Patch Error??

MolliMayhem
Ok..so very excited that game is bac kup....but...can't play because Error 209 ...version fail???
Did the "repair"..no luck. WTF?

Any advice other than calling customer support "if the error persists after an hour"?

This happens after every patch... Hopefully one day ZOS will hire some competent programmers to create a new launcher that handles being patched. Most other MMOs manage it. I'm sure ESO will too in 5-10 years' time.
  • MolliMayhem
Well, thanks for the answer. Does it fix itself eventually? Just trying to decide if I should go play something else or not.

The launcher/patcher is built using the SDK SOLID for Games made by Solid State Networks, Inc.. They also host the client/patch files on their virtual CDN, i.e. they buy disk space and bandwidth capacity with the big providers (e.g. Akamai, Amazon Web Services) and resell it bundled with the launcher/patcher SDK to their business customers. The SDK has the benefit that it works on both OS X and Windows, so development cost is way lower than to build and test something from scratch for each supported platform.
Any advice other than calling customer support "if the error persists after an hour"?

Error 209 is caused by a timeout. The launcher periodically checks back with the source on the CDN whether the local files are up to date. If there is heavy traffic to the central CDN repositories, e.g. right after a patch hit the live servers and thousands of launchers all over the world are updating their local client repositories simultaneously, the response is likely to be delayed, and thus error 209 is reported by your launcher. Repeatedly.

If your client is already fully updated to the latest version and you're able to log in and play, the best way to deal with this particular error message is to ignore it. Or, you can just close the launcher after the client is launched, and thus free up a little bit of bandwidth for others.

What I do is run the launcher as admin. and it seems to patch fine after that.

I always run the launcher as admin (won't run properly at all otherwise) and stll get error 209 after almost every patch.

This occasionally after Patches. Just close and reopen the launcher until it disappears and/or the "PLAY" button appears.

Or you could just launch from the eso.exe file in your client folder if you are already patched. No need to open the launcher at all if you are already patched.
  • MolliMayhem
Ok....thanks for all the replies...I will give the exe file a try and see if that works. :)

Closing patcher and rebooting usually fixes it.

Hahah,,,so there doesn't appear to be an eso.exe file in my client folder at all. O.O

Now what?( and how the heck did it work in the first place?)

Found an exe file for the launcher is all.

And why is there no edit button for these posts? or am I just not seeing it?

    Not seeing it...d'oh...edited.

OK...so....the Play button comes up without the error...but doesn't do anything.
Guess I'll go away until tomorrow and hope for the best then. Sucks though.

I have found this happens to me when I have a launcher running in the background (like in the systray) and launch another one.

I had the same error, and after restarting the Launcher, I made the mistake of clicking REPAIR. That was 3 hours ago, and the download is about a third through. Maybe I'll be able to play around the time I usually log off for the night. Guess I'll craft armor for my 2nd alt ever that hit v16 last night tomorrow instead of today.......I hope. :'(

The eso.exe file is usually in C:\Zenimax Online\The Elder Scrolls Online\game\client if you installed with default settings. You don't want the one in the launcher folder.

Hey there @MolliMayhem, I've seen this problem after patching. Closing the launcher completely fixes it for me after I reopen it. The old launcher is still running in system memory and it doesn't cleanly exit after an update for some reason. You could try signing out of your windows session too as that will clear up anything that launched into memory while you were logged in.

P.S. Did you come here from Firefall? Name looks familiar. Welcome to ESO :)

HI!! Yes, I am a Firefall refugee. I just went and played there since I couldn't get on here...ran around DT for a bit. Dreading the coming "update". :( Who are/were you over there?

Anyway...I have tried the repair button, twice, closing the launcher, looking for the exe file (which wasn't where it is rumored to be)..everything except restarting the computer. At one point, the launcher came up with the play button lit and no error...but nothing happened.

My husband and I are wondering if we are going to have to re-download the entire game or something. I sure hope not..it took all night.

aaaand it looks like that's what my husband is doing.

I've been waiting on that Firefall update as well, a bit nervous about the new proposed changes myself, lol. Hopefully they get that to PTS soon. I play as Hypermancer over there but I've been taking a break from it like a lot of others.

Hopefully you don't have to reinstall ESO, what a cupcake that would be ;)

Well, looks like we are in fact re-installing. A search of files on our computers did not find any eso.exe file ...all it found was "Install_ESO".

Go figure. I wonder if it got lost in the patch or if the "repair" function deleted it? No idea here. So ..another huge long wait to play. Cupcake for sure!! :disappointed:

Earlier today, I updated to the latest patch and all went well and I started playing but then about 6hrs ago the game suddenly crashed (like it lost internet connection). Trying to get back into the game now resulted in this 209 error ever since. I've done all the "fix" suggestions from the support post about this error as well as repaired a dozen times. I have an 2nd copy of the game set up for the EU server and it still works perfectly fine. As a last ditch effort I thought I'd copy my EU files over the top of the NA files (since they were both the same version prior to this latest patch) and follow up with a new update/repair to get everything back up. Sounded like a good idea at the time coz I did not and will not go through the agony of re-downloading 33+ gigs of files that are essentially the exact same as already exist on my HDD. Anyway - this did NOT cure the problem and I continue to get these 209 errors even after doing multiple repairs since the copy-over.

The error says it cannot determine the current version and I cannot understand what it's looking at to determine this information since the EU server starts up fine but not the NA one.

I've exhausted every idea I could come up with short of the dreaded re-install/re-download from scratch. Surely there must be an easy fix for this.

Running the eso.exe file directly results in the crash report popup window but only for the NA server, not the EU server - which is weird because it even crashes like that when the files were exactly the same and before the repair.

I hope someone has some fresh ideas as to how to get around this, coz i'm completely stumped.

I feel so bad for all of you who have repaired and even reinstalled.

The ESO.exe is located in your C/ or whatever hardrive you put it in.

For me the path is D/The Elder Scrolls Online/Game/Client/ESO.exe

The ONLY time I use the launcher is when it has an update. On just normal game days I launch from the .exe

I had the same error today after the patch. I ignored it, closed the launcher like always, and launched the game from my .exe link on my quick bar. I had no problem playing tonight.

I hope this helps others. The launcher has never been a reliable way to start the game....

Only time I ever open launcher is for an update. Going on 8 times now opening it and getting error 209. Ran as admin, opened multiple times, tried to bypass and use .exe in case patch actually went through, no luck. Even tried repairing, same thing.

Edit- no eso files are running in the background to keep it from updating

Is my only remaining option to reinstall?

@Valen_byte We both looked for the exe file....there wasn't one in the client folder. My husband is the geek in the family and has built our computers and understands quite a bit about software, etc...and he could not find one either. Believe me, if we get the game up this time, we will be SURE to have a way to bypass the stupid launcher if that is the problem...!

So he did a new installation last night, and I THOUGHT I was but apparently wasn't..so now I am waiting all freaking day for mine to go through and cannot play anything at all since my computer will be tied up all freaking day. Very NOT HAPPY new customers here!!

I am both sad and happy to hear we are not the only ones with problems after this patch. It frankly makes me scared of patches. Apparently on "maintenance day" you better just plan on losing a day or more of play. :#

I posted in PC technical as well for what that may be worth.
