Years ago when I needed to come up with a new used ID I reached back into my memory of some old Star Wars books. A character named Talon Karrde's ship was called the "Wild Karrde".

Just shortened it down a bit and been WldKarde ever since.

As for the "true" meaning??? Well for anyone who has played with me on ESO, I think most would say that "Knucklehead" would have been a better choice. ;)
I preferred the name of one of his other ships... It was the Uwana Buyer :)

It's a Magic: The Gathering reference. Which, in light of that, probably says a lot about my state of mind seventeen years ago. Now, not so much. But, the name stuck.

Hm, the article is an interesting start.

I wonder if they could do a survey of what people base their usernames off of? Think the results of that would be more telling than just comparing those two data bases.

I had to think of a gamertag for counterstrike when I was in school. I lack imagination so just considered what I liked and came up with FriedEggSandwich. Changed it to kingskin in my early 20's cos I thought it was cool to make weed references. Changed it back to FriedEggSandwich a few years ago to get back to my roots lol.

My User_ID is a tribute to Morrowind and has been my internet identity for over a decade now. My character names are almost completely made up from my own imagination, with tributes here and there to various books, games etc that I enjoyed aspects of. In the case of ESO I tried to be lore appropriate with all of my characters and I think I succeeded for the most part. I have somewhere close to 2 dozen different names that I have used over the years and I recycle them when a new game comes out that seems appropriate for that particular character and their general persona.

Basically my names don't mean anything to anyone except myself in most cases. :expressionless:

I started off gaming on hardcore RP UO shards, and picking a normal (ish) name just seemed natural. Krist is simply because I was trying to name this character...WAAAAAAY back in the early 90s, liked Chris for him but wanted something different. Obviously Christ would not work so Krist *Kris with a t sound at end*.

I came to be known as Krist among my gaming friends. It was uncommon enough that few people have the name...think I saw one other in all my years. Not sure what that would tell anyone about me, but as Hughe *my mage* would tell you, forget everything I just told you about me, because tomorrow none of it may be true.

I come across a lot of people that insist on making the most ridiculous names like hAxorl33t or megakilla or whatever, and then usually put in some random numbers at the end as well. What's the point? I've never gone down that road in all my gaming. Really my "worst" username I've used was 'simplecarefree' back in Battlefield2142 and Counter Strike. Other than that I started my Xbox gaming career as 'Goofymike' and then evolved to what I am now, 'ArchMikem', which is a combo of Archaic and my name Michael. Yes, I feel old. And I'm only 24.

    Interesting article.

However, I wonder if perhaps it has a bias towards a specific game type (MOBA style games) rather than gaming as a whole, since they specifically teamed up with RIOT Games to do their research.

It wouldn't surprise me if their findings could apply to other genres, or even other social interaction nodes in general (provided they aren't environments that encourage or force the user to use their real name).

Truth be told, my only takeaway from the article as a whole is how it highlights the sorry state of humanity...
