does show up, I just wait by the side, and maybe fire off the occasional heal if I see someone in trouble. But otherwise I just stay out of it until the boss spawns. If it's the general I am missing, then I will proceed to nuke it. If not, I just get a blow or two in so that I will still get the xp tick when the dolmen is closed, so as to have the thing not be a complete waste of time.

If no-one shows up, then I just one shot all the mobs as fast as possible in order to see if the general I am missing spawns or not. If someone does show up while i am swatting the low level mobs, I switch to just doing light attacks and let the lower level players get the killing blow.

But not all players take such matters into considerations, and there are always the few players who just like to act like ***. So while some of them might be there just to annoy you, most have an actual reason to be there. For example I also close dolmens that activate near me when I am fishing because they are noisy buggers. So If one start acting up and no-one shows up to close it... after a minute or two I will proceed to quiet it down. Bloody unruly cultists, distracting me from my fishing with human sacrifice... Yeah not gonna let that *** fly.

It's because of a poor design choice really ...

Bloody boss spawn mechanics for General Executioner achievement:
    • 4 specific bosses spawn randomly at each map, starting from the capital city maps and up untill the last - in ones own faction.
    • All bosses spawn randomly in dolmens located in Cadwells Silver, Cadwells Gold and in Cyrodiil.
...so it is a huge waste of time to farm the achievement in veteran locations, and much better to farm them in ones own faction. You cut the boss spawns to 4 specific bosses that randomly spawn at each map, instead of 16 that randomly spawn.

I've even had low level players ask me to help them with a nearby group dungeon as a healer. If I have spare time (because I get no real XP for it), I'll help keep everyone alive and always have a ton of each soul gem if anyone needs a rez. Not all high level players ruin it, just the "look at me!" ones. Some of us try to be helpful, because most of us can remember being helped when we were low level by someone.

    Waaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

Seriously? If I'm in a low level zone and I see you in trouble usually I go out of my way to help someone by burning down whatever mob they are fighting. Then, once I'm sure the lowbie is safe, I ride off. If that's bad form than so be it.

If I am on a a VR16 and I come across a dolmen in the leveling zones, I take it on. If there are other players there or they show up during it, I just kill one or two trash mobs, and get a hit or two in on the Bosses/Generals and let them have the rest. I have FG at 10, I don't need to kill any more Daedra, but I need my Dolmen Count and some Generals and I am going to get them. But not at the expense of other players experience.

Kinda funny that you mention it, OP... Just a few days ago, I was in Deshaan with my main doing a dolmen and some delves and quests with a friend which has a low-level character (I completed this all a long time ago, I just wanted to help her). All I did was healing her to not take away any XP she or any other player would gain. Only one time I messed it up completely by accidentally pressing the wrong button and one-hit killed a centurion boss in a delve lol But there was no other player around except for my friend, and we just waited for the boss to respawn ;)

It does feel kinda awkward, though, to actually BE that VR16 in a low-level zone; I had a similar situation some time last year, and another (random) player asked me if I'm here to show off with my VR14 (back then the highest rank). No, I was NOT in that zone to show off. From time to time, it's just really refreshing to go back to my home zones, even though I don't actually have something to do there anymore. I do miss them a lot...

The VR16s or other Veterans you see at a low-level dolmen actually fighting are doing this for a reason, though, I'm sure. Who would go back to kill stuff without gaining anything from it.. I strongly assume it's because of the achievements. BUT it still would be enough for them to let the zone-levelled players fight alone and ONLY in the end hit one of the boss adds or something to get the achievement; it's not necessary to fight during the entire event.
