Some of the items that I can steal, appear to be new, I haven't seen them before the latest update. Some of them could be neat decorative items for your house. I kept my Dibella statue. Hope it will be a decorative element for housing. If not I hope this gives ZOS the idea to make some items decorative elements for the housing release.

While I love player housing, this game just doesn't need another element that detracts from social interaction, which is often the case due to the way MMOs tend to implement these things.

That said, I won't poop on this, and I personally look forward to it as well.

what purpose will houses serve anyway? In Skyrim you could store all of your stuff in your house, but we have banks and bags for that in ESOTU. So what good will houses do us? Why would they even think about adding housing while there are so many bugs, glitches and exploits in the game now? Why don't they spend some time working on the broken skills, class balancing, or the horribly thought out Champion Point system?

Where are they located? I heard some people mention locked houses, but I doubted they were anything to do with the housing update. Genuinely curious about where they might be.

Hope there is different varieties of houses by the zones/areas you get them in, like argonian mud huts, bosmer tree houses etc.

Yes, big thanks to Zenimax for spending their time and resources on steering away what made their game truly unique; the combat system. And adding something mundane and ordinary such as decorating a house that can be done in the real world every day. Good job. /sarcrasm
Housing and social can go a long way to keeping a game interesting, helping build friendships and giving players more to do when they get tired of finally questing or grinding. This is a large part of a reason Ultima Online had a lot of staying power. The combat was fairly decent, but the social and community aspects of the game were amazing.

Yep and if done right like Wildstar or EQ2, this noncombat aspect can keep one entertained for a very long time. I spoke with players who worked for months on their plots in the sky. I would hope it isn't just a hook system ala LoTRO (although I did love my neighborhood and the general feel of the place). With a truly creative housing system that lets players use their imaginations, I could see this being a very fun thing. Also a great cash shop opportunity for Zenimax. Housing should be both fun to play around with and functional. Fingers crossed.

I always thought housing was a very good idea in most MMO's people can spend months decorating their house, adding special rewards for quests suddenly becomes very easy as it can just be decorations. They don't need to throw more powerful items and gear and people can be happy they are getting something. And it keeps people playing (and paying).

Now I just hope housing is more than just a shack to dump crap and that we don't have to complete vet dungeons just to get a stool to sit on.

Weird. I really can't see player housing as something that's a really big pull or material addition into the game. At best, it ends up being a mini-game and entertains people for a while... At worst, many people won't care.

    Specifically:

    - I can't see anyone sticking with the game because of it
    - I can't see anyone being on the fence and finally hopping in because of it
    - I can't see people remaining engaged with it

... unless, they add some really cool rewards/mechanics not found in other games. For example, Wildstar, for all its failings, had a tremendous player housing system. Yeah, it was a party for a while, but it ultimately didn't help the game much, IMO.

Yet I'm guessing it was a HUGE development effort - effort that'd be better spent on PvP and PvE encounters, mechanics, etc.

Feels like one of the "build it and they'll come" features that end up not really driving any real consumer demand.
