The first 50 CP into hardy gives 15%
The last 50 CP gives you 10%

Yes there are diminishing returns, but not so much that you wouldnt still cap out the best stars.

You have to consider substitutes.
As an example: For a a magicka DK dps, you have elemental expert, elfborn, and spell erosion. Because 1% increase to damage of critical hits or 1% to spell penetration is inherently inferior to 1% more damage, you have to split your points between the three so that your amount in elfborn and spell erosion(both increasing your damage by a lesser amount) so that the amount of damage added by these two would be better than what you could have gotten with the diminished amount in elemental expert.

Players do get less and less benefit with each point, which is why players spread points out between stars. That, however, does not mean that you should not put 100 points into, say, mighty, thaumaturge, elemental defender, blocking cost, reduced stamina/magicka cost, recovery, or elemental expert for example.

Every couple points the percentage increase lowers, starting from the second point into a star.
