Help me understand...?

I'm on my new toon on a whole new server. I get to one of the first dolmens and starting fighting alongside another low level. Then, a VR3 in skeleton polymorph turns up and just walks around standing in front of enemies, pulling them, but not helping. You might think he was letting us earn our XP or whatever, but no. He lets us both die. I can revive myself but the other guy can't and I have no soul gems. The VR3 turns himself into a were wolf (I don't know why - showing off?) and I refuse to activate the last anchor without the lowbie. After a good while the polymorph gets his soul gem out...but he's left him there too long and the lowbie disappears.

This hasn't been a good impression for the NA server, please tell me that's not common.

Sounds like he was trying to help. Apparently he had no way of healing you guys. He prolly expected you guys to come out with your own soul gems, or you know, not die.

I think you interpreted your experience incorrectly.

He/she might be trying to draw all/most of the fire so you two can stand off and attack risk free.
ie..tanking.

They might be worried you wont get enough XP to credit and doesn't want to stop you getting achievements and such.
I myself will try to let lowbies do as much damage as possible...but will shield stun if I see a lowbie taking too many hits.
There is an achievement for bosses and they only appear in certain zones.
Some lowbies want to try and win and don't want help.

Maybe I'm too annoyed to see how he was supposedly helping, but he kept sitting chairs to watch etc. We were only level 8.

I'm always willing to help out lowbies when I happen to be in low level area, but I also don't want to help too much that I end up stealing their xp.

There was a hate thread a while back about Vet players taking all the fun away from low level zones by visiting low level dolmens to get the achievement.
The Vets agreed to hang back where possible.

So what does a Vet do ?
Run in and 1-shot and leave you with nothing or wait for you to finish the dolmen so that he can solo it next spawn.
Knowing the bosses don't spawn everytime.

But granted....I would try to help you not die...rather than take kills.
Even a shield charge can kill stuff though and gap closer is required to flit from one lowbie to another to get them out of trouble.

I highly doubt his motives were actually antagonistic. He may have been trying to help, but trying not to interfere too much. I'm sure that the reason he didn't immediately res the other guy was that he didn't want to waste a Grand soul gem on a level 8 person (who should have his own soul gems on him before heading to a dolmen). The fact that he eventually tried to anyway proves that he was trying to help, even if it was too late.

Regardless of what he was doing, if you died while he was pulling and tanking some of the enemies, then you obviously would have still died even if he wasn't there at all. He may not have been helping very much, but he didn't do anything to make it harder on you, so your failure is your own.

I was at an Auridon dolmen the other day with my lvl 12 alt. There were a couple of other players at my level also standing around ready to start. In comes a v16 and surprise attacks every mob so that none of us get a hit on anything. Who even does that? Some people are just jerks I guess. I know there are dolmen boss achievements but that doesn't excuse this type of behaviour.

Some people help, some people ignore, some observe and some thankfully rare people enjoy messing with others. Don't let any of them distract you, don't expect anything, just focus on the fight at hand.

Dolmen are generally moderately tough fights, though at some point you may end up soloing them at level (the trick I found is to run around the dolmen to keep it between you and the main enemy while dealing with the adds, then once those are gone and done, focus on the main event. Some are tougher then others, expect some respawns and bring some soul gems... but there is always coming back later with a few more levels as you likely well know...

First, you cannot define NA server by a few bad experiences. Second, It could've been an Aussie, a Brit, a German, an American, a Brazilian, ect. Who knows!

Let's not get into pissing match about which server is worse, or which country.

Well, if you help newbies while trying to farm certain dolmen bosses, you get blamed for stealing exp and ruining immersion.
If you dont, you're also bad for not helping.
What should a high ranked player do if he/she wants an achievement?

Unless he is a healer that runs around with a resto staff, he better not "help" if you want any xp and achievement. In case you don't care about xp and achievements, the other level 8 player might do.

The v3 might have been friend of the other low level, and the low level might have crashed and disconnected, and that could explain why he didn't let himself get ressurrected by the v3.

The v3 might stand and wait for his low level friend to arrive there, so he might not want the fight to go too fast.

Dolmens are made for many players to gather and do together, don't wait for a v3 to carry you and another level 8 through a dolmen - notify your friends and guildmates and try to group up for it instead, ask later if the group is interested in clearing the map of dolmens and world bosses - this way everyone gets experience and achievements - at the same time being social, creating bonds and getting to know eachother better.

Healing also "steals" exp afaik.

I usually help by popping my healing Ward when a low level guy is about to die. That way he can deal all the damage he wants and survive through it. Would that bother you? I would hate for the new player to be mad at me for making he fight "too easy" for him lol

Maybe he was helping then. Maybe he wasn't. I was venting. I wasn't expecting him to help. He made things worse is all. He pulled enemies towards us and watched us die. I didn't think that was helpful. It annoyed me. I vented.

When I was hunting my Deadric Lord Slayer title I used to find un-started Dolmens, then, as soon as I kicked it off, a load of players would appear from nowhere, in this instance I would still take it down asap, I would leave the Anchor Chains to the newly arrived but would burn down everything else.
If there was an already started Dolmen I would mostly observe/heal or step in if a fight became too much for the lower levels.
I would not ever step into a started Dolmen and take over the fight, these are still fun fights but at lower level can be challenging..
I think that in this instance you were just unlucky to either run into a troll or perhaps the intentions were interpreted wrong, I wouldn't worry about it too much, the Dolmens re-spawn every 10 minutes..

Well, if you were underleveled for that dolmen, its not his fault that enemies killed you.
And if he wasnt there, enemies woud run to you regardless... He couldnt possibly make the things "worse" for you.

Don't look too harshly upon him, Its one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't. Some people like to receive help, some people don't want others to interfere.

The worst are those that complain about what form the help arrives in. Its okay to heal them with HOTs that fill half their health bar each second, but heaven forbid you help them by assisting in killing the world boss.

I have other VR16 toons and have played since launch. I just get annoyed when things like this happen, even if his intentions were pure

It seems to be the case.
Probably he hit the mobs a few times just to get credit for doing it. And all dolmen enemies aggro instantly so its not like pulling everything in dungeons. As soon as they spawn, they run to the player.

Well, there are more constructive things you could do.
When you saw that enemies are too strong you could just run away to reset the anchor and wait for more people. Or ask that vr guy to help.

It was probably a werewolf trying to up his WW skill line and skills by completing dolmens while in WW form. The "pulls" you saw were light attacks meant to fill up his ulti while not yet killing the mobs (waiting for WW form for that). Could it "fit" ?

Well, there are more constructive things you could do.
When you saw that enemies are too strong you could just run away to reset the anchor and wait for more people. Or ask that vr guy to help.
