it's not a Group dungeon, it's a Public dungeon.
There are 3 tiers.
solo Delves, the regular ones in the landscape that usually have a skyshard and sometimes a little quest.
Public dungeons, one per zone that contain a skyshard, several bosses and a Group Challenge worth a skill point.
They also have achievements associated with the bosses. They were originally intended as informal group content but these days can be soloed easily as well.
Group dungeons, the ones you do in groups of 4 such as Elden Hollow, Direfrost Keep, Wayrest Sewers, etc.

You were in a Public Dungeon, which is pretty much a group dungeon scale and difficulty. They are really designed to be taken on by a group of players, but they don't have to be grouped to do so. Some public dungeons can be done on level solo, some are most difficult to do so.
As for the Group Event, there is one Boss in each Public Dungeon that is of this category. They give a Skill Point, some Undaunted Credit (which usually comes from Group Dungeons) and some Achievement Points. They are characterized by waves of mobs before the boss comes out.
I find them to be a great place to farm for Loot to decon and Gold.

Group challenge is always public dungeon.
Since my main did them when I had zero idea about this game they seemed difficult..
The baby sorc I am levelling breezes through them solo and melts everything in the few I've done so far.
