Interesting, although perhaps slightly obvious.

I can't say I'm surprised at the research when being tea-bagged by 'xxNoobKillah04xx'...

    Well, as expected -
Generally speaking, younger people tend to have weaker impulse control, poorer social skills and take offence more easily. We found that players who were young or who had antisocial user names would tend to receive and send more negative feedback. Meanwhile, older, more mature players, or those with inoffensive user names, would have relatively positive interactions with their teammates.

I suppose part of the wonder of MMOs is how it can simultaneously appeal to the most social and the most anti-social individuals.

Interesting article. Although I already knew that some people are antisocial and wear the label proudly. Which kind of defeats the purpose of being antisocial, by bringing attention to yourself.

    I'm scared of bees.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I was a bit disappointed that they didn't go into more depth or look at more of a range of names. "People who choose antisocial screen names exhibit more antisocial behaviour" is hardly a revelation. It's a good start and I can appreciate the value in an experiment to confirm what "everyone knows" (because so often everyone knows the world is flat), but I'd like to have seen them go further.

I really want to know how this Gamer Tag would fit into their mix.

A couple years back I was playing SWAT in Halo Reach and got killed by a guy whose GT was "A Dirty Jew", so the in-game text told me that: "You were headshot by 'A Dirty Jew' ".

It was hilarious. But still brings the curiosity of what these guys would say to that. lmao

I'm inclined on using names in-game that reflects the character I'm playing, but then again, I'm quit aware of my madness and the different voices in my head say that it doesn't matter and that they like me the way I am.

My forum name however is a different story; It's my last name. Yeah, I created this forum avatar during a period of newly released forum, and for some strange reason, Zenimax decided to skip the the choosing of a nick and rather just congratulated me on creating a forum user. And since I couldn't be bothered to change it, it stuck

Depends on the personality I suppose. I've always made very deliberate name choices. For example, ContraTempo is a sword fighting term that involves attacking at an unexpected time to gain the advantage (oversimplification but that's the important part). And yes, I do actual swordfighting as a hobby, and I like to approach situations in unexpected ways. Not very mysterious.

Being new to MMOs, one of the hardest parts for me was learning to use typical, expected techniques when working with others. I'm a quick study but most PUGS have little patience for someone who does not already know the typical group tactics. This forum was very helpful in figuring those out, as was some advice from a few patient individuals.

My character names are all taken from ES lore so there is not much to be learned about me there.

Ha! I had actually wondered if that was where your name came from! I don't do any swordfighting myself, but when I used to fence a bit when I was a kid, and one of my friends is a swordfighting instructor so that was what came to mind the first time I saw your name.

My gaming name is actually my repurposed hacker handle from when I was twelve and leaning how to code, and that was originally taken from a character in a set of short stories I wrote shortly before then.

I have no idea how that relates to the fact that I was never the t-bagging / trash-talking type, but oh well.

Back when I played WoW, I knew a couple of guildmates IRL who were very altruistic and religious. In fact, they even used their religious affiliation in their game names both of WoW and on their Xbox Live accounts. Yet in game, they were some of the most foul-mouthed and belligerent players I've ever played with. Tea-bagging and sending hate mail was pretty much par for the course for these guys. I couldn't help but both laugh and cringe at their antics.

Moral of the story is; just because someone has a "nice" or "normal" gamename doesn't mean they're not hiding something.

Years ago when I needed to come up with a new used ID I reached back into my memory of some old Star Wars books. A character named Talon Karrde's ship was called the "Wild Karrde".

Just shortened it down a bit and been WldKarde ever since.

As for the "true" meaning??? Well for anyone who has played with me on ESO, I think most would say that "Knucklehead" would have been a better choice. ;)

    Hmmm...

"In their user names, players also often include two or four digit numbers – which are commonly thought to refer to their year of birth. We checked this assumption (by comparing these dates to the ones provided in the registration information) and found that the two were highly, although not perfectly, correlated."

Which unfortunately means nothing because I bet most people lie about their true DoB.

I have one character in game who is named Occam Razzor from the principle by the same name

    https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_razor

In a nutshell, if there are two possible explanations for something the simpler one is usually right.

He has an adopted sister, Sarein Razzor. She is adopted as Occam is a Breton, and Sarein is an Altmer.

He has a real sister, but for some stupid reason, her name is Occam Craftalt. I need to get that changed.

I also have Kees vaan Loo-Macklin based on a character from a Alan Dean Foster book, The Man Who Used the Universe. In the story, he goes from the top of the criminal underworld to the top of legitimate society and pulled the biggest con ever to stop a war.

    https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Man_Who_Used_the_Universe.html?id=12BVVtqrSq8C

He has a cousin named Kees Loo-Macklin who has not earned the right to use the vaan prefix yet.

I have a crafting mule named Crafter Collector

I have another character named Lars Leefmulcher, just for grins. He holds my gear sets for me while he hangs out in a tavern. He is a Nord after all.

I have two other mules, but there names are not important. So, if anyone can suss out something about me from these character names, I would like to hear it.
