What is Fun for You in Elder Scrolls Online?

Recent news about another MMO being cancelled because it was not fun (the developer said this) got me to thinking about this game and what is fun about it. I am sure there are many reasons, maybe as many as there are players. But, I also think we probably tend to like the same things about this game.

For me, it is playing in a world that other people are in. Makes the game feel more alive. Also, the questing, stories and exploration. I also like developing my character to succeed in the ever changing landscape that is called Balance. I like trying out new things in combat, even sometimes using weak skills and weapons to make it a challenge. I like how my different classes approach combat.

So, I ask, what is fun about this game for you?
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I think it's the general feeling of freedom I get when I'm playing. Last night, my buddies and I went to Glenumbra and passed out motifs and goofing around just because we can.

These old dungeons, like vaults of madness, crypt of hearts, tempest island, city of ash. While there are lots of new things coming each patch, I can't bring myself to like them (cheers veteran maelstrom), but old dungeons still atmospheric and really interesting. I hope ZOS will bring us more great 4-mans.
Btw vICP and vWGT are also great.

I like to craft, gather materials and read lore books. I also love questing and exploring, and always stop to admire the surrounding world, because it really is very beautiful.
I can take or leave people being around ( I mostly prefer them not to be ) because it seems very rare to me to end up being around other folks that aren't doing things like crowding in a group, or leaping all over the place, spamming abilities every 2 or 3 seconds simply to annoy others.
I don't often encounter this kind of behaviour on EU server ,which is where I've started playing most of the time now.
I play ESO to relax, so I like the quiet time of just collecting stuff, and questing or fighting creatures at my own pace.

I don't do dungeons or pledges or anything like that because I've not done them before, and I know how other people despise PUGS so I just do things on my own and skip that stuff.

The whole solo/co-operative play PvE game to be honest. It looks great, plays flawlessly for me, and the whole exploration and questing experience is the best there is around at the moment. I knew at launch it was going to be my main MMO home for years to come and it has only got better since then. It helps obviously that I'm not a PvPer or min-maxer so that 99.9% of the complaints about the game go straight over my head. It also helps that I've deliberately taken the game slowly and mixed playing it with several other games so that there's no danger of ever getting burnt out or running out of content.

I love developing and customizing my characters. Some have more personality than others, but each has their role, sometimes a back story to shape questing decisions, and sometimes a handicap just to make things interesting.

I also love exploring. My main in Cyrodiol has grabbed all the sky shards, done each of the 50 dailies at least once, and cleared every boss in each cave. So to my surprise, when I started sky shard hunting on an alt in a different faction, I found new locations I hadn't discovered even in my main's home territory. And it's always fun picking up a new treasure map and thinking, yeah I know exactly where this is.

I also like the action of PvP, good fun I'd say 90% of the time.

And most recently, this veteran of TES single player games has discovered the joy of playing in active guild events.

A lot of stuff actually :)
First of all, I'm a huge fan of Elder Scrolls universe, its my favourite fantasy setting. And I really love exploration, especially in new dlcs (imo level design/quest quality improved a lot compared to vanilla game).
Also I like buildig characters and being competitive - and even though ESO is mostly casual game, there's a lot of fun in theorycrafting a learning how to play my characters in the most effective way. :)
Small scale pvp is also fun for me, but its hard for me to play it due to latency issues. :(

I like the ability to have massive zergs (or small ganking squads lol) in PVP, ragequit, then go pick flowers in Vulkhel Guard. Then join my guild members and conquer massive Demons and beasts in the dungeons and World Bosses.

Nervous exploration, chance discovery, captivating scenery, random encounters, RP interaction and... crafting. This is a pretty fun game for those who want their characters to 'live a life' in Tamriel and prefer to take things at a more gentle pace. Slow and steady questing, walking rather than running, or just hanging out and observing the world around me whilst my char sips on a mug of nut brown ale... well, you get the point.

Rerolling a new character only to find the RNG is still terrible no matter which alliance I play, losing out on armour/weapon traits and styles I should be able to find but never will. Sudden power surge in certain classes then losing it due to nerfs, ninja nerfs and terrible patches.

Joking aside (or was I?) I like the freedom, crafting, choosing the fate of certain NPC's.

I have to add to my original statement way above in the list of comments. I don't play on PC, I play on Xbox One, but I have to say the nude glitch/bug that has been going around I thought was really funny, especially since the thread on it attracted so much attention. The other thing is kind of a quest spoiler, so don't read past this point.
The Dark Elf that you leave in that settlement located in a tomb during an Ebonheart Pact quest in which you're investigating cannibals. If you leave her there during a certain point where you can tell her to leave or stay she gets taken away and you end up with a meat-bag later that has her remains as a reward on that quest.
I have to say I was very freaked out by the end of that quest, but I loved it at the same time because the game never really made me want to start over so much like that quest made me want to.

I love exploring zones, especially moreso with friends. To take a stroll back through Stonefalls, Rivenspire, Auridon or any of the old zones I haven't quested in for over a year is always a joy. Remember the towns, the quests and general envoriment.

Doing so in your high level armor (And looking badass while at it!) really does reveal how far one has come within this wonderful world of Tamriel.

I'm not really sure if we can believe the dev at Daybreak on this, EQ Next lost a lot of their primary developers early and then when SOE became Daybreak, I'm more likely to believe that the company as a whole isn't doing well than I am to believe a game like EQ "wasn't fun". Look at what they've done to DCUO, it wouldn't surprise me if that game became the next on hit list.

Its cancelled but its still very important to them, what I read, so its most likely still to come. Using word Cancellation they got alot more drama and PR-stuff, instead of the truth that its delayed. It actually sounds like smart move, if I was Daybreak Company I'd start with a bang, instead of doing some half-baked F2P game.

EQN can still turn to be good, it was obvious EQN was some half-baked F2Pgame ala SOE with some very smart marketting gimmicks, if they put more money into it, good for them.

Btw, if you really cancelled it, give us Planetside but Fantasy versio with Dragons, Mounted, Combat, Siege Weapons and maybe even Sea-combat you've a gem in your hand.

    Exploring for me too.

I love having big, detailed maps to wander around and lots of stuff to find. I don't actually mind what it is I'm finding, whether it's quests, items, locked chests, NPCs with amusing dialogue, cool scenery, whatever. Just something to make it feel like that space has some purpose to it.

Which IMO ESO is pretty good at. I've played other games with big open maps but apart from a few (usually clearly marked) points which related to quests there's nothing there. You go all the way out to a little mountain plateau or an isolated beach or wherever and it's just empty ground, as was everything between it and the nearest town. That to me is bad map design.
